the very lovely I bloom blaum - Coldplay

Not a hip band to like, but X&Y was a real stonker, and their first album was melancholically lush.

I love my E-bow, it's a great little toy. I've also got a cello bow which I wield Jonsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros-style to create epic walls of n0i53.

Coldplay? Parachutes = incredible, A Rush Of Blood = incredible bar a few dud tracks (Clocks and Daylight - Oi! Martin! No!).

X&Y I was a bit disappointed by. It's covered in the sound of a band being too ambitious. Coldplay are at their best playing melancholy acoustic rock with huge choruses. Drenching everything in synths and lyrics that sound like the very worst dregs of 70s prog rock just don't work. That said, most of side 1 is good, Twisted Logic is good and Til Kingdom Come is just amazing. They could have made a fantastic EP out of it.

What really bothers me, though, is their refusal to recruit a keyboard player to play live with them, instead piping all the synths in from tapes, basically turning Coldplay live into a 4-man karaoke act. Seriously, is it that difficult to find a keyboard player? I'd play keyboards for them if they asked me...

r; don't you have to re-rig the pick-ups - usually humbuckers - to get the cello bow to do its thang (plus raise the action)? I've never tried it, because I'm far too conventional with my single Strat.

I got into Parachutes before it went overground, and loved it (Sparks and We Never Change are my definite faves). And when the reviews and hype machine for A Rush Of Blood came around, I got pretty excited. Music journos were giving the impression that they were about to 'do a Radiohead'; and actually becoming seriously good. When I heard it? I hated it.. if ever there was a difficult second album, that's it. Barring Green Eyes, The Scientist and Clocks, the rest was just filler - I've never been more disappointed with an album in my life.

So when X&Y came around, I stayed well away. Never have I directed so much random vitriol towards a band and an album than for that. Then I grudgeingly listened to my sisters copy. And hated it even more... but slowly, somehow, it worked its way into my brain - and now I think it's genuinely one of the best modern mainstream 'band' albums of the post-Radiohead world.

Chris Martin's certainly no lyricist, but I've always liked his voice and his delivery - even if he's seemingly turned his back on truly paired down acoustic gorgeousness; I bloom blaum, See You Soon, and the also lush>>>

To just do single-note drones line Jonsi I didn't have to do anything to the set-up, but if you want to be able to play all the strings you need to adjust the action of each string so the strings are arched, like a violin.

I wouldn't recommend doing it on a Strat because the polepieces on the pickups aren't covered, meaning the rosin from the bow will get into them and as it's an electrical insulator will basically stop them from working. I use my Les Paul as my bowing guitar.

See, that makes sense. But there's no way I'd convert my one and only, even if I could. I have enough problems with crazy tunings, without having the trauma of another niche guitar sitting around waiting to be loved..

Influx - DJ Shadow
(I can't believe one of J.Davis's best is on YouTube. one of the finest 'protest-beats/sampled/cuts' tracks in existence, and evidence of DJ Shadow's monumental influence - in the old days, before he went wrong. Influx is epic stuff, and it needs to be cranked up.. - a shame the outro is cut off on this version)

One of the tracks that got me into DJ Shadow: Midnight In A Perfect World

Later With Jools Holland on the telly-box, probably the craziest line-up I've ever seen him host. The Charlatans, Pigeon Detectives, Was Not Was, The Yamato Drummers of Japan and Eartha Kitt. Hmm...
