Re: Maryland to allow same-sex Marriage
I know i've said this before but an arguement that same sex marriages shouldn't be allowed because it is a religious ceremony is stupid. For one thing that is excluding the irreligious and the religious. Many religions are fine with same-sex relationships so not letting them get married is pretty much saying "My religion is bigger so is more important and right then your one. People of my religion should get to do what they want but not people of yours."
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

Re: Maryland to allow same-sex Marriage
Hey now, Maryland is perfectly civilized. After all, we are known for crab cakes and football. America also has us to thank for our national anthem, written by a native Marylander in Maryland during a battle in Maryland. Also, guess where the first telegraph line in the world was established? Yeah, Maryland rules!Eltee wrote:Back to the original point: Congratulations, Maryland. Be Merryland. Congrats on catching up with the civilized world.

Of course, Maryland rocks! No doubt about it. It just rocks more now.
Rape, incest and infanticide all have a victim, be it the rape victim, the killed infant or the inbred decedents. Homosexuality has no victim.

Re: Maryland to allow same-sex Marriage
Now that we have that cleared up, let me make one thing clear.
No one is saying you have to agree with any of the issues discussed on this forum, in real life, amongst your friends, in the news, and so on and so forth. However, that does not mean you can go ahead and slander, post rude things, and mock the discussion. Not only is it ridiculously immature, it is insulting - mostly to yourself, but also to others. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all...or I will find it, and I will give you a warning or a temp ban.
You choose to participate in these discussions. Do not abuse it, or the moderator team will not allow them. Furthermore, if a moderator suggests you behave one way, I suggest you listen. If you do not agree, PM us or the moderator and say why. We respect you; there is no reason you cannot respect us.
Thank you. Now carry on in a civilized manner.

See, this is one of my issues with the whole debate: why is tolerance of homosexuality "smart", and objection to it, by definition, "stupid"? Since when are opinions wrong?cardbird wrote:I think this is a good thing,it shows the world is a bit smarter than it was yesterday

I gotta be honest, this is a legitimate argument.
I notice that anyone who may have any objection with same-sex marriage, or homosexuals, in any way, shape or form, be it a small or large gripe, can get bashed pretty hard. I have absolutely no problem with anyone's preference. I have my own that I dont want questioned so I do my best to not question anyone elses. But any sort of opposite feedback is not handled very well. Why might this be?

Re: Maryland to allow same-sex Marriage
I am leaving them alone. I'm not an activist, I don't judge people on their sexuality, and I would never disparage or insult anyone for it. I'm just not sure about gay marriage. If I choose to believe something, even in private, why is it an issue? Why MUST I change my mind just because someone tells me to?cardbird wrote:If someone isn't "hurting" you in anyway leave them alone. What are your reasons for being againist gay rights?
EDIT: And what if I don't think marriage is a universal right that should be open to all peoples regardless of belief or relationship structure? Why is THAT wrong, especially if I don't force it on others?

The same way it's "smart" to let women vote, to let blacks own land, and to separate church and state.Jedi Taters wrote: See, this is one of my issues with the whole debate: why is tolerance of homosexuality "smart", and objection to it, by definition, "stupid"? Since when are opinions wrong?

Re: Maryland to allow same-sex Marriage
If I might take off on a tangent for just a mo', the whole "separation of church and state" is based on misunderstanding. The original use of the term was by Thomas Jefferson in a letter he wrote to a congregation(somewhere), in which he was attempting to assure them that no national religion would be established. NOT that no religion would ever enter into state business by some means.Arch-Mage Matt wrote:The same way it's "smart" to let women vote, to let blacks own land, and to separate church and state.Jedi Taters wrote: See, this is one of my issues with the whole debate: why is tolerance of homosexuality "smart", and objection to it, by definition, "stupid"? Regardless, separating state and church is a smart thing to do.

Re: Maryland to allow same-sex Marriage
I have my own theory on how you "become" gay, but since your back on topic, did you know, that Florida might allow gay marriage because of a certain sate agreed to this?
I'm not going to pick sides on this agruement, because of being a christen, I tend to disapprove, but at the same time, I fully understand what it must be like, so for me, I'm a meh.

Re: Maryland to allow same-sex Marriage
Taters has a legitimate point of view. You are entitled to your beliefs if you do not infringe upon the rights and liberties of anyone else, which he says he is not. Unfortunately, that's where points of view like his also get in the way. If your point of view is not allowing someone else to live to theirs, then there is a problem.
Here in the United States, we have the right as individuals to "the pursuit of happiness." It does not say what that happiness is, and for a good reason: it varies according to the individual. It's when individual A believes that, just because he believes it, he must stop individual B from doing it, that the idea gets controversial.
(Of course, you have extremists, so you can say the above should be used to stop them. But I'm not talking about that; that is absolutely outside of this argument.)
I was discussing this with my significant other, who is a right-leaning libertarian. He was saying gay couples can marry if they want - he doesn't care, as marriage is really more of a financial thing anyhow (that's where it came from, not religion; it was an investment financially and in property) - but he doesn't believe they should be allowed to adopt children. I asked him why, and he said he doesn't believe it's in the child's best being, that you learn different things from both the biological sexes (and, in a heterosexual relationship, the traditional gender roles they assign themselves to) and it's more beneficial for a child to have both a mother and a father. He said if statistics proved otherwise, then facts are facts and that's that, he would say it was okay. I asked him if he thought they had statistics on women voting or interracial marriages, both which were controversial and against the law back in the day but are now very commonplace. He said he didn't know, and that was a legitimate statement. So, while he is entitled to his opinion, I pointed out to him that his opinion is a problem if it infringes on someone else's rights as individuals, and that's where it becomes offensive. We ended it there - but the same logic applies here.
The thing is, everyone has a right to what they believe to be true. We shouldn't let those beliefs infringe on those of others, however...to an extent. What is the extent? I don't really know.

How? Actually, no, I get it. When homosexual people get married they become super robots and enslave everyone and force everyone to have gay buttlove. Obviously.
