The Timestrider Prophecy - REDUX

Post by JVElEven »

This is a redux of an RP I stared some time ago, which kinda stalled, but still has interest voiced about it from time to time. I therefore have redone it. Since it technically was never dead, it's technically not new either. But do give it a go.
The Timestrider Prophecy

For millennia, Chironea was safe. The humans stuck to the open steppes and coastal plains on the outer parts of the circular continent, while the hexfolk, the wizard people of the wilderness, lived in silence in the forests and the highlands lying just within the plains and steppes.

What little the humans got to know of their elusive neighbours was mostly of the magical people’s seers. The hexfolken had many of such ‘prophets’, famed for their ability to see future events and recounting them to the masses. Most famous of these was the seer Danoch the Fair, revered for his ability to see clearer than anyone else, and to be able to at least somewhat accurately predict when in the future his visions occurred. For his entire adult life, he lived in a gleaming tower standing in solitude on a plateau, a mass of disciples living in makeshift huts around it, waiting to hear the master’s next prophecy, for whenever he had one, he would shout it to the masses for everyone to hear and interpret. Except his last one. This one prophecy, known only by the quizzical name “The Timestrider Prohpecy”, was never told to anyone. In the year 2039, the century-old prophet collapsed in his study, only accompanied by the scribe who collected his visions for posterity. The old man, clearly in pain, used his last breaths to recite his prophecy to the scribe before passing.

The prophecy was never revealed by the scribe, who left the tower in a rush, taking with him two written recordings of the prophecy. One of them he split into pieces and hid in different hexfolk libraries, the other he took to his grave. When questioned about the prophecy, the scribe would always grimace, say “Timestrider” and leave.

Such it remained for over a millennia following the scribe’s death. The Timestrider Prophecy became the greatest mystery and conspiracy theory in hexfolken history, many doubting its existence, and equally many insisting it to be the herald of the apocalypse. But no one knew where to look for it. It was believed to be lost forever.

But then, 1200 years after Danoch the Fair’s death, a young human explorer named Edar, who had ventured into the wild forests in search of fame came across a simple tomb near the hexfolken capital of Gerespykh.

When he exited the tomb again, his destiny had been changed forever. He left for the open lands of his home, taking with him a withered piece of paper pried from the skeletal hands of long dead, old hexfolken male.

Back in the human settlements, Edar stirred unrest by spreading rumours about the hexfolk. Few paid him any heed. After all, he claimed the hexfolk was trying to destroy all humanity, and why would they do that? Sure, they were a bit strange and outlandish, but they stuck to themselves.

The little group he did collect, however, were fiercely loyal to him, and in the year 3256, they spread out in the major human kingdoms as Edar once again ventured towards the inner rings of Chironea, this time passing through the deciduous and coniferous forests just within the steppes of the humans. He ascended the mythical Endeavour Wall, a steep cliff, two miles tall, protruding out of nowhere, ending the forests abruptly. He went further in than even the hexfolk, who rarely ventured longer than a few dozen miles onto the plateau that formed the wall.

It is said he reached the Seven Sages, the tallest mountains of Chironea, forming the very center of the continent. But no one knows. Edar the Black never returned from his last journey. But soon, the world would change for his favor.

It began slowly, no one noticed it because it was gradual. Then, one day, the sun set two hours late, and by the time anyone began paying attention, Edar’s followers, known as the Blackcoats because of their eponymous black robes, began inciting against the hexfolk with great fervor. They claimed they were stopping time so they could enslave the humans, and that they needed to strike first to have a chance.

Again, no one paid attention. But then, rumours about the strange paper Edar had returned with 20 years earlier spread. As the mentioning of the doomsday prophecy Edar had salvaged from the forests began, people began swaying towards the Blackcoats, granting them more influence and power.

Time stopped completely one moonless, clear nigh in 3260. And as it did, so did the aging of the hexfolk. Their mastery of magic was tied to the fabric of time itself, and as such, their bodies became trapped in a limbo. And while the hexfolk started investigating how to start Time, the Blackcoats readied themselves.

3 years after time stopped, the magical communication from a few isolated towns died. The government at Gerespykh was confused, and sent people to investigate. None of them returned. By the time the hexfolk realized what was going on, the refugees from these unlucky first towns were already guiding the human armies towards the next target, and then the next, and then the next.

Gerespykh fell after 150 years. Soon thereafter, the last hidden towns and cities shut themselves off, Breaking off communication with each other.

The hexfolk never found out what happened to Time. They barely got started on their studies before all efforts were directed to an attempt to prevent the impending invasion. A few had mentioned old myths as the answer, and another few were suggesting a new scrying of all unfulfilled prophecies.

