How do I kill things?

I know it sounds like a stupid question, but how do I kill things? I just got the free download of Daggerfall and I can't figure out how to kill that rat in the tutorial dungeon(yes, I have the tutorial help on). Firstly, I don't really know how to aim. I spent a few minutes getting hit by the rat before I figured out how to go into sneak mode so I can see the darn thing. Is there a way to aim down so I don't have to do this? Secondly, is there a technique to swinging a sword to make sure you hit your target? I saw blood once, but I was swinging like crazy so I should have had more hits. Any help provided would be greatly appreciated.

First of all - check the controls for the keys that allow you to look down and up (I don't remember them right now), then you can actually see the rat biting your ankles. If the default controls don't work for you, you can customize them.

To swing your sword you need to hold the right mouse button and move the mouse cursor across the screen. Try different directions of movement - horizontally from side to side, top to bottom and bottom to top, diagonally across the screen - each makes the weapon move differently and each is associated with a different effect - here is an explanation of that and some useful combat strategy tips.

Thanks for the tips and that link. I'll go try that out right now and hopefully I won't get killed by the first creature I come across this time.


Edit: I just killed the rat and a bat, but was killed by every other creature in the dungeon haha

If you wantto use mouse-look, you can set that up in the mouse controls, but i found i had to save and reload the game for it to take effect and make the cursor disappear.

The cursor sometimes also remains after using a menu or something. Just save and reload to make it disappear.

EDIT:
I believe pressing {enter} may also solve the cursor appearing, by hiding it. (Used for showing/hiding the cursor). But I have not tested if it works properly.
