The Frigates were defeated. There was a pause. Then, two Dreadnoughts, a Cruiser and five Destroyers, escorted by a swarm of skiffs, streaked in. The Somme was immediately engaged, as was teh Thermopalyea.

The Thermopylae's MAW unleashed a kinetic round, aimed at the single Cruiser. The two Jovian cruisers as well as both corvettes flanked it as it advanced towards the two enemy Dreadnoughts.

The nine Tribal Destroyers likewise charged forward, each one directly engaging another Destroyer. They were easily superior in quality to the makeshift Pirate vessels. The remaining four Jovian Destroyers moved ahead of the Thermopylae towards the enemy Dreadnoughts, staying far out of the arcs of their accelerators. They swiftly moved to the sterns of the enemy vessels, engaging the engines.

The bombers, escorted man-for-man by fighters, began to make runs on the destroyers. Interceptors shielded the carrier, and the remaining fighters individually targeted the skiffs.

The Somme fired its KEC at one of the Dreadnoughts, disabling it.

"My shilds are down! Cover me for five minutes."

The other capital ships formed around the Somme, protecting it from harm. The Dreadnought sent out fighters to deal with the ships behind it.

The Thermopylae came between the two enemy Dreadnoughts, giving a full, massive broadside barrage to each ship. One of the enemy ships was almost immediately disabled by the Somme, and the constant barrage of artillery and heavy lasers from the Dreadnought turned the once-fine, sharp lines of the vessel into slag. Molten metal blasted through the abyss as thousands of bolts left the Thermopylae, receiving no resistance from shields. The enemy ship was destroyed in almost every sense of the word.

On the other side, things went less smoothly. The two ships released an endless barrage of fire upon each other, filling the space between the ships with an almost unbelievable maw of red and green laser bolts, the streaks of artillery, the crackling staccato pops of autocannons, and the golden and blue streaks of torpedoes and missiles screaming towards their targets. Ten metres in front of the hulls of the ships, there was a constant, brilliant fireworks show as the various projectiles impacted against the shields. Pulsating blue lines highlighted the hexagonal shielding panels as impacts stretched them to their limits. Yet, here too the Thermopylae was giving better than it received. Gaps were beginning to appear in the shields of the enemy Dreadnought, some exceedingly small, and some stretching more than a hundred meters. Explosions were beginning to tear the enemy dreadnought apart.

The two Jovian cruisers quickly moved their ships to defend any gaps that appeared in the Thermopylae's shields as they were repaired.

Towards the back of the battlefield, a new ship appeared. It was long, if not large, almost six hundred meters of raw industrial metal.

On the bridge of the Thermopylae, an ensign pointed. "Sir!" He called.

The captain looked up.

"Sir, it's a mining laser!"

That was among the last words spoken by anyone on the Thermopylae. The long, narrow ship suddenly pulsated orange, and a massive, hellish beam of yellow orange concentrated energy poured onto the Thermopylae's top bow shields. The shields held for three seconds, before they imploded in a violet mushroom. The laser bored through deck after deck, incinerating entire levels as the very air the crew breathed was turned into an inferno of flame. The most awful luck conspired against the Thermopylae, as the laser finally reached the core of the MAW. The fuel rods of the nuclear generator almost immediately fused.

The massive vessel was blown in half by the nuclear explosion, small by nuclear standards by still more than enough to massacre the once-fine ship. More subsidiary explosions sounded as ammunition batteries, atmosphere tanks and the fuel exploded.

Hundreds of shuttles and pods streaked away from the reck, the small fraction of the survivors. They moved as fast as they could to the safety of the Cruisers.

The Somme was hit by the explosion and pushed to the left by a few kilometres. "Thermopylae! Do you read me?" Shouted Barb. The only reply was static. The Admiral appeared on every tele-screen on the ship. "Fire up the engines and repair the shields, we're getting revenge."

The Somme, despite its vastness, was speedy and glided over the Mining Laser, firing its underside cannons. The Frigates and Corvettes, along with the Destroyers, speeded to fill the gap that the destruction of the ship had caused.

The laser fired again, although it's aim was faulty. The great, wide beam struck the underside of the Somme at an oblique angle, ricocheting off the shields. The Somme's shields overloaded, but they did their job and protected the ship.

The ricocheted beam slammed into a Kuiper Destroyer. (RP the destruction, POMC.)

The barrage of fire that the Somme unleashed on the Mining Laser destroyed it almost immediately... It wasn't armoured or shielded.

The laser hit the Destroyer in the engines. They overloaded and began to explode. The fuel tanks also began to do the same and soon the ship was on fire. The inferno reached the ammunition dump and a huge explosion broke the ship in two. The Somme continued its attack. The remaining pirates began targeting the Somme, its shields at 60%.

One of the enemy Dreadnoughts was totally destroyed, and the other one was significantly damaged from it's battle with the Thermopylae. It was alongside the damaged Somme, exchanging broadside barrages with the Kuiper ship. The somme was aided by three Jovian Destroyers.

The one Pirate cruiser had been disabled by the Thermopylae's MAW, and was engaging the two remaining Jovian Cruisers... Altogether unsuccessfully. It was immobile, it's shields were down, and lashes of laser fire swept over the exposed surface of the ship, causing untold damage.

The five Pirate destroyers were still engaged in ship-to-ship duels with five opposing Jovian Destroyers. The Jovian Tribal-II was the best Destroyer in existence, and they were making quick work of the opposing Destroyers.

Most of the enemy Skiffs had been destroyed by joint action by the Jovian and Kuiper fighters, and those that remained were being quickly rounded up and annihilated.

Truly, without reinforcements, the Pirates were well and truly f*cked.

A pirate frigate hit the Somme in its one weak spot. Suddenly, the circuits were switched off and then surged with power. As a result, the shields, weapons and engines were down. Only the communication and life support systems were left running, powered by a generator.

Two of the pirate Destroyers were destroyed, managing to take down one Jovian ship with them. The pirate cruiser was trailing metal pieces and fire. It fired its lasers at the Jovian ships.

The Pirate cruiser continued to be savaged by the two ships that hemmed it in, as bombers began to make runs on the bridge, dropping powerful Ion charges. In a blue flash, a massive wave of electricity shot through the Bridge's circuits, overloading nearly everything it came into contact with. Every single monitor exploded in a shower of glass and sparks. The ship was basically without any way of coordinating it's efforts. It's individual gun ports were targeted, leaving the ship an unarmed, headless monstrosity looming in space.

Blue tractor beams stretched to the ship from one of the Jovian cruisers, pulling it away from the battlefield for retrofitting.

The remaining Cruiser Apollo joined the Destroyers.

Four Jovian ships menaced three smaller Pirate vessels, causing incalculable damage. The one Jovian ship that had been lost, the Cossack, had had a serious shield collapse, and had taken major damage to it's starboard amidships. It accompanied the Jovian Cruiser Athena in exiting the battlefield with the crippled enemy vessel.

The four Jovian Destroyers, matched with the Cruiser Apollo, made quick work of the outnumbered and hopelessly outnumbered Pirates.

One of the Destroyers defending the Some began to make repairs, as the other two guarded the Somme from any further aggressive frigates.
