Read the books. Experience greatness.

I honestly can't pick a favourite Tolkien character. But Farmer Giles is definetely the most compelling of all.

I am a big fan of his, and almost all his works, except The Legend of Sigur and Gudrun. Norse mythology is exceptionally dull for me.

Also, this.

I agree that this topic doesn't belong in Multimedia, unless other mythopoetic writing is considered multimedia

In between the lines there's a lot of obscurity.

Fell asleep listening to Rob Inglis narrate the unabridged LoTR - just started a new read/listen through, and Bilbo just had his long-expected party :D

I have The Hobbit (with dragon-skin textured), The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, and the Children of Hurin in somewhat-matching deluxe editions. I'm thinking about ordering Tales from the Perilous Realm in deluxe, too.

So... How many of you have read the Children of Húrin? What were your thoughts on it? I think it might be my favourite Tolkien book.

My favorite character, while cliche, is Sam Gamgee. Nothing beats his undying loyalty. But yeah, I've read the Hobbit, LotR, and the Silmarillion.

Certainly the most tragic story Tolkien has ever told. I'm a sucker for tragedy.

I love reading about the beginning days I think my favorite mental image is Orome atop Nahar first discovering the awakening of the Firstborn. Aule is also another favorite Vala of mine. When I read the Silmarillion I think wow....compared to what Melkor did Sauron was small stuff I mean don't get me wrong world domination is pretty heavy but Melkor man...

I wasn't a fan of Turin in The Silmarillion's Of Turin Turambar but I did enjoy The Children of Hurin, especially when he returns to Dor-lomin. In general though the guy has both a bad attitude and and tendency to accidentally kill people

I am resurrecting this thread with the permission of Mlle. Musicman.

So, continuing from out debate in the GD thread, what do you think about the state of Gondor? Was it strong? Was it weak? Were its soldiers brave for being able to hold out against the enemy for so long, despite being weakened by centuries of war, weak rule and misrule, disease, famine?

I assume you mean at the end of the Third Age?

Well certainly it's not regarded as glorious as it once was when the men/blood of Numenor was stronger in their ranks, but they did have some greatness left. Faramir in particular was a wise and intelligent leader, and the lighting of the beacons of Gondor showed that they still had some wisdom from their former days. They did indeed hold, persist and survive while under the fear of the nearby enemy

I agree, a strong people

Gondor's decline (as embodied in the state of the white tree which was only renewed when Aragorn returned) was due largely to the lack of a strong leadership - the stewards spent their time building a city of crypts instead of fortifying the boundaries with Mordor, for instance so when the hammer fell, Osgiliath fell quickly (tho it wouldnt have held forever in the face of what Mordor threw at it)

they messed with Faramir quite significantly in the movies tho - i loved the back story with Boromir and Faramir but not so much his dealings with Frodo and with Denethor (lol read the books, people)
