Do You Consider Yourself A Gamer?
So, like the title says, do you consider yourself a gamer? Or are you just someone who plays Elder Scrolls games because THEY ARE THE GREATEST ON EARTH? Please post your thoughts on the subject.

If you played elder scrolls, you are a gamer.

No, I wouldn't say so at all. I, for one, would not consider myself a gamer. I've played at most seven video games my entire life.Free wrote:If you played elder scrolls, you are a gamer.

Gamer is such a strange word. Do you call somebody who reads books a booker? Anyway I'm a huge nerd who loves video games. So yeah I would say so.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

Re: Do You Consider Yourself A Gamer?
If you met me in real life you wouldn't think so due to how I look and how I act, and games aren't really something that ever comes up in conversation with most of my mates(except when we have a multiplayer session with a few beers and smokes). To be fair I don't even play that many different games, I just like a select few.
I only have one friend that is into TES, but he is a lot like me in the fact you would be surprised he was into that sort of thing. I guess deep down we all have a bit of nerdiness in us... but who gives a crap right? these days society is much more accepting of technology junkies, even my mother sits there on her phone all night. Back in the day it was considered geeky to play games, but now with the release of easy online play that sort of attitude is slowly fading from all the social groups.

If I tell my friends that I didn't play at least one video game over the weekend they react with shock and confusion. So yeah, I guess I could be a, what did you call it, a 'gamer'.

Yeah, I'm a pretty big nerd. Not that you could tell that from just looking at me, since I tend to be rather outgoing. I love to go out walking around the city with my friends, laughing at everything and doing stupid crap when no one's watching. So yeah, I'm a gamer.

I'm a total gamer. I play everything from Mario to Mortal Kombat. (not so much that second one...) I hear people say that they played a game for "4 hours straight", they call it a record, and laugh at them. Outside of school, gaming is my life. I may not be a what most people think when they hear gamer, since I'm not the Halo or CoD type, but If you spend most of your free time playing a video game, then you're a gamer. When I'm bored, I play Super Mario Brothers, in my HEAD. I have gone to bed planning out Pokemon battles, the DDR arrows never stop coming up and the Guitar Hero notes never stop coming down in my eyes. I have nightmares about Mehrunes Dagon appearing and killing my pikmin, dreams of having my squadron of Clone Troopers charge Ganondorf's stronghold.

Its always cool to have at least one friend you can share the ''nerdiness'' with..
My other friends (in America you know them as ''jocks'') usually look at us confused when he and I start our ''nerdiness''conversations.

I've always played video games. But in my environment its considered a boys thing.
And in my environment its ''cool'' when you only played sports games or shooters.
But when you have resorted to rpgs like elder scrolls, mass effects, dragon age etc.. then your seen as a ''gamer geek'' (or whatever that means)

Re: Do You Consider Yourself A Gamer?
No, I don't consider myself to be a gamer. I've played various incarnations of Sim City, some Minesweeper and Freecell, and then I just happened to get recruited to play a few more serious games by a close friend from college or my boyfriend. I might try a new game every 2 or 3 years at the most.
Gaming is not a topic that has ever come up when I talk to the moms of my daughter's friends--imagine that.
Even among coworkers, it's something they just don't talk about, but I suspect it might be because they don't want to look like slackers.

Re: Do You Consider Yourself A Gamer?
First things first I'm British, and the 'jocks' where actually not top of the social food chain back in my school days(nearer the middle actually, and tend to be considered a bit geeky by those who like to label everyone). Very strange that they are top in America, but I think that might be due to their overly competitive nature...Free wrote:That's exactly me.. (without the beer and smokes)

Anyway, I know where you are coming from and you seem a lot like how I am. This was my first internet forum, and the only one I've spent more then a week on... I guess I need to feed my nerdy side somehow aye?
Lot's of my mates are addicted to the Modern Warfare and FIFA series... not to say I don't enjoy a mess about with them, but talking about them all the time would drive me nuts. They don't quite have the same uniqueness of RPG's, so if games like the ones I listed turn up in conversation I have very little to say about them. That's really as far as most of my mates have delved into the gaming world.

