Scariest books ever?
So recently i heard of these two books 'The Magic' and 'The Dare'. Apparently the first is the scariest book you will ever read. It only works once and most people cannot even finish it. It's only two pages long...I was wondering if anyone has read these books and can tell me if they are worth reading?

The books are basically directly trying to get you paranoid. Telling you to fo things that make your presumptions run wild, making you extremely paranoid.

They're dumb creepypastas that some kids have been trying to force-meme via web spamming for a couple years now. Nothing worth bothering with, sadly.BOETHIABADMAN wrote:So recently i heard of these two books 'The Magic' and 'The Dare'. Apparently the first is the scariest book you will ever read. Now if you want a book that'll really ruin your week (and you don't, believe me) it doesn't get much worse than this. Personally, though, I'd recommend you give Lovecraft a try, if you haven't yet. He's a bit corny, true, but the same can be said for ANY "scary" book writers... and you have to admit, he's got a really cool style.

*Stine. I thought his books were funny.
Now, Lovecraft and some of Stephen Kings stories is a whole different level.

Guillermo Del Toro's "The Strain" trilogy is pretty creepy, and a really great read IMO.

I've only read King's short stories. They seemed more intriguing than frightening.

The book that has historicallly had the most amazing record scaring people into changing their behaviour has been the Bible. The early chapters can be especially chilling at times.
Look at Dervenin in SI. Look at him in Skyrim. Say no to drugs.

House of Leaves is probably the scariest book I've read.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

And miles to go before I sleep,

Yeah, I've never really found King to be that frightening. He's certainly a good author, and a must-read if you're into that kind of thing, but he's more of a "huh, blood in an elevator, that's interesting" kind of guy than a "ohgodiwillneversleepagain" thing.Eltee wrote:I've only read King's short stories. I would read the Stephen King novel if I were you. I've read Cell and am reading IT. Cell was one of the best books I've read.

Funny you mention Lovecraft, I plan on collecting the entire Cthulhu mythos shortly. I think it also includes, "The Hounds of Tindalos". Which I heard is pretty good as well.DorostheConqueror wrote:They're dumb creepypastas that some kids have been trying to force-meme via web spamming for a couple years now. Both the books "It" and "Misery" by Stephen King are terrifying. I didn't find The Shining scary, just somewhat creepy.

Re: Scariest books ever?
"It" scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and it still does today (I've re-read it a few months ago). It's huge, but sooooo worth it.
Lovecraft can be brilliant, but his dialogues will make you cringe - not because they're scary, but because they're awful.
I've read "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons a while ago and yes, it's SF, but some parts, especially the Priest's Tale and pretty much everything about the Shrike, can be genuinely scary. And the book is awesome.
