For me it's something angry, normally something like Slipknot's 'Sic' or something simular.

The Silver Cord by Gojira, Quiet by This Will Destroy You, Three Little Birds by Bob Marley. This list is massive. Music IS my release. Any song by a decent enough artist can put me in the zone - be it aggressive or soft.

That's a rather unfortunate name for the topic... ;)

There's a lot of songs that help me screw my head back on right.

"Good Day" by Dresden Dolls is great, and so is Amanda's "Leeds United". ("Who needs love when there's Southern Comfort?" - is that a great line to wallow in misery to or what?)

Speaking of wallowing - there's nothing like the blues for that, so Memphis Slim, Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Son House...

Frank Turner writes amazing lyrics and usually gets me a kick in the butt that I need to pick myself up. And this guy plays every song like his life depends on it and it's infectious, makes you want to just get up and do something constructive.

And old, old punk albums. I mean, Iggy and Patti old, none of that 90s in California [&@%!]. ;) That's what I listen to when I'm so angry I can't think. Or Rage Against The Machine sometimes, but that just makes me stay angry, so I guess that works only when I want to stay righteously [&@%!] off for a while.

To clear my mind a bit I choose some Boards of Canada. Or if I'm angry some real industrial or grindcore like Godflesh or PitchShifter.

Motorhead - Ace of Spades, used to crank it right up when hooning around in my 2nd car at 2am, my first car couldn't hoon it only produced 29BHP, pulled to the left and the boot would pop open when you went round a corner (not ideal in the UK).