Re: Do You Consider Yourself A Gamer?
Well, that depends...I mean, how are we defining a "gamer"?
I really enjoy playing video games - albeit casually. I remember watching my oldest brother rock out on his NES to Mario and besting my peers in Duck Hunt, Mario Kart, Duke Nukem, and what have you; I spent my high school afternoons going to the boardwalk with my friends to play at the arcades and attract crowds on the DDR machines; and, yes, I took off of work for the Skyrim release. When I want to relax, I wake up and go for a run; then I come home and read a book; then I sit down and play a video game. I met my first boyfriend over video games; I broke up with my last serious one over video games (and other things, but video games had to do with it). I've always loved video games and I like the way that they tell a story and let me get over imaginative over something. When I play a lot of video games, I also happen to be at my most productive state for drawing and writing.
Would I call myself a gamer? I'm not super serious about it; it's really just something I enjoy, along the lines of the other things I enjoy. I mean, I also like kayaking, but I'm not a kayaker; and I like art, but I'm not an artist by any means of the term. Plus, I do have the problem of looking like this and not really coming off at the bar as "the chick who probably knows every single detail about The Elder Scrolls and can whoop my ass at Duke Nukem."
In fact, last year, after not really being too public about it with my university peers and my coworkers - although I didn't spend nearly as much time on the computer back then as I do now, since I was studying and working all day - I told some of them that I'm actually a big video game fan. Their reaction was, "What, really? You play video games? You?" But in the end they said, "Oh, well, okay!" and then went on to tease me about it, so I knew they were perfectly okay with it. I even very shyly, after realizing how dorky it was, said to my current boyfriend that I was a big fan of TES, and he, rather unabashedly, went off about the vampire quest from Oblivion and how it was so hard. He didn't even bat an eye...and it was really impressive. He didn't even bother to comment on it. He just accepted it as part of who I am.
I think the biggest question isn't whether or not I consider myself to be a gamer, but whether or not I can tolerate the social stigma that "successful and pretty girls don't play video games." Which is silly. It's like guys can't wear pink or Irish people can't choose a glass of water over a beer. I mean, I'm proud to say I'm a geek - because I am about the things I'm geeky about - but there's also that weird part of people that says, "Dude, there's no way they're right." I actually hate saying I'm a geek now because I feel like everyone suddenly became a technology loving, game meme repeating, cool T-shirt wearing geek...and I was doing that way before it was cool or I was even remotely socially acceptable. So there!
In the end, I just say, "Screw it" and do what I want. I'm happier this way.

Re: Do You Consider Yourself A Gamer?
Well... I got pregnant at age 20 when I was still in college, and then I married the father (against all common sense) because he promised to take care of our future daughter and me. I didn't get to drink on my 21st birthday or my wedding, what with being pregnant and all. Then, after a few more years of an abusive relationship, he dumped me (he got bored with me after totally crushing my personality, apparently). Now as a single mom, I get to worry about things like how my boyfriend relates to my daughter, and how he feels about the fact that I don't want to have a child with him, when I was willing to have a child with a total jerk. Also, because I share custody with my ex, moving away from Seattle is not an option unless I want to pretty much give up being a parent and instead pay my ex child support.unokitsune wrote:I'll be 30 in 4 years. So I would say being a mother has had its ups and downs.
The good news is that my life has never been better. My daughter is old enough to be a really sweet kid who is lots of fun to be around, I'm 100% financially independent which gives me SO much more freedom, and I'm in a great healthy long term relationship. But 4 years ago, there's no way I could have seen motherhood as a good thing, as much as I've always loved my daughter.

Interesting thread. Growing up, PC games were always a giant hobby of mine but outside of my family and cousins I didn't know any 'gamers' and so with school and such I don't think I ever talked about it.

I pretty much play every new game that comes out, I have a pretty high-end rig and I have game posters on my walls, so yes I think I can be called a gamer. And I'm not ashamed of it. n_n

But yes, I am a gamer. I enjoy a variety of different games, and enjoy hearing people talk about games and seeing other people play games. Do I spend all day, every day, locked in my mom's basement eating cheetos and gaming out? No. But I will play a half hour game of FIFA, or an hour of Assassin's Creed. I'll play 10 minutes of games on Miniclip, or indulge in a 6 hour game binge of ES or Civ. I consider the qualification of a gamer to be simply, someone that enjoys video games. So my mom would fit that category since she likes her facebook games, and my dad'll play a couple rounds of Wii bowling from time to time. Even my sister is a gamer for the Angry Birds game on her phone.

Yes, I am most definitley a gamer.
Why just today I got stuck into Test Drive Unlimited 2; and then had a quick kick around on Fifa Street.
And to top it off, I went on Skyrim for a little while too.
I play a wide variety of games, and a lot of them.