No one thought of the Timestrider Prophecy.

The sun has been gone for eight centuries. Only the town of Olinesti, home of perhaps the oldest mystical archive in Chironea still stands proudly, hidden in the deep reaches of the coniferous hills covering the last 100 miles before Endeavour Wall.

If the hexfolk shall prevail, time has to restart. But the remaining 1000 people in Olinesti who hasn’t died of illness, accidents or suicide is numbed by the darkness and lack of aging. Time is running out, because how long will it take until the humans find the town? How can they restart time?

Gameplay:

You will play as a young hexfolken, living in Olinesti. From there, the story will evolve over time. This is not a freeform RP, and though you might get a say in what you want to do, the story is ultimately decided by the DM. It risks being a lenghty ride, so be prepared to stick with it or get killed off. Sorry.

Standard RP rules follows:
1. Use proper grammar, punctuation, spelling etc.
2. Listen to the DM.
3. No god-modding. You only control your own character.
4. One character pr. person.
5. If one wants to join after the commencing of the RP, one must get a special permission from the DM.
6. You must get your character accepted before joining.
7. Have fun.
8. Be active, or the DM will kill you off. Unless you have a reason.
9. The DM is almighty.

Character creation:

Guidelines are as follows:

1. You have to be hexfolken. No being a human.
2. Clothes has to be medieval-ish, and not overly stylish. The hexfolk are a pracitcal people.
3. Hexfolk are generally at most 1 meter 55 cm tall, and their hair are either brown or in shades of grey (ranging from pure white to pitch black). Eyes can be any colour, literally. No restrictions, except no too bright colours. They also have pointy ears of a lenght of between 20 and 40 centimetres. Apart from that, you have free reins completely.
4. You have to be between the age of 13 and 19.
5. Please don't specify any magical abilities. Your starting magical skills is a bit further down this post.

6.

Naming:

This slightly strange sub-post in an opening post is due to me having spent extreme amounts of time on the cultural aspects of this, and thus I'd be a little disappointed if I got a dozen people named "John".

As such, I'm afraid you'll have to adhere to a list of prefixes, infixes and suffixes. It's a bit harsh and mightily arbitrary, but I have made a large list of each of them for you to use. Please bear with me on this one pet peeve. Also, I know it's a confusing system I've used for listing them, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Prefixes (All of them are unisex):

Akh-, Ar-, Aner-, Bit-, Brn-, Cas-, Cars-, Calt-, Cor-, Cul-, De-, Ette-, Equ-, Far-, Ferr-, Gri-, Gura-, Hón-, Hîc-, Im-, Ira-, Itet-, Jil-, Jors-, Jot-, Kal-, Kar-, Kat-, Ker-, Kir-, Kul-, Lar-, Leni-, Lom-, Lon-, Luz-, Me-, Mih-, Mihai-, Mir-, Noll-, Nurt-, Ovi-, Ora-, Onta-, Pilar-, Pint-, Por-, Qas-, Ri-, Roi-, Runta-, Ser-, Sil-, Solan-, Trai-, Tukh-, Ur-, Usi-, Uze-, Uzt-, Vy-, Vyrn-, Wal-, Xan-, Xar-, Xas-, Xerri-, Xint-, Xorh-, Xurn-, Yris-, Yss-, Zuil-, Ztsun-.

Infixes (These are optional and all are unisex):

en-, et-, eu-, ri-, tioi-, ura-, urrin-, utzas-, xinis-, ztamp-, a-, e-, i-, o-, u-, s-.

Suffixes (Male):

-ssis, -gonid, -din, -imir, -mir, -koros, -seppin, -as, -iel, -riel, -gel, -mikats, -aton, -hotep,
-rukh, -tein, -ling, -bandos, -der, -mian, -on, -ent, -i, -angeo, -diu.

Suffixes (Female) :

-nella, -mezea, -xinell, -toria, -riga, -arpena, -min, -java, -ka, -ác, -tetea, -yodda, -ikillin,
-remia, -ioa, -aia, -eyuna, -ope, -lope, -rope, -tosta, -ija.

Suffixes (Unisex):

-nea, -cea, -ruscco, -ved.

Surnames: Pair any adjective and noun, or use a male name with the patronymic ending -escu.

Magic:

In the beginning, you will be able to levitate (might fail due to reauiring a lot of power), and to telekinetically move things around, as long as they aren't too heavy. You can shoot a weak magic bolt at potential enemies, and give yourself a speed boost if needed. Of these, onyl the telekinesis and the magic bolt does not require large amounts of energy from you, as you are very untrained.

Rule 6: There is no rule six. It's badass, I like it.

