How/when did you get into TES?

Post by Baloth-Kul »

To quote a Thalmor "beach", "What brings you to this...to Skyrim?" How did you first get into the series, and when? Heard friends talking about it, bought it, and got addicted? Randomly browsing YouTube and you stumbled upon the Skyrim trailer?

Several years ago, I rummaged through my brother's Xbox games. Morrowind caught my eye; I read the back and was intrigued, so I popped the disc into the tray--and totally lost myself in the world of Tamriel.

What about you guys? :D

It was last year. Everyone was so crazed about Skyrim, I decided to give it a chance, and really enjoyed it. (still do) Now I'm a total TES nerd. . . thus far, I've gotten Oblivion and Daggerfall. I may look into Morrowind.

Thought that, seeing as it was given such good reviews, I might as well get it for Christmas last year. Been hooked ever since.

Same here. My husband is a huge TES fan and he asked for Skyrim as a present. So I got it for him, and watched as he first played it. During the opening scene when you hear
Spoiler:
Alduin's
roar (as you are about to get executed), he asked "What was that?" And I said "It sounds like a dragon!" Sure enough, it was. From that moment on, I decided to give it a try. He had to help me get out of that original tower from where you jump into the inn. The game was hard for me...and I fell in love. <3

I don't know if I will play the other games yet, I am pretty entertained with Skyrim as it is. And my husband says this is the best one of them yet.

I think you should at least give Morrowind a try. It's fantastic.

Early 2000s, heard about something called Morrowind from a friend who recommended I look at the previews, I saw some stuff and thought it looked awful
Launch date came and I managed to snag a Xbox version for free from a friend who decided he was too good for the console
I didn't really think I played it a whole lot, then I noticed I was making pocket guides for important artifacts or quests I found and was buying the PC version without hesitation
I was addicted without even knowing it

I didn't come to grips with it until I saw the Oblivion trailers and later found myself lamenting the length of the day as I waited for the next 7 day countdown trailer...

Actually, it is funny you mention that because my husband said if I wanted to play an earlier Elder Scrolls game it should be either Morrowind or Daggerfall. It would be nice to see the rest of Tamriel!

I was a proud member of the select, unmatched, skilled, and feared Group of Seven-Year-Old Morrowind Players on the Xbox. A life changing experience that tought me the importance of reading. And they said videogames could teach you nothing. :P

Wait, was it... last year? Yeah, early last year, I picked up Oblivion, AFTER SEEING IT ON THE SHELVES FOR YEARS, and was immediately hooked. Actually, I had a played a little bit of Fallout 3 previously, and when I got Oblivion, I pretty much forgot about Fallout. I really hate to tell this story, as I kind of sound like a noob to the series (Chaos <3), but I really, REALLY have been a TES nerd for the past year, and that is something that will never change. Then I found the UESP... I've actually been on one forum or another since I was about, say, 8 years old (I know, right), so I always loved forums, and looked for them on every video game website I was addicted to. Lo and behold, here comes the UESP, and look down there, there are forums! Yep, that's about the past year of my life, may I add, one of the best. :D

Oblivion on PS3 was only launch title that looked any good, picked up for 360 when I purchased one the following year gave Morrowind a try but didn't hit the spot at the time, then played FO3 which made me desperate for Beth's next game. Skyrim didn't leave my console for 4/5 months took a break when ME3 came out and have recently picked up Skyrim again ready for the DLC. Planning on picking up Morrowind again at some point on pc so I can try the mods etc.

In 2007 I was with my little cousins in a toy store here in brazil where they sell a magazine called FullGames that every 3 months launchs a full game(with valid cd-keys and manuals) for only R$15(15 reais) around (U$ 7) and at the time there was for sale the Neverwinter Nights(with all the expansions) and Morrowind, I had a hard time choosing(since I only knew they both were rpgs) and now I'm very glad I choose Morrowind, after a year bought a new pc to run new games and the first game was Oblivion

For years, I had been watching my cousin play Oblivion. I didn't know anything about it really, other than that it looked fun as hell. 'Bout 2-3 years ago, saw it at gamestop, bought it, and have been hooked ever since.

Complete n00b here: I only heard about Skyrim because of all the fuss over how awesome it was when it came out, and I got it for Christmas. It wasn't long before I was hooked, and soon I found the UESP when I was looking up stuff about the game. Looking for a new experience, I bought Oblivion just about a month ago.
Start the groove.

