All other answers are wrong.

-edit- Except for Cam's answer above. Although [&@%!] if "When the Eagle Cries" isn't the dumbest song this side of country music.

I love this country, but I hate it.

Yep, loathing yourself and/or your country is a very American thing for teenagers to do.

A True American, to me, is someone who adheres to the core set of values instilled into the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitution of the United States, while still aspiring to grow, improve, and evolve, as an individual as well as a nation. A True American isn't afraid to ask the tough/right questions, while still humble to their cause. A True American recognizes evil and actually does something to challenge it. A True American also recognizes when a neighbour is in trouble, and isn't too conceited to help. A True American gives a crap about everyone, be they American or not.

To me, I recognize very few True Americans in my generation, or in the recent couple generations before my own...

Why can't I as a Canadian, or anyone from Cuba or Mexico or Guatemala or Guyana, call themselves American, just as a Bulgarian or a Frenchman or a Serb or a Belgian is a European?

Jerks.
This literally made me laugh out loud. Thanks!

@Doros Stop taking advantage of my 90s weak spot, I'm trying to hate you till my last breath!

What I think about my country is beyond text wall. We need a lot of work. That being said, my underlying opinion of my home is the first line of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMjxyi0Xyt0

Denmark is best country in the world. We're one of the worlds richest countries and we're smaller than/size of a US state.

No. I never understand how people can say they hate their country. If you don't like it, and I say this as kindly as possible, get out. Seriously, if you don't like something, why surround yourself with it? I understand that sometimes people aren't in a position to get away, but otherwise, don't complain. Do something about it.

Several US states would hold positions as being in the top twenty richest countries if they were independent.

Scirb, you misunderstand the creed. It's meant to embody the feeling of protest many Americans have. Love your country, but fight it, for it. Speak up and speak the truth, that sort of thing.

I think you guys are trying to say the same thing but with different words. DL is phrasing it in an uncomfortable way.

I see. Yeah, I wouldn't phrase it quite that way, but I do agree. I like the way HotW put it. But I still stand by what I said. If you truly don't like America, I won't be sad to see you go.

If there's a person in your life you detest, it doesn't make sense to try to change them. Just ignore them, if possible, and get on with your life.

If there's a person in your life that you love, as in real love, not blind infatuation, you can recognize their flaws and still understand that they're a person you want in your life, and you will try to help them when they need help.

Loving your country is pretty much the same, in that respect.

The only problem I see with that assertion is that this Nation isn't a friend, or a colleague..it's your and our home. If something is genuinely wrong with it, it is incumbent upon you (and all of us) to fix it. If there's a hole in the roof that shouldn't be there, then you probably shouldn't ignore it or try to simply accept it.

The thing is, I just don't feel the compassion and respect (to our intelligence) coming from our country.

It's every American's duty to kick money out of our government! Through democracy, yes.

Has anyone notice how all of these threads have blended together? People keep their opinions, nothing has changed since the last debate, and no matter how different one side of politics is from another, it usually becomes the same argument. Half the time I don't even bother reading because it's been done so many times. Can we please wait a while before we have another one of these threads?

I agree that the vast majority of all elected officials should be (democratically) purged and replaced, with some exceptional exceptions.. And the ruling of Citizens United should be overturned, and lobbying/bribing/lobbyists/bribers should be banned. The only money politicians should receive is what we agree, though the ballot box, they should. I think we'd see far better results and representation that way.

Will any of that happen? ...No. :(