Um, I'll make a character soon. Originally I didn't join because it was restricting to be 800 for the character I wanted to create, but I got over it. I'll try to create the character I originally thought up.

Ok, just asking: I didn't follow the first RP, so is the story the same? Is this a prequel or a sequel? Do you suggest to check something in the first Timestrider prophecy? Thanks alot.

I'd be interested in knowing that, too, because this does sound pretty awesome...!

Yay! Recycling my previous character, I liked him. Questions: Is our age still purely physical? Do hexfolk have facial hair?

Name: Vyrnenruhk Ruxyoll
Sex: Male
Height: 1.48 m
Age: 17
Clothes: Practical working clothes, reflecting his current hobby, usally with patterns of dark green, red and black as well as dark, brown leather boots. He currently sports a white apron over his usual attire.
Personality: Vyrnenruhk has trouble settling for one thing. He constantly juggles with multiple hobbies of various kind, be it writing songs, making clay statues or sneaking out at night and painting strange symbols on doors. His mind is always working, but fails to be particularly productive due to his thoughts jumping from one subject to the next within minutes or even seconds. Talking to him is like talking to several people at once. However, despite his uncommunicative nature, his heart is in the right spot and he is usually liked by those who can put up with his overlapping train of thought for more than a few seconds. He is terrified of pain and danger.
Looks: A messy mop of black hair covers his eyes and ears, giving him the apperance of an overly hairy puppy with pointy ears protruding from underneath. He is slim, though this isn't always visible with his choice of attire, with long fingers that always seem to be doing something, a straight, somewhat long nose and a slight underbite. His eyes are of a deep green. He never shaves, but it is more of a practical choice than an aesthetic one; shaving is just too much of a bother.

To answer everyone's questions:

Skyr, Matt: No, it's not necessary. It's basically the same RP with a face-lift, because the previous one was in need of a defibrilator fairly often.

Also, Mars: Yes, age is purely physical. And they do get facial hair, but very sparsely.

Name: Ari Farescu
Sex: Male
Height: 1 meter 30 cm
Age: 13
Clothes (Medieval-ish, not fancy): Several sizes too large black tunic and equally large black trousers with a large brown belt tying the clothes to his waist.

Short Personality: There’s a common idea among the Hexfolk that Ari is a mute, but he really only talks to those who he really gets to know well. He’s cautious and timid, and the 300 years he spent observing Olinesti has given him wise interpretations of how things work.

Long Personality:
Spoiler:
800 years ago, Ari was always seen as the cheerful child who played with his sister, Karmin, in the fields and always got into playful mischief with his partner in crime. The children were orphans who lived off of the kindness of the fellow Hexfolk of Olinesti, getting fed scraps of food from the old ladies and other kindhearted men and women of the town. When time stopped, Ari and Karmin became even closer. They were inseparable facing an issue they didn’t fully understand, the only familiarity in their lives were each other. Around three years after time stopped, a disease swept through Olinesti, taking only the young and elderly from the town. Unfortunately, Ari and Karmin were both stricken with this disease. It made both of the siblings fight for their lives, near death in comas. After a long struggle of seven years, Karmin gave in to the sickness and passed away. Ari, however, was different. The doctors couldn’t explain it, but even though the disease was destroying Ari, it wouldn’t kill the boy. Ari was just too strong. The internal battle kept the boy alive, but also kept him incarcerated in a coma for hundreds of years. Eventually, the struggle dimmed, and he became more stable. Ari was given a small section in the hospital wards just to himself, checked on daily, given medicine weekly, and all but forgotten. Since Ari didn’t have any parents to decide whether or not to ‘pull the plug’, and the head doctor in the hospital was one of the Hexfolk who fed Ari and Karmin often, he was kept alive.

Nearly five centuries passed, and Ari’s condition rarely changed. Doctors of Olinesti saw death and despair every day from a dimming population, and Ari became a project that represented the hope of the Hexfolk people in Olinesti. If Ari could be revived, then there was hope for them all.

On Ari’s 498th year in the coma, his resolve improved. The disease appeared to be dying. With increased medicinal application and attention, Ari awoke after another two years… and was never the same.

The child, at this point, had really only been conscious around 15 years in his lifetime. The world as he knew it had completely changed in 500 years. Countless that he knew had died; the people had grown from optimistic to gloomy, stuck in an eternal life. Most importantly, Karmin had died. Ari shut down from the world, rarely speaking and rarely appearing in public as he began to realize the grim reality he was stuck in. Gone now is the happy child, all that remains is the solemn, wide-eyed young boy. There’s a common idea among the Hexfolk that Ari is a mute, but he really only talks to those who he really gets to know well. He’s cautious and timid, and the 300 years he spent observing Olinesti has given him wise interpretations of how things work.
Looks (Apart from clothing): A round face and large, grey eyes, and long white hair (Think Fenris of DA2), pale skin.

