Re: MMO announced.
It's "antiethical" to make a game that you think people will pay for? You can't be serious. Something like trying to scam kids who play Farmville by getting them to use their parents' cell phones to incur hidden charges is unethical. But creating a game and having a clear pricing model, where the only issue seems to be that it's set in the same fantasy world as some single player games you like? REALLY??
What about TES Travels, has the existence of those games ruined your experience of the main series? Of course not, and neither will this.
Don't get me wrong--I see all sorts of potential issues with this game. But it is not a question of ethics at all.

Re: MMO announced.
Unethical, or antithetical? Cuz antiethical isn't a word. Milking an IP for financial gain isn't unethical, but one might say that sacrificing quality or authenticity for the sake of said milking is antithetical to (against the spirit of; at cross purposes with) Beth's traditional design philosophy.
Course, we don't know that Zenimax has done that yet, while we do know that the studio is collaborating with the lore wizards at Beth, including Sir Todd himself (per a sidebar on one of the scans). In any event the game has another ~year of development to go, and everything from lore to mechanics to pricing models is still subject to revision.

Re: MMO announced.
That's exactly what I meant. I guess I'd like to hold on to this romantic notion that there still is a fundamental difference between the gaming industry and, let's say, double-glazing companies. It should be at least partly about the creative process, artistic integrity and passion, not just about the quarterly statements - and that point of view is unfortunately the only explanation I can think of for attaching a generic MMO to TES.Will Zurmacht wrote:Milking an IP for financial gain isn't unethical, but one might say that sacrificing quality or authenticity for the sake of said milking is antithetical to (against the spirit of; at cross purposes with) Beth's traditional design philosophy.
But hey, maybe I've got it all wrong, and they somehow manage to create a game that fits perfectly into TES universe and totally revolutionizes the MMORPG genre. I don't know how it could be possible, but I suppose that's why it would be revolutionary, right?

so anybody have any idea what the combat is like? I know it wont be like skyrims combat but is it gonna be the same old point and click, turn based combat, or will there be some form of real-time combat but not the same level of intensity as skyrims? thats kind of what i really want to know about because i think it will be weird to have the elder scrolls combat im used to, become turn based and such.

Re: MMO announced.
For me, I real feel that Fatigue management will be key for combat in the MMO, making it far more tactical than anything we've seen in the TES franchise so far. Straying away from real-time combat may not be a hugely terrible thing in this regard, as combat in the MMO will be far more complex, IMO, than combat like Oblivion's, which at times devolved into simple button mashing. That, and just consider the difficulties associated with transferring that much data (I've read up to 100 v 100 PvP battles), in real-time, and the problem of lag, which could really break the combat system, were it real-time.Smolgen wrote:so anybody have any idea what the combat is like? I think your right and it will add something different from the single player serie. But do you know if this fatigue system will apply to mages since it will obviously apply to melee classes. i just dont see how that would work.OblivionDuruza wrote:For me, I real feel that Fatigue management will be key for combat in the MMO, making it far more tactical than anything we've seen in the TES franchise so far. I agree, however, we do know from Morrowind that Fatigue has been applied fairly successfully to the Magic system in the past. I would guess that casting spells and using other abilities relies upon Fatigue in some way, in a similar fashion.

My Optimistic Side: YES YES YES This will be amazing! I can't wait to explore all these new places, Redguard, Summerset Isles, Valenwood, Eleswyr, Black Marsh, Orsinium! This will catapult the games of Elder Scrolls to complete world dominance!! Bring on the excitement!
My Pessimistic Side: Oh god I wonder how much Money they have spent on this, If this fails, The Elder Scrolls IP could be doomed...What if this was another WoW clone? Oh no.
Also, Not to be a pessimist, but with the coming of Elder Scrolls online, think how many new people will come to the these forums...Yes, that's a great thing, but with the fans comes the Trolls, and the Haters, and the Spammers. Brace for impact.

