C'mon man. I asked you to simply say what you thought made a European. Instead of calling you names and insulting you like I wanted to (and as you are quite keen to do), I tried to extend conversation in a civil manner, and you say things like:
I know that even in my small town there are things way older than your States even if my Constitution dates not so back in history, but the statues, cathedrals, castles and so on do and surpass the many achievements of America.
Yep, you're older. Here, have a birthday cake and a balloon if that will make you happy. So what? Doesn't make you better, and it certainly doesn't mean that your tiny town is better than the entire history of American Achievement.
So who created who I ask, who can claim the senior rank here?
Again, we've got cake and balloons. But fine, if you're still not happy I'll take you to the zoo tomorrow for your present.
I dare you to......
You dare us to outdo great works of art, etc? Let me know how it goes when your people outdo the wheel. I'll wait.
We are unique, you are a conglomerate of ideas and ideals that is not working well. If the world looses America is just looses more of the same and plain, if it looses Europe it looses a cradle of a culture and many things that cannot be replicated.
I'm not even sure how to respond to this, except it seems like you have some grand scheme to just wipe America off the map. Seems like a threat to me.
Now if I ask ten random people on the street, eight will say nothing good about America and even less of its people. Not my fault but such are the things. I dont write the rules on this world but alas so it happend that an American will face a horrible reputation world wide. Same can be said in several cases about the Italians but at last we have things to be proud of and who redeem us.
And if I ask 10 random people on this forum, 8 will say nothing good about you I bet. No not Italy in general, just you. And thank God(or maybe we should call him Arterion?) you don't write the rules, because that would be a terrifying world. I have plenty of things to be proud of among them, the fact that you are nowhere near me right now.

Americans built the Panama Canal. Americans invented the Internet. Americans wrote the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence which are every bit as eloquent and meaningful as a document like the Magna Carta. Edgar Allen Poe was an American. Hemingway was an American. Mark Twain was an American. Americans built the continental railroad. Americans settled in Tornado Alley. Americans created a vaccine for Polio. Americans directly intervened to end Fascist control of Italy. Americans directly intervened to help the British and the French, twice. Americans were integral to the formation of the United Nations. Americans put a man on the moon. Americans created a vaccine for Yellow Fever. Americans invented Jazz. Americans invented Rock. Maya Angelou was American. Harper Lee was American. F Scott Fitzgerald was American. John Steinbeck was an American. Tennessee Williams was American. Martin Luther King Jr, Cezar Chavez, and Dorothy Day were all Americans. More: Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, (Yes, he totally counts.) Stephen king, H.P. Lovecraft. Stanley Kubrick.

Really, I could go on all day. America is not a perfect country, but we are so much more than our mistakes, we are so much more than the jokes and the stereotypes, and the bigotry. We have a real history. We are young, and we continue to learn. We continue to build.

For those reasons and those names, as an immigrant, I am proud to say I am an American.

You can talk about how awesome and mighty you are all day, regardless of where you live, but I think how you conduct yourself is the best indicator of what sort of a "true X" you are.

This entire thread, just by the rude posts in it alone, makes my stomach hurt.

Shall I start naming all the great european writers, inventors, generals, philosophers...the ratio would be quite in our favour. Also I am curious what would the genetic charts say on your nation genetic heritage.

You are but children to us, sometimes font of pride sometimes worthy a scorn but you think yourselves above a good old smack on your head, and that attitude is the indicator that you are still children, not adults as you think you are.

Five centuries and some wars dont make a nation, its people do. And your people are a wild card, a conglomerate taken from all across the globe and put in a big zoo.

Arterion, I asked 10 people about Italy, it all added up to a powder keg a poverty in your lower regions. Someone even said, "Hell in a hand basket." You know more bacKwards American. Still, do something about that. And guess what? If The United States of America falls, your economy will hit a even deeper low than it already is. Italy is great, America is great, we should all go to the zoo. And I never said we made you, and you definitely did not make us. And guess what YOU AREN'T ROME! You are just on top of it. Get over yourself. America may not be perfect, but don't about how great Italian land used to be, make something today.

