Recent Forum Changes

Post by Daveh »

As some people may have noticed in the past day or two there have been a number of minor changes to the forums...most of them on purpose.
  • Regular upgrade from 3.0.8 to 3.0.10
  • Added a "Chatroom" channel for forum related chat. It should just be going to the #uespforums channel on irc.xertion.org although I just notice now it is a self-generated channel (doesn't make any difference to how you use it though). If you need more features/permissions, such as assigning channel admins, for it just let me or a forum admin/mod know.
  • Changed the Google search bar in the upper right on the request for a better forum search. Whether this is actually "better" or not is up for debate but it is the quickest solution I can give at the moment. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be many options for better phpbb searches, at least as far as I can tell.
  • Changed limit of PMs to 500 for registered users.
  • Small format change to the top menu bar making it take up less space. Any number of style changes can be made as needed, just let me know.
  • Renamed the "UESP Admin" group/rank to the more appropriate and less confusing "Wiki Sysop".
  • Removed "forums.uesp.net" from breadcrumb link in upper-left.
  • Restored the quick reply section at the bottom of topics.
  • Increased number of comments viewed in a topic from 15 to 25 (this is arbitrary and changed be changed to whatever as needed).
If you have more ideas or suggestions on things needing to be fixed or added just let me or any forum admin/mod know. I'm open to pretty much anything your imagination can come up with although my time and, unfortunately, abilities are limited.

3 April Updates
  • Fixed the polls (I think)
  • Assigned OP rights to moderators in chat (ongoing)
  • Fixed the login admin link issue

Love the changes except...
1. No quick reply box at the bottom.
2. I like the UESP square! It sounds picky, but I'd rather see the whole UESP logo.

Good comments...I have no idea where the "quick reply" went to but I'll look into it. The old logo can be easily changed back if desired (I'll leave it for a bit and see what the general reaction is).

I've finalized the chat channel to #uespforums on irc.xertion.org. I am the channel founder so I can give mod/OP privileges to people who need it (forum admins and mods who frequent the channel). If this is you let me know.

Up at the top, it says

forums.uesp.net Board index » UESP » UESP Site

where it used to say

Board index » UESP » UESP Site

I know, a minor gripe, but less clutter is always good.

Also, instead of "Board Index", it's reading "forums.uesp.net Board index", so there's room for improvement there as well. Thanks so much! Is there a list of all the features you added? Or do the ones in the OP cover that?

I rather like the new wiki-link logo and the efficient use of space, definitely an improvement in my opinion

Great! For now I definitely think all of the UESP moderators (we greenies) need some special powers to keep things running smoothly. We haven't finalized a staff yet, but if any members are interested in helping out, why don't you let us know? :D

A couple of quick things, that may or may not be unique to browsing from my phone.

1. The layout seems wider, meaning that it appears smaller on my screen. I'm assuming this has something to do with the changes at the top of the page. Everything just seems more condensed. Not really a problem, since zooming is simple enough, just and observation.

2. When I click the next button at the bottom of a thread, it takes me to the bottom of the next page, rather than the top.

Edit: in a similar way to number 2, when I click board index at the bottom of the page, it takes me to the bottom of the index page.

Interesting....we're definitely not mobile friendly at the moment which is another thing some effort could be applied to if this is something that members use regularly.

It definitely seems to be my phone, as I am not having the problems now from my computer, unless you'e changed something in the last half hour.

If it helps at all, I have a Motorla Droid 2, Verizon is my carrier, and I just using the web browser that's standard on the phone.

Did I ever tell you I love you Daveh! The new Search Bar also seems like it will be a great feature.

Edit: Is it just me, or are others unable to vote in polls since the change?

Diggin' the changes. Did a test search and the accuracy is much better than it was before. Though, the ability to refine the search by wiki, forums, etc. which was in place several hours ago, yielded even better results.

I think it's happening for everyone. "The submitted form was invalid."

I hate the adds on the bottom of the page please get rid of them as some auto-download viruses to your computer.

The new (or old, I haven't been around long) logo is better than the old one to me. The Google bar is a nice addition. I still got a beef with the ads though. The PM counter moved to 500 is better, but who really needs to save that many messages? Aside from mods and whatnot...
