What in your opinion is more immersive?
I was wondering who liked morrowind more than oblivion...
I always liked Morrowind better because i've had the game 2 yrs and i STILL haven't finished all the quests... but in Oblivion, I've played it throgh ten times and I know what to do and how to take advantage of NPCs and stuff... I just wish I could FORGET how to play both games and I could do it over again... that would be awesome...

I wholeheartedly agree with you there. I frequently find myself thinking exactly that.Shadowsforu wrote:I just wish I could FORGET how to play
It's hard for me to vote. I played Oblivion first, which probably gives me a somewhat bias point of view on the matter. It was difficult for me to get into Morrowind because of certain gameplay issues (ie: fighting..) and, in general, I find it difficult to "go backwards" in games like that.
I definately, from my limited playtime in Morrowind, think it has a LOT of things that are better. I like the major/minor skill system better, the storyline, the sheer size of the world (despite the fact that Cyrodiil is supposed to be bigger), etc. I'd say Oblivion has some strong points too, so honestly, it's a toss up. I do, however, enjoy playing Oblivion much more.

Morrowind, easily.
More varied world; multi-layered clothing giving an almost completely infinite visual palette (currently packing Wraithguard & a Her Hands gauntlet, couldn't do anything like that in Oblivion); one of the most intelligent central stories of any game; better script thanks to the text, instead of the awful clunking voice-artists; far, far more stuff to do with its Houses and factions that don't just stick to Oblivion's banal, dumbed down Fighter/Thief/Mage approach.
Vvardenfell had genuine beauty; when you see Ald Ruhn's brace of front guard towers, with its lonely Stilt Strider silhouetted against a deep, dusk sky? That's immersion, and it has an ethereal, otherworldly quality to it that Oblivion's characterless trad-European stylings could never get close to.
Then you've got Mournhold, Solstheim, those immaculately designed little fishing villages, and the genuinely unsettling nature of the Sixth House caverns. And the Harrowing of Kogoruhn, one of my favourite locations in either game - to see those ruins looming towards you out of the ashlands, was a great moment.
In Morrowind, you feel genuinely connected to the politics (the Duke's wayward brother; the Temple & Imperial Cult), the rivalries (Hlaalu & Redoran's mining clashes), and the sheer mythos of the very land itself (Vivec, Nerevar, Almalexia, Sotha Sil, and Dagoth Ur - and what exactly happened on Red Mountain, and the profane Dwemer). Themes of religion, persecution, redemption, power, imperialism, racism...
...then there's the greater skill sets, and having the choice between Light, Medium and Heavy Armour, or Unarmoured - or, best of all, a mix of the whole lot. Why they took all this away for Oblivion, is one of the biggest mysteries/disappointments.
Role-play? Morrowind.
Hack-n-slash-play? Oblivion..

Morrowind had a lot more things to do to allow me to play a character the way I wanted. However I never really found myself "lost in the game" as I have in Oblivion. (But that may just be because of with Morrowind I am hunched over my laptop and with Oblivion I just have a controller and the game on my TV.)

To be fair to the airhead that is Oblivion, my all-time favourite looking weapon in either game has to be either the Ebony claymore (or maybe the Elven claymore - proper 'hero' swords), or the daedric Ebony blade. I miss my Nordic great-axe tho, seeing as none of the axes in Ob suit my most recent role-play requirements.
But if anyone could come up with anything resembling this axe in Oblivion, I'd give them a round of applause. Then money so that I could have it..