Well, yeah, we've done stuff, Arterion is just beating around the bush by saying we're not competent to Europe, but I have to look at Arterion's point of view here. I mean, Europe has done great things too, no doubt. Both countries are *sigh* equal, and the faster we stop with these sarcastic elitism remarks the faster we can get to actual discussion.

Anyways, the point of my list was not to brag, but to remind people that Americans are capable of more than our worst. It is not a boast, but a testament to our worth.

House of the Wolf wrote:Negative, Doros. My implication, however poorly worded, was that if the individual sees something wrong with the nation (as a state), they should do what they can to fix the problem. If possible, or if they're daunted or otherwise ill-equipped, they should be able to ask their fellow citizens (or neighbors) for help if they're willing to lend any.

Not a nanny-state interested in the livelihoods of the individuals, but an actual nation ("gang", as you described it) interested in the quality of their nation and all within it.

It's simply an ideal, but it was something we were far closer to in the past than we are at present, which would indicate that it's not so far-fetched. Hell, the Swedes actually have the closest thing to that and they're working-out just fine, so it ain't exactly fantasy.
Yeah, and I'm saying that plan only works until you stop to think about who's actually going to be doing the "fixing", and what that "fixing" means.

It is simply an ideal, I agree. And it's a dumb one (no offense- even I was young and indoctrinated once). It's the idea that everyone elses business is your business. That it's your right, nay! Your duty even, to butt in and interfere with people when your own vision of how things should be working, isn't working, and to browbeat your neighbors into getting with your program through a steady campaign of nagging and threatening. Instead of, you know, focusing on the one person you really CAN change, yourself, and trusting other people to take care of themselves, unless they specifically and individually ask for your help.

You still haven't answered my central question. Do you want me to fix you? Do you me to get a group of like-minded Dorosbots (all of whom, conveniently, agree perfectly with my vision of the Grorious Juche Future Society) to seize the reigns of this nation-gang and "improve" the quality of your life?

Stop!

Corny time!:

We, as True Americans, just need to right our ship. The Oligarchy we have, at present, shouldn't exist, and we can only do that through the power of our voice.

IMO, America's cons outweigh its pros. Why don't I move you ask?

1. I'm only 13. Unless both of my parents can find a job in a foreign country and get a place to live, it's not happening.

2. Even if I was an adult, all of my friends are here, I've been conditioned to this way of life, so I will stay here, as I can put up with most of its downsides, even if they are huge.

Frosty, I'm gonna say this to you honestly. Study more than just our cons before making statements like that. Study more than just the lies, the conspiracies, and the rumors.

Study the culture, study the music, study the people, study the literature. America is more than just actions. America is a nation like any other. It is an idea, a voice, and the collective will of millions. The minority in power do not speak for America. They speak for themselves.

That's something to aspire to, but I'd edit as "Don't complain about something unless you're willing to at least try to fix it."

I was born on the soil of the USA..I've never stepped foot off the soil of the USA.....I don't think the world revoles around America, but I will say, I don't care if my "ancestors" from 500 years ago came and "stole" this land...I consider myself a true American...I'm not hulk Hogan wearing red white n blue everywhere, but what am I supposed to say? Oh I was born in America but America is "stolen property" so ill just leave n go to whatever country of origin my "family tree" hails from.

But wait, I'm adopted, I don't know my biological parents, therefore my don't know my true ethnic origin...so what do I do?

I have to agree here, a vote is a meaningless thing to many people who say simply, why should I be concerned?

Well from my part I say that from my 18th birthday on I have voted in every referendum and election in both Italy and Slovenia.

A vote is the basic option we have to change some things in our states and many people seem to not understand this. I use my vote to promote political parties that favour my political ideas and captain my oppinion on society, law and a lot of different matters. In my case, no surprise here, are the right wing parties.

Yet a vote is a vote, be it for the left or the right, is a basic right of every citizen of age and it should be respected and used as such. To not use your vote is in my oppinion a great mistake for a citizen.
