I'm getting this game

Post by sten10 »

I'm getting the Oblivion Game of the year (PS3) for my birthday (accidently walked into futurshop and saw my dad buying it.) I was just looking up about it and I was wondering what I need to watch out for (glitch/bugs wise) in the PS3 version. I already know about the Vampire cure, but are the're any others?

I'm excited about getting this game, since my friend has it (Xbox 360) and I played it a bit the other day, but it's one of those games you need to own to really enjoy it.

P.S. Please try not to post any spoilers, since I haven't actually played it myself yet?

There's no real bugs at the beginning of the game, but later on you may find some, but there's nothing really gamebreakeing...
Although, I do have two words of advice you will understand later in the game...

1.Otaco is a moron.
2.Stay away from Daedroth....

Cheers!
...and diplomacy continues to fail. Their ears fall deaf, and their eyes fall blind, yet they are still not mute. They will not know their errors. Only what they believe themselves. But we... we shall not be silenced.

Ya, you won't encounter a lot of unfixable bugs. Besides, the parts that do have them shouldn't stop you from doing the quests as they don't always happen.

To know who that is, you may need the correct spelling which is "Ocato"

There's a ruin called Miscarcand. It's west of Skingrad, north of the road you take between Skingrad and Anvil. It looks pretty big on the surface (it's big inside, too) and it has Bitterfish Goblins guarding it.

Do not go inside of it until one character actually orders you to go there. Inside is an interesting piece of treasure, but if you pick it up too early, you mess up the main story a little bit. When a main character asks you to go there and retrieve it, that's when you know that the time is right.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

This might be a slight spoiler, but it could be so much worse if you actually do it.....

Thanks for the info.
I'm skimming through the "Quest Timing" page on the main site, but there's a lot of stuff to remember. I'm thinking I'll do Knights of the Nine as one of my first quests?

That's a good choice. In Oblivion, you get better weapons at higher levels.
Say you got this enchanted sword from a quest called "Legbreaker"(thats made up) at level 4. Well when you're at level 20 it will still be the level 4 version. This is not so with the Knights of the Nine. The rewards you get from it you can "upgrade"(take the level 4 version and turn it into a level 20 version). There are no other rewards you can do that with.

If I were you, I'd skip all of the "quest timing" and stuff.

It's your first time!!! You have to enjoy it, not spend all of your time efficient leveling and timing. That ruins the roleplaying part of the game. Besides, other than the glitches/hints listed here and the Thieves Guild, there's nothing that is overly gamebreaking.

I searched my name too. Seems I'm Mathieu Bellamont... the character I hate the most in Oblivion because he's responsible of the... (SPOILER) death of my friend. :(

One of the first thing you might want to do is joining the thieve's guild. Also, you should learn to use the map to your advantage during quests and such.

I dare you to search for my name - Ksenia (or Xenia).

Go ahead, try it. Probably come up with a "nil" or "you may have misspelled it...."

I made that mistake first time around. I wasn't even paying attention as to what I was doing!
(It was my VERY first time playing Oblivion. I didn't even KNOW about fast travel.

Read a bit about respawning chests.
There are many chests in Oblivion that respawn, so if you put a valuable item inside, it'll be gone within some days.
The same story with stuff you drop on the ground, it will disappear after some time, so don't drop it!

You can buy houses in-game, the cheapest one is in the Imperial City, it costs about 4000 gold (I believe?).
You can buy it at the Imperial City Market District, you can find more information on www.uesp.net.

In houses owned by you, you can drop as many items as you want and put them in chests and stuff like that.

Also another tip: if you want the best items, do the Shivering Isles expansion when you're level 25+.
And for your first time playing, it's wise to play with a character with a high Strength, a warrior for example, so the races Orc, Nord and Redguard are perfect for this.

Other than item storage I would ignore everything else in the wiki. The first time you play through just wing it. Discover things on your own and don't worry about glitches or missing out on leveled items. Just have fun with it and play. Once you beat every quest with your first character (which pretty much everyone does) then you can think about efficiency leveling and quest rewards with your next characters. Because, if you're like the rest of us, then you'll definitely be playing the game several times over. But, for the first run, don't listen to anyone and don't read up on stuff. Just play.

