TESO - Retake TES
This thread is for those that love TES and wish to protect it from the ravages of the MMO.
As TES: Online draws nearer, TES fans who support it will find many places to discuss aspects of the game, whilst TES fans that support an MMO-free TES will have less opportunities minus bashing it on announcement threads. Here, then, TES fans who do not like the MMO may suggest strategies to defend and promote The Elder Scrolls for everyone.
Example suggestions:
1) Don't buy the MMO
2) Form a mod community to "port" lore-consistent, interesting parts of the MMO to the singleplayer realm
3) Support Bethesda in making Elder Scrolls VI
4) Promote Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall and Arena amongst the wider game-playing public

Re: TESO - Retake TES
1 -Isn't this the forum of a wiki that covers TES games? Suggesting people not buy Elder Scrolls games is kind of a conflict of interest for this site, isn't it?
2 - That one sounds pretty cool.
3 - Bethesda has already stated they're going to continue making single player Elder Scrolls games. In fact, if you'd paid attention to the press releases so far you'd be aware that Zenimax Online is making the MMO. It's a different developer team that works for the same company.
4 - A lot of us here already do that, although I wouldn't play anything earlier than Morrowind for fun any more. Arena and Daggerfall were great games for their time but they're so ancient and buggy that I find them tedious from a gamer's perspective.

Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Or alternatively, don't be a dick and just ignore the game? You don't want it, but others do. To each their own.

Re: TESO - Retake TES
Number two is going to be a tad difficult if you follow number one...
And I don't think bashing anything and generally being actively against something is the way to go here. It's one thing to voice your reservations, speculate on the possible consequences of TESO (and its success of failure) for the rest of TES franchise, or imagine potential problems with the expanding player-base and ways of dealing with them. It's another to organize a campaign to hurt the TESO project as much as possible.
IMHO if you really want to act against something you see as bad, the best way is to support something good in its place. So numbers three and four on your list look just fine to me. Number two is a great idea, but to do that you'd need to actually play TESO. Number one, and the general attitude of "defending" TES against a mostly imaginary enemy - not so much. Like Mars said - don't be a dick.

I agree. This thread is for those who aren't optimistic about the MMO.Mars wrote:To each their own.

And in it you're proposing to hurt the production of the MMO as much as possible.Gaffer wrote:I agree. This thread is for those who aren't optimistic about the MMO.Mars wrote:To each their own.

Re: TESO - Retake TES
What's nice about the MMO is that it at least won't be continuing the series as "TES 6," which was really my largest reservation about it. As it stands we will continue to see the TES series in the form with which we are familiar, alongside the MMO variety. The MMO is set so far in the past that it will have no effect on any future single-player games, and, as far as I know the lore from that period is fairly scarce, so not a lot can be "ruined" in that respect. Personally, my biggest concern is that the art style won't be very consistent with the series as a whole (though I suppose it hasn't really been consistent anyway) but aside from that I'm fairly open-minded about it. It's an MMO--it clearly won't be exactly like the single-player games and it may not have the best story, but that is to be expected. If nothing else there is a small part of the greater TES narrative that has a...strange storyline and the rest is fine.
I'm not trying to start an argument or anything, I just don't see what point there is to actively opposing this, especially when it seems that there is a very small chance that it would have any effect on the single-player games. And, finally, you say that you want to promote and defend TES. While I don't really see how it needs to be defended, I agree that it could always be promoted some more--and how better than through an MMO?

just curious, but was there this sort of backlash and blowback to Battlespire? just wondering b/c from what I understand it was an early iteration of an MMO ... no?

Battlespire was just a really bad game that was not only rushed but just unplayable for plenty. And if by early iteration of an MMO, you mean it supported 8 players at one time then sure. Ultimately, Bethesda screwed up big time on this one. They should have waited a few years and took their time to really work on this. Then, they would have had Diablo 2, lol.
Battlespire (1997):
-Bad Graphics
-Linear
-Actiony Gameplay
-8 player mp for pvp and doing adventures
-Not very fun
Diablo 2 (2000):
-Slightly below average graphics
-Linear
-Actiony Gameplay
-8 player mp for pvp and doing adventures
-Very fun...enough to last you 10 years
-------------------------
So clearly, Battlespire had potential but Bethesda's awful handling of it spoiled it for everybody.

Ummm.... I do believe that the MMO is called "The Elder Scrolls: Online."
So... How are you "defending" The Elder Scrolls by saying that the next one is [&@%!]?
(Even though it is NOT TES6, in fact some people here have said that it's not even being made by Bethesda.)
Can't you just treat it as a completely different game and be happy about it?

Re: TESO - Retake TES
I just wish people wouldn't be so hard on the ESO. It really looks cool, plus it's based in the First Era so it doesn't conflict with the modern ES games.
Have you seen the interviews with the director of the game? He's been playing pure Elder Scrolls on PC from Arena until Skyrim, and he seriously knows his Elder Scrolls lore. He and his team sound extremely dedicated. I really want to see wht this MMO project grows into.