Yeah I know that, but back then, I wasn't the avid Imperial supporter I am now. It just doesn't feel right. Atleast when I played them I knew of no such thing as 'Imperials', now it is just another part of how I play Elder Scrolls. I honestly think it will just be downgraded from what it is in single player to being a resource for melee fighters, much like rage or energy in other mmo'sSmolgen wrote:I think your right and it will add something different from the single player serie. I think I've said this before, but I really feel that this thread should not be allowed to be filled with negativity and winging about TESO. I understand that some people don't like the idea, but that doesn't mean they have to spoil it for the rest of us. By all means, state your displeasure and make it known, but don't drag that on into numerous posts in reply to people who are actually looking forward to what the MMO might hold, or who are interested in knowing more.

Re: MMO announced.
This has nothing to do with "mini-modding" and accusing me of such doesn't validate your point, nor diminish mine. I'm stating my opinion about the incessant complaints, because frankly, I dislike it. This thread should be about news and new info about TESO, so that people who are actually interested can learn more and thus make educated choices with regards to it. Most of the people complaining here are not interested in the MMO, and don't care about any new developments or news, so why hang around this thread and clutter it up? (I'll remind you to look at the huge number of posts this thread has gathered in only the space of a few days).
Now, it's fine if you want to complain, i'm not saying otherwise, but do we have to do it here? If you're so concerned about how the franchise will go to [&@%!] over this MMO, then why not start discussing the franchise in a seperate thread in Multimedia or TES General? There, you can complain and whine to your hearts' content without doing it here.

Re: MMO announced.
After reading pages of this I can only think of 3 things:
1) The WHOLE of Tamriel! They haven't done that since arena and the world has changed a lot since then. Im guessing each province will have its final boss encounter, ex: Elsweyr; The halls of colosus.
2) Another MMO? Arent there like a thousand of those out there but most people only know the beast WoW has become. I really hope TESO does something original. Until now the most original thing I've seen is that they have 3 factions instead of 2... Also, I hope that it isn't P2P. I am not paying monthly to play a game that I already bought...
3) Oh Deadra, the Wiki. Think of the Wiki! With this new game coming people will look for a Wiki. I have always come to UESP because it was the best and most reliable source but... most of its info came from the construction sets and game files. Its obvious that TESO will not have a Construction Set. So the point is, how are we going to have reliable articles? Think about the thousands of stubs that will be created! Also as it has been mentioned before: hundreds, no, THOUSANDS of people will be looking for a forum too! Its likely that we will get some new and friendly users but think of the trolls, the spammers, the botz!
In conclusion:
So long as the Blood of TES run strong in her games, the glory of the Empire shall extend in unbroken years. But should Zenimax fail, and should no game of our joined blood respects the lore and the player, then shall the Empire descend into darkness...

If the mods share your point of view then by all means put a "if you don't have something good to say then shut up" sign at the "door".
For me being pessimistic puts me in a win win situation :
If it flops then I was right and I don't end up disappointed.
If it's a success then hurray! We would finally have the chance to explore Tamriel as a whole and with our friends no less who share our love for TES.

Yeah, you have a right to voice your opinion. I also have the right to voice my opinion that your opinion is adorably ridiculous.
Also, free speech doesn't necessarily apply here. This board probably isn't run or funded by a government entity, so the mods aren't compelled to allow anybody to just spout off with no limit. "Free speech" comes into play by anyone not liking how the mods run these boards just going and making their own boards.

Technically, there is no freedom of speech in Australia, so perhaps it's a 'basic' right some people take for granted
. All I'm saying is, you're entitled to your opinion, and you can voice it, even if it is negative, I don't recall ever saying that people should not be allowed to dis the MMO at any stage. However, it annoy me when I come to a thread to read up on the MMO only to have to read through scores of negative posts, many by the same authors, stating and restating that TESO will be the death of the series, that it will be terrible, and writing it off before we even know more than a few snipits about it.
Yes thank you, I am aware that this thread does not stipulate that it should be limited to information, however, it was made a Global Announcement after it was posted by the OP, and as such, I' d rather my Global be informative and for there to be a thread filled with people arguing about whether the MMO will kill TES or not, or speculating about what the MMO might encompass, than the reverse scenario.
