Alduin or Mehrunes Dagon

Post by bepease2293 »

I know I left out other major villains from the ES series, but I was wondering which of the two everyone likes better. So who do you like better Alduin ir Mehrunes Dagon?

I'm not quite sure what you mean exactly, but of the two, I have to say I prefer Dagoth Ur and Jagar Tharn as villains :P for their complexity and relative moral neutrality. In all seriousness though, of the two Alduin and Mehrunes are not as interesting as villains, but Alduin is more interesting in terms of what he represents about the Nordic view of time as cyclical as opposed to linear. He's not so much evil as the giver of rebirth in a way.

If they are fighting, considering mehrunes dagon already got defeated by a dragon I'm voting on Alduin.

As a villain alduin is more interesting, that said dagoth ur seems cooler to me since he had that whole im-not-really-a-god-but-lets-pretend air about him.....

Read these. I love how Dagon is portrayed.

^ Note - may or may not be canonical accounts of Nord folk beliefs, but some things like Snow Whales and Swirled Cows were referenced in Skyrim.

Dagoth Ur :p.
Oh fine I think Alduin is a more effective villian. It felt like Mankar Camoran was the main villian in IV anyway, his ultimate goal being to help Dagon enter Nirn.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

Yeah I kinda have to agree, Mankar seemed like a more effective villain than Dagon in Oblivion. Dagon in Oblivion is portrayed as less of a dimensional character and more of an embodiment of destructive force, in my eyes.

I get the feeling both Tharn and Mankar were using him as a convenient weapon to serve their own agendas. He's just lustful, petty and vindictive enough to be manipulated by very willful mortals. While he could easily crush a being like Mankar, he instead allows him his own Oblivion realm and a station nearly equal to his own.

Alduin, on the other hand, shows a streak of independence. He ignored his duties as World Eater and instigated a reign of terror, even taking the throne and title of Akatosh for himself from his father who can not physically interfere. Also, in Mundus, the et'Ada have a clear advantage in single combat. Alduin would demolish Dagon as easily as Akatosh did at the end of Oblivion, or even more so since unlike his dad he needs to be hit by Dragonrend to even physically damage, and Dagon knows not the Thu'um.

Indeed.
Mankar Camoran was the REAL antagonist of Oblivion. There's no denial. Dagon was used, he knew and he didn't cared.

Mehrunes Dagon he is pure evil plus Alduin is a false god so he no where near as powerful as Dagon.

That is open to interpretation. Alduin has/had the power to annihilate the entire world and that is comparable if not equal to Dagon's power.

Dagon's body was destroyed at the hands of Akatosh - very easily. Alduin is nearly on Akatosh's level of attack, but more importantly he can not by harmed without Dragonrend. That's the critical piece of info. Dagon can't be harmed by a mortal without knowledge of his secret "true" name and a weapon forged with god's blood. This was established in Battlespire. Akatosh could hurt him because he was a god. Alduin is a god. He's only a "false" god in that he usurped his father's throne. That doesn't mean he's not an actual god though. He is. Talos stole his throne from Shor but he's still a god regardless. That's just how these things work in TES. In just about any setting imaginable, Dagon can't hold a candle to Alduin.

Where at all is it said Aduin is at his level?
Also Aduins younger brother says they are NOT God's, and I dont think they really are his offsrpinge, Akatosh made all dragons, and as such they are his "kids" but they are not God's.
And while not 100% sure on this, i dont recall anywhere it says its the only way to hurt him, in fact IIRC not being able to hurt without it is a gltich.

Alduin was the first made by Akatosh. If you can't accept that Alduin is a God then at least accept that he is a Demi-God. He's not like the other dragons, he's different.

This is only game mechanics... In lore there's only specific weapons that can hurt ethereal beings...

In gameplay that would be annoying so they allow the player to choose whatever they want to finish the enemies. Apart from ghosts and wraiths, that is.

In what way? he is the strongest, as near as I can tell thats what makes him different. But being the strongest of something dont make you a God, or even a demi-God, he is a powerful dragon, like if we had a very powerful mage.

I've seen nothing to claim he truely is a God, and evreything that says he made that to rule over the world.

He was made the same way the others where but Akatosh made him first, and Akatosh gave him a specific job.

so he is defreint in a way that a king in the old days would raise their firborn to do things (not saying Aduin will take over for him just that he gets birhtrights)
But then again it depends how you define Gods, if its by being worshiped then I dont think he is ( as there is nothing about anyone worshiping him) but you coul;d agure its power, in which case that is way to deep for me to get in to here.

Can you be sure its not intended to show that he is just a dragon i'll be it a very powerful one like Path said?

I've seen nothing to say he is a God, a servent servent of one sure but not a God.

The Dragonborn evidently cannot claim Alduin's soul. This alone makes him vastly different from other dragons.

It is hinted that it was not cause of Aduin but Akatosh?

I love Dagon's line in the last one, to Morihaus:

"YOU ARE NOTHING TO ME, MORIHAUS HALF-SPIRIT! THE DAGON FIGHTS NOT THE SONS OF HEAVEN'S CONCUBINES BUT HEAVEN'S KING ITSELF."

I dislike both incarnations of Alduin and Mehrunes Dagon in the TES games.
However, I appreciate Kirkbride's depiction of them both, Dagon being my favourite there.
Why? because of what he says in Fight Four "The Tenpenny Winter... Again" - “I am no salmon!”