Be careful where you store your equipment!!! The only safe places to use are in a house that you own. I think there may be a list of other random ones on here but that is somethig you definately need to be careful of. Most storage places respawn after about 70 something hours (in game hours) so you lose anything you put in there.

Regarding Azure's star, I wish I had taken that advice.

I won't repeat what others have said, but I'll provide some links that've been mentioned.

Houses
This describes all the houses available for purchase in the game.
Free "Houses"
This talks about some places you can acquire during quests (part of the houses page)
Safe Containers
Talks about other places that are available from the start of the game that are available all over the map. Lists some unexpected storage possibilities, like clams.

There are lots of little bugs here and there, and a few major ones. Personally, I look at the bugs section of any quest I'm planning to do, just to make sure I don't fudge up something... I just check it a while before I actually plan on doing it though, in case I see some spoilers...although since I only get to game a couple times a week, I usually forget any of them (but I remember the bugs).

Right at the end of the Tutorial (before you leave the sewers), save your game, and keep this as a separate save. This way, if you either a) flub up your character, or b) want to play a different character, you can do so without going through the tutorial again!

One more thing...SAVE OFTEN! Do not rely on the Autosave feature (mostly because it overwrites itself, so you can't go back to a previous Autosave...only an Actual save). Also, I'd recommend having two saved games. That way, if you screw up, but then only realize it a little bit later (and after overwriting your previous save), you've still got the other to fall back on.

Make a character that looks just like Sten the Ugly!

I mean, you like him right? He's your avatar and you said something like that on another topic.

Name: Sten the Ugly
Race: Nord Male
Class: (not custom) Crusader
Attributes: Strength & Endurance

EXPLORE, EXPLORE, EXPLORE....

The more places you have marked on your map, the easier it is to get around as you progress in the game. Also, things are generally levelled with you, so you should only be fighting things that you can basically feasibly handle with some effort and skill.

PICK, PICK, PICK....

Take some time to pick any different looking plants in your travels, and pick up food items. These are all alchemy ingredients and will help if you want to develop this, if not, then simply sell them.

REPAIR, REPAIR, REPAIR....

As soon as you can get some repair hammers, be dilligent about keeping your weapons and armor in tip-top shape. Damaged weapons do less damage, and damaged armor protects less...

STORE, STORE, STORE....

As others have said, get a house, or a free house, to store your stuff, as you'll soon have way more than you want to carry around with you.

I don't think this has been said before: only Black soul gems can hold the souls of NPCs and Dremora. ONLY BLACK SOUL GEMS. That includes all generic NPCs like "bandit" too.

DO NOT FAST-TRAVEL.

It takes away nearly the entire 'feeling' of the game. If you always go on foot, you'll see much more of the world. You'll find more dungeons/houses/places, earn more money, raise your skills quicker, receive more magical items found in loot etc. etc.
And it makes the game just much better. It really feels like a realistic, medieval world.

CHOOSE ONE MERCHANT AND SELL ALL YOUR STUFF TO HIM/HER

1) Choose a merchant, like Thoronir. Although he hasn't got much barter gold, he does sell all types of stuff so you can also sell him all types of stuff, like weapons, armor, potions etc. etc.
2) Boost his Disposition as high as possible.
3) Use some Charm spells.
4) Always sell your stuff here.

START WITH THE MAIN QUEST PRETTY EARLY

Here are a few tiny spoilers:
While doing the Main Quest, you'll get some items, like Iron & Leather Armor. In the beginning of the game, this is a nice inventory upgrade because when you come straight out of the sewers, you don't have a Steel Longsword or Steel Bow, but when you've reached a high level, it is worthless stuff.
One of the first quests in the Main Quest, going on around Kvatch, is pretty hard to do if you've reached a high level. In the beginning of the game, however, when you are lvl 5 or lower, it's not that hard.

EARN SOME CASH: BECOME A COMBATANT IN THE ARENA AND DO THE UMBACANO QUESTS

Search the Wiki for more information.
The Arena is fun, it makes you able to raise your skills and you'll earn some money.
By doing the Umbacano quests, you'll eventually have over 10.000 gold!

ENJOY!

Just do whatever you want, no one is going to stop you. The first priority is: Have Fun. That's what a game is for: to have fun. To have a moment of free time, to enjoy yourself.