I'd like to try this! This will be my first real RP, though, so if you would prefer I not join that is fine. Here is my character, just in case.

Name: Imhotep Softstone (in Egyptian Imhotep means "the one who comes in peace, is with peace")
Sex: Male
Height: 1.35m
Age: 18
Clothes : Imhotep wears a common brown robe with an attached hood. A dark blue belt with several hidden pockets wraps around his waist. He wears mocassin-like footwear made of animal hide with soles made of several layers of the same hide. He also has a pair of leather gloves that he normally stows in his belt.
Personality : Compassionate towards all and tolerant up to a ridiculous level, Imhotep rarely speaks out what he truly thinks, rather following the advice or plans of others. He is caring to a fault in that he does not like anything or anyone to suffer. He has only modest clothes because he has given away everything else of value to those who have claimed to need it. Very meek, he has taken on the life of a psuedo-monk, not ever having enough courage to join the ranks of those in the temple. He is frequently the brunt of jokes, but takes it in stride, laughing at himself rather than getting upset.
Looks : Silvery-white hair that is pulled into a long ponytail that reaches his shoulder blades. Dull purple eyes that always seem sad. He is of a modest height and build, not very atheletic, but not obese either. He has what has been called a "baby face".

Name: Arka Karheelm
Sex: F
Height: 134cm
Weight : 37kg
Age: 15
Clothes: A blouse coloured in green and russet orange, a green skirt that goes just past her knees, and dull, autumnal orange leggings. Black shoes.
Personality: Rather quiet, although among the Hexenfolken that is hardly an uncommon personality trait. She tries her hardest to bring happiness and joy to herself and her friends, but every overture she makes is tainted by the collapsed, dying civilization she is surrounded by. She has little hope, and she makes every effort to keep from thinking of the future. The present is bad, but the future will always be worse, it seems to her, and so she has experienced.
Looks : Pretty, if unremarkable. Quite pale, with shoulder-length silver hair she likes to keep braided. Determined, dull and rather large crimson eyes.

EDIT: I used my old last name, is that okay? I like Karheelm...

Name: Arkhensiss Salles
Sex: Male
Height: 1m 80cm
Age: 14
Clothes (Medieval-ish, not fancy): Sack clothes, deer hide trousers and leather boots
Personality (Be detailed. You have known each other for 800 years, so you are supposed to be able to know each other well): Ahkensiss is quite smart but modest. He loves history and is fascinated by it, whether it is the tales of ancient battles or of castles and courts. Despite his intellect, he is quite dim, bordering on being socially awkward. Why indeed! Approved.
Because there's no fun to be found in being normal.

Name: Xarentein Urmirescu
Sex: male
Height: 1.50
Age: 17
Clothes (Medieval-ish, not fancy): he wears leather short boots, pants (in shades of brown or grey), a shirt (colorful if in town, otherwise dark) and a vest (leather or fur); he often carries gloves and sometimes a black hood attached to the shirt.
Personality (Be detailed. You have known each other for 800 years, so you are supposed to be able to know each other well): Xarentein likes statying outside, sometimes hunting (he only has a bow and a knife), but when the weather forces him to stay inside, he either reads or does some wood-carving (he's still learning). He always thinks before acting, and he's ready to help his friends.
Looks (Apart from clothing): deep blue eyes, 25cm ears, black straigh hair, he keeps them shoulder-length.

Edit: Long personality
Spoiler:
Xarentein never really knew his mother; as she was a healer and travelled a lot. So it was his father Urmir who brought him up, passing on his love for wilderness to him. After time stopped, his mother kept travelling, and in 3265 she was in another town, when the humans attacked, and he never saw her again.
His father was a hunter, and when Xarentein was ten he first went hunting with him. At the age of 15 his father crafted a bow for Xarentein, which he still keeps at home in a chest. His father died in 3580: during a hunt an enormous bear attacked him, and he got back to Olinesti severely injuried; unfortunately, he couldn't be cured and died the day after. It was a terrible blow for Xarentein, and for a month or so he spoke with no-one. Then he recovered, but he is still a bit of a loner; it's hard to become friends with him, but once you have he'll be ready to help you whenever you need. He doesn't talk much, preferring listening and watching, and he always thinks before acting. You'll hardly see him smile anyway; and he's considered a bit stand-offish.
Xarentein likes statying outside, sometimes hunting (he only has a bow and a knife), sometimes just wandering around; when the weather forces him to stay inside, he either reads or does some wood-carving (he's still learning).
