Re: True American/Anything
For me the term American means anyone from the continents of North or South America, but I mainly use it, and see it used, to refer to citizens of the U.S.A.
A true American is any annoyingly obnoxious Yank who thinks that the world wants/needs U.S.A.'s help, wishes he/she was English and had a 'British accent,' calls football 'soccer,' speaks with an unnecessarily loud voice in public, speaks with a condescending tone when talking to anyone from a 'third-world' country, thinks muscle cars are in any way good, thinks the right to bear arms is in any way good, thinks everyone wants to be American, has little knowledge of countries other than U.S.A. and Canada, can't name any countries that fought in WWII other than U.S.A., England, Germany, and France, stupidly and idiotically opposes free healthcare, thinks the 'founding fathers' were morally upstanding men, thinks us Australians say "shrimp on the barbie," doesn't know what an American accent is, thinks people other than Americans give a crap what state they're from and what states that state is better than, doesn't fully understand/research government systems other than "GOOD OL' DEMOCRACY," before forming an opinion about them, likes Hershey's chocolate, destroys coffee with sugar/cream/syrup, still believes that U.S.A. is an economic example/leader, thinks playing Total War: Shogun 2 makes them an expert on Japanese culture/history, thinks cricket is stupid but watches baseball, and forces his/her beliefs upon those who would disagree.
God bless America.

Re: True American/Anything
Nah, I just have a lot of American friends. They're all great, just...ignorant.
Obviously (I hope it was obvious) everything I listed is a massive generalization, and I hope no Americans were harmed in the making of this rant. Perhaps only a few of the listed atrocities may be applicable to you Yanks reading this, or maybe all of them. If all of them apply, you're probably the most patriotic, red-blooded 'Murican alive. Congrats.
But Chaser's was a bloody good show. A bloody good show.

Re: True American/Anything
Honestly, I like to take the micky out of America... but it's all harmless banter. Sure I don't agree with the way your country works a lot of the time, but it's none of my business really as I don't live there. I do however get a bit annoyed at your meddling in foreign affairs(and have every right to), but that isn't the common mans fault... that's the governments.
A 'true american' is just someone born in the USA... I mean just like us Brits are called Brits for being born in Britain. It's not like we actually lived here since the beginning of mankind.
I'd just like to add a final thing, the whole '8/10 Europeans hate Americans' thing is a load of rubbish. It's just another one of those so called 'facts' the ignorant haters like to pull from their arse.

I'm mostly just sick of our government meddling in our business.
The Middle East needs some good meddling now and again, though.

Re: True American/Anything
There is so much work to be done domestically.
I ain't one to say to completely abandon foreign relations etc
But we are well due for better laws for small business, better infrastructure, and curb spending.
Our health and tax laws are pretty shifty too. Actually I can sit here all day listing what needs to be done here....it's sad really. All that voting...for nothing. All that voice going unheard. In fighting between Democrats and Republicans also needs to stop....it's all or nothing for each side. While they bicker amongst each other our economy is going down and poverty rises.

We're control freaks over here. Instead of trying to let the middle-east figure out themselves, no, we just take over to the point where they need us. We're looking for other people to depend on us. Control mongers.

Re: True American/Anything
The state rivalry thing is not stupid. It's not just here that happens.
Take a look at Italy, Spain, and some places in the UK. Rivalries between places is commonplace and they are usually centered on a event, a sports one.
Like I know in Italy there is a famous horse race that takes place between many neighborhoods. It's called the Palio di Siena. In Spain soccer rivalries between states is common too. For example here my home in Tucson we have an ongoing rivalry with Phoenix....and it culminates as a territorial rivalry cup between the University of Arizona (Tucson) and Arizona State University (Phoenix). It's the Wild Cats V the Sun Devils in a event known as "The Duel in the Desert"....heck we even have our own mountains named after the schools. In Tucson, Sentinel Peak, is known as "A" Mountain in Phoenix in mock of our mountain (Ours came first) named their mountain "A" mountain as well (Officially known as Tempe Butte). Every year during the cup season folks who support either team try to paint the other team's "A" to their school colors or just vandalize it. Our rivalry territorial cup and game is the oldest in the country. It can get bad too where folks from either side beat up each other or vandalize other team's cars equipment etc. In the end though for most of us it's all about tradition and the spirit of pride. I don't see nothing wrong with it. I mean I could do without the trashing and vandalism.

A southerner being called a yankee by a foreigner wouldn't draw much attention. A northerner calling him a yankee will get yanked into the nearest river. A westerner calling him a Yankee will be corrected. But in all seriousness we like to call each other on our stuff like we all don't have dirty laundry, that's the way I see it. You can get mad, get even, or get humorous.

Re: True American/Anything
Ohhh I love a thread llike this. Me gusta.
Anyway, America has its share of problems and anyone can see that. What bothers me is how little appreciation we recieve.
World War 2. Just mentioning it should be an argument ender. Without the US the Third Reich would own one half of the world and the Empire of the Rising Sun the other. And they would be fighting over it till this day.
Many other countries, like the UK, France, the USSR, the many Resistances, and others, fought bravely against the tyranny of fascism, but time was against them.
Many of the users here compare things that their country is famous for, famous people and ideas or just smack insults back and forth. Without the USA, the Nazis and the Imperials would have replaced the world's ancient and great legacies with their own evil and twisted view of things.
They say history is written by the victors, well if the Fascists would have won, there would be no books on reason, logic, religion, philosophy, great fictions or anything that could be used against their ideaologies. All there would ever be is the Party and the Leader.
All nations have a history. Some of it bad, much of it is good. The legacy of the Americans is just beginning. Let us hope that it for the best of all the peoples of the world.
As for a True American. A true American is one who will make the Ultimate Sacrifice to secure the liberty of the people, whether at home or in a foriegn land, against those who would oppress the whole world.

Note on WW2: The Soviets did most of the work.
What the US actually did, was keep the Soviets out of Western Europe and parts of Asia after the war ended.

@JackoBeans:
Okay, Europe appreciates the help from America during WW2 but I really can not stand the whole 'we saved you all' bull that some of you are taught(I hope it's not by your schools). Without all the European and other non European countries fighting, America would have been crushed to.
Don't you get it? Everyone played their part because they had to... the entire world was at risk. If both the commonwealth, and Europe were struggling then what makes you think America could do it all solo?
You don't get special treatment, every country that stood against the evil deserves the same respect for that period in time.
