Others can see the demon if he's out of his Magi, demons are often not really limited but a taletell sign is a piece of jewellery that the Magu never takes off, this is actually the demon's bindment, Demons have to be connected to the magi at all times, but they can be shadow distance away, but far away in night/dark places.

I just assumed they binded to your soul. That they were inside you and then force their way out when they so wish. Didn't know you needed jewelry.
