As for gays, I'll admit I sometimes get a little uncomfortable around them, but I can talk to them a bit. (After all there is one on my team at work...)

You guys are talking as if 'gay' is a personality type.
Anyway, can we get a few more women in here? That poll was meant to be anonymous but I think the lack of XX's has made it obvious which one I voted for.

None of the options seemed really applicable, the last one's plain silly.

Well, as I've already stated, I apologise for not including every sexual preference known to man.

It's like the gender options, stick an "other" there and bam! you've got them covered.

Look, I'm not resetting the poll now. If you have a problem with it, tough on you. Just state what you would vote for if you had your own poll and move on.

Re: Sexuality
I'm slightly irritated in the way people refer to "gays" as a different type of person. Hell. They are the same, as you and I, same body type, same pieces parts...why should we reference them as "different" or not the same?
People with different sexual preferences are the same as everyone..and don't deserve ANY special treatment, good or bad. We're all the same, and we should all be treated EQUAL. No special rights or "exclusions" for anyone.
For instance: I posted the pledge of Allegiance on my wall on FB a long while back when my other half was deployed. I admit, i'm slightly biased towards it and a whole lot patriotic. On the end of it, I quipped "if you have a problem with the Pledge, delete me.." or some effect. I actually had a friend leave a nasty comment saying "I don't believe in the Pledge because it doesn't include LGBT in it!"
...
*eye twitch* It doesn't include or exclude anyone. It doesn't point out to a specific group..and it irks me that we need to change something that has no reflection towards people who tend to be gay...just to include them.
*steps off soapbox* grr.

Re: Sexuality
It's no secret that the current mainstream narrative of the so-called "culture wars" between "gays" and their "discontents" is dominated by the language of self-proclaimed "progressives". This narrative is most often predicated on the idea that "gays" are a distinct, easily categorizable group, a "victim class" separate from the rest of society, with a homogenous (harhar) goal that can be neatly advanced by the philosopher-king activists within "the group's" progressive vanguard.Dovahkiness wrote:I'm slightly irritated in the way people refer to "gays" as a different type of person.
It's impossible NOT to view "gays" as somehow different when even their "champions" see everything as identity politics!
Now, don't get me wrong, I agree with you in principle that we should all have "equal" treatment, or at least that sexual preference alone should not be grounds for "special rights or exclusions". But this is an idea that queer theorists hate just as much as any phantom homophobe reactionary might do, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Re: Sexuality
I'm option #1, guy likes girl.
I'm not against what anyone wants to be, it's their choice and I'm good with it.
I've know plenty of friends that are gay, doesn't mean that I am one or I should be afraid of them.

I'm stunned that there are many times more guys who like both genders than homosexuals. Normally homosexuals outnumber bisexuals many times over.

Re: Sexuality
Not really, if you look at the Kinsey's research into bisexuality it would seem that it is more common than most people think. Then again people seem to confuse "more common" and "everyone one in the world is really bi."

Re: Sexuality
Sexuality is not a choice. Most people are not just "straight" or "gay", but are a mixture of both. Everyone has certain characteristics that they like in a person, whether that person is a man or a woman. I consider myself straight, though I have questioned it in the past.

Re: Sexuality
Well, you know, the women are a little underrepresented here, so you'll just have to settle with it for now. But I'll throw my vote in.Veck wrote:Anyway, can we get a few more women in here? That poll was meant to be anonymous but I think the lack of XX's has made it obvious which one I voted for.
To answer a previous question - or rather, questions - about why this topic is here, I think it is just for the sake of discussion. It is a big world and there are many different ways to live in it, none necessarily more right than the other. The fact is that you'll run into views that are different from yours, just as you'll run into views that are like yours, and it oughtn't really be a big deal. Discussion, recognition, and perhaps even a little, light debate about it is healthy. What's the harm in seeing how other people think and look at their world, eh? The real shame is that we are so quick to divide people into categories, as if all of humanity can be easily put into labeled shoe boxes on a shelf. That whole idea has always been odd to me.
But that's sort of off topic. What is on topic: I'm not really about flaunting how I feel, I'm what you call heterosexual. I joke around about a few of my likes, but the fact of the matter is it's something that is private to me and I prefer to keep it that way. My brain chemicals are my brain chemicals, and that's all there is to it. Public displays of affection? I don't mind a little, cute kiss here and there, but I don't find much harm in them; people do more horrible things on TV than they do in public, and good luck avoiding that. You can put books in here as well. Major kids and young adult books with odd relationship themes - need I mention Twilight, which talks about horrible, abusive relationships as if they're normal and becomes some odd hit? Honestly, whose kissing who in public is nothing compared to popular crap like that.

Re: Sexuality
Stuff like Twilight and True Blood introduces a whole new area of necrophilia. It's really quite disturbing actually; sometimes I think that 28 months later will turn into a story about a woman and her romance with several different maimed and brain-hungry zombies. True Blood doesn't seeing as vampires aren't dead in it. Twilight manages to sneak zoophiliac desires in there as well.
