Or you could not fast travel to or from places you haven't been before. First time (and maybe second, too) I suggest you fast travel as much as you want, get a feel for the game before limiting yourself.

It takes away nearly the entire 'feeling' of the game. If you always go on foot, you'll see much more of the world. You'll find more dungeons/houses/places, earn more money, raise your skills quicker, receive more magical items found in loot etc. etc.
And it makes the game just much better. It really feels like a realistic, medieval world.

CHOOSE ONE MERCHANT AND SELL ALL YOUR STUFF TO HIM/HER

1) Choose a merchant, like Thoronir. Although he hasn't got much barter gold, he does sell all types of stuff so you can also sell him all types of stuff, like weapons, armor, potions etc. etc.
2) Boost his Disposition as high as possible.
3) Use some Charm spells.
4) Always sell your stuff here.

You don't have to raise his disposition at all. If you have raided a dungeon, you can usually get his disposition to 100 in one 'sitting', and it will stay there forever(as long as you don't do something to lower his disposition like bargaining with him and he doesn't accept the offer lowers your dispo. by 1 point)

As for fast traveling, this is merely a role-playing annoyance. If you just want to enjoy the game, go ahead fast travel. When it gets to the point when you have logged in 1000+ hours in the game, you may wonder "Hmm, I wonder what's between the Imperial City and Bruma?" and not fast travel.

I don't understand what soul gems/souls do. Could someone explain them to me?

Soul Gems are used for creating/recharging a magical item. There are Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, and Grand Souls. You trap souls with an empty soul gem and a soul trap spell. Just search 'Soul Gems' and go to the Soul Gem page ( I cant post links yet  )
