Re: Dark Elfs or Dunmers...
I guess the environment was cold and such for them, so the resistance dropped. It's mostly about the surrounding environment, and the Dunmer had more resistance when they were more exposed to the ashes, and such, but in Skyrim, it's cold. Unlike Cyrodiil and Morrowind.

Decreased resistance is the price you pay when the people of your race can now speak while using more than one kind of voice.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.
Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

It's a gameplay change not a Lore one, although attempts to rationalise it might be made, Beth wont though, just as they haven't rationalised the Redguards' sudden affinity for Magic or the Imperials' loss of their silver tongues.

Many races lost their previous traits. The Breton, for example, they have only 25% of magic resistance in Skyrim. In Oblivion they had 50%.

I always thought the reason they reduced the fire resistance was for two reasons
- To bring it inline with the Nord's Frost resistance
- Dragons using fire breath, which would give Dunmer a strong edge against early level Dragon fights
Re: Dark Elfs or Dunmers...
It is Dunmer, not Dunmers! Anyway...

Later Dragons use Frost and other forms of attack though, and one could argue that a Dragon's fire shout is similar to the number of Fire wielding Daedra in Oblivion, which made it very easy for Dunmer to waltz around the Badlands without fear of harm around level 10, when Flame Atronachs and Scamps were the main opponent.

- That's why it's inline with the Nord's resistance
- Oblivion's racials were wonky, Bretons with 50% magic resist and +50 to magicka alongside Khajiit with...stuff. Skyrim at least tries to give each race something interesting or situational

It's Dunmer, not Dunmers, for that matter.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

I can't be stated enough, truly.