Back in 2006 I rented this promising looking game called Leather Scowls: Oblivious or something. My PC couldn't run it so I forgot. Two years later I got a better PC and found a similar looking game, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I was hooked.

Me and my dad would play Warhammer (the tabletop fantasy one), and then he saw the GOTY version of Morrowind and got it because he thought, hey, they have kinda the same idea so lets check it out. I was quite young and it was my first video game, so I just had fun with shenanigans and tomfoolery. (like i foraged enough money to go to Solsthiem and I had only my starting clothes and I used moonshadow for invisibility. Went end to end like that. Good memories.) Kinda forgot about it, then I saw Oblivion in a magazine. My small childish mind knew I had to have it. So I begged my dad to preorder it and I got it and it was the best thing ever. Until I rediscovered Morrowind.

My cousin has been playing tes games since morrowind came and i saw he playing them many times. Then 1.5 years ago i saw Morrowind without expansions cost 5€ (about 6.1 USD) and bought it. I got hooked when i went getting puzzlebox and killed that wizard at the bridge. That fight is one of my best memories from video games.

I consider myself a long-time fan, since I have been a fan for like half of my life so far, and I got into it before the supercraze when Oblivion hit the 360, and Skyrim after that. Morrowind is still my favorite, but damn, Skyrim is great too.

My brother and I just got an xbox and he mentioned some game (Oblivion) about being a knight fighting demons or something, so I gave it a try and bought it, along with the novel-sized strategy guide, skimmed through most of it thinking nothing of it, popped the disc in and after 30 minutes realized for the first time what I was playing.

Being a nintendo/sega fan at age 11 I didn't really know what an rpg was, or that you could travel outside of the walls set up in different video games.

It was my first rpg-sandbox, amazing feeling, I had no limits, no time constraints, 3-D, free to roam and travel anywhere I could see, it was epic when I first crawled out of that dungeon. I couldn't grasp or handle the freedom I was given, which is one of the reasons why the game stayed in my xbox for over 4 years, I was finding some new quest or dungeon every other few days it was awesome. I still haven't played the Thieves Guild or Mages Guild.

It will always be my favorite game simply because it was such a change from the usual games I played and that I was still young and had to actually think and plan out my moves rather than just based on instinct and reaction. I picked up so much vocab too from that game.

I was on a Diablo forum when someone went on and on about this great thing called Morrowind.

Saw the box in a store. Bought it for my laptop PC.

My Morrowind experience consisted entirely of me loitering about Sedya Neen until I could steal Fargoth's cache, then venturing out onto the road only to find that Tarhiel's clothes looked hideous on me.

Poking futily at a mudcrab.

Poking futily at a Cliff Racer. And another. And another.

Murdering a pretty Breton whose outfit, alas, was missing a glove.

Getting bored with this particular part of the island, I escorted some Dumner woman to her favorite spot in the middle of nowhere, gathered up enough coin to make transport to someplace a little closer to the Red Mountain, and set out upon the road to face fresh, new challenges...

... and getting killed two seconds later. It looked like a skeleton, but it was screaming. How can it scream if it doesn't have any lungs?

Never touched it again.

Then came Oblivion. They said "...not as neck-snappingly impossible for first-time players hard as Morrowind!"

So I said "Meh." The rest is a chronicle written in blood and crab bisque.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Well, I grabbed a copy of Morrowind for $10 at a store when it was still the latest instalment in the series, though I never played it much. I played maybe 2 hours of it and put it away for about 6 years. Still haven't really gotten back into, though I've played about 170hrs of both Skyrim and Oblivion and plan to play Morrowind over the holidays since I decided to work on some textures for it.

I got into the Elder Scrolls series when I was about 11 or 12, and im nearly 19 now. I believe my friend had a spare copy of Morrowind and said that he didnt like it. He was gonna eBay his but I could have the spare copy. I installed it, played it...and I didnt get off the PC till 2 in the morning (judging I got it off my friend at about 2 in the afternoon :P).

Oblivion, I still try to play fanatically. I still am yet to complete all quests and its driving me insane to find them all...but I'm also stuck about 'what to do if not that?'. Ah, well, back on it.

Now, I may be called heathen for this, but i have never felt the same about Skyrim. It seems too detached from the other 2 (well, 3 but I dont count Arena in this) games. So I've never been that fanatical about Skyrim. The other two I would happily spend my life playing :D
