It’s not that difficult, actually. I only know by memory the ones that I use the most, like the quotation marks. For the vowels, since I know that they are all located between Alt + 0224 and Alt + 0255, are in alphabetical order, and there are usually five to eight accented forms for each, I just make an educated guess. The “i”s are all in the higher Alt + 023Xs, so I type a code in that range, and if it’s wrong, I can quickly figure out what the correct code is. The accents always follow this order: grave, acute, circumflex, umlaut, with other characters added in as needed. The “a” series is, therefore, “à, á, â, ã, ä, å, æ,” numbering 0224 to 0230. It isn’t nearly as complicated as it sounds when I try to describe it, either. Once you are used to it, it flows by second nature, just like ordinary typing. ;) Really, it does. :)

weka wrote:I presume by "here" you mean the UK? That's also where I live and I've pretty much never heard it called the King's English (I think once I have). As far as I know, like all other things that reference the monarch like that, it does change as the gender (which is the word I think you're looking for to avoid the censor filters) of the currently reigning monarch changes.
No, by “here”, I actually mean Canada. Sorry, I should have made that clear.

But I have heard the term “king’s English” used by British folk, as well, during the current reign. As an example, the song “Straight to Hell” by the Clash, which contains the lyric:
  • “Speak the king’s English
    In quotation
    At railhead towns
    The steel mills rust”
So at least Joe Strummer used the expression in a generic, masculine form. >shrug<

As to “séx” vs. “gender”, I tend to use the former to delineate simply female and male individuals, while I use “gender” in reference to either sëxual identity or in it’s original linguistic sense, referring to gender in language, such as some languages assign to all nouns, for example.

Btw, I really laughed when I read “it does change as the gender ... of the currently reigning monarch changes”. Sorry, but it gave me the mental image of the current monarch changing her sèx/gender, as opposed to the sëx of the monarch being different, when the crown passes to a new monarch.

Some of the word filters were set up long before Daveh implemented the 7 days 10 posts rule, as an attempt to slow down the spammers with their flesh peddling. Maybe it is time to take a look at what is actually on the list, though the use of that particular word doesn't really come up all that often, and I would hate to see it used in it's other context.

|♖|♘|♗|♔|♕|♗|♘|♖|
|♙|♙|♙|♙|♙|♙|♙|♙|
|_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |
|_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |
|_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |_ |

|♟|♟|♟|♟|♟|♟|♟|♟|
|♜|♞|♝|♚|♛|♝|♞|♜|

ಠ_ಠ

etc.

or you could just use the ctrl+c and ctrl+v codes as I do.

ragged-gothic wrote:I was wondering if it would be possible for someone to add a custom dictionary to the UESPwiki forum, so that when composing messages, Elder Scrolls and Tamriel terms (at least the common ones) are not recognized as spelling errors? It would be very helpful in composing clear, cogent posts. I suspect that some people let proofreading for real errors slide because the message composer continually sees Redguard, Weynon, Dagoth, Cyrodil (or is that Cyrodiil ), etc. as errors. Thanks. :)
i think that this would be a good idea.

If you're going to bump up a post from over a month ago, the least you could do is bother to read 3 posts down, where this is answered:

But anyway, welcome to the UESP. :D
