I don't love the Thalmor. Even though High Elves are my favorite race.

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
Love? How about secret admiration.
The incredible confidence it would take to challenge the most powerful political entity in Tamrielic memory (even in its weakest moment)... and beat it to a standstill? The willpower it would take to maintain an ethos of cultural superiority against the headwind of a degenerate, egalitarian Empire? The cunning it would require to convince whole peoples to ally with one's cause in contradiction of their own long-term best interests... The subtlety needed to thoroughly defeat the greatest intelligence agency on Tamriel at its own game?
I don't love the Thalmor, but I do want to learn from them.

I like the outfits, and the fact that now I have an enemy I can truly despise. Other than that, they're just plain evil, with no visible redeeming qualities. They'll be annihilated, for certain.

Oh well, I like them. I wouldn't like anyone with their philosophy in real life, that goes without saying - but I think they make great villains, and they are kind of evil-with-style, y'know?

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
That's very true. Nothing suits a story better than a great or crafty villain, and the Thalmor fit in just fine. I think they're a sort of surprising entity. I never expected the Altmer to amount to anything at all, as they are always kind of portrayed to me as lofty, arrogant, and too stubborn to really get anything together, and yet here they are, with a very large and impressive grasp on Tamriel. That's rather awesome.Jordy wrote:...but I think they make great villains, and they are kind of evil-with-style, y'know?
And besides, let's not all be rude or disrespect people who might like one faction or another. All the TES races have their downsides, and the Thalmor were hardly the first to try to get their way in an elf-only nation. Keep your posts civil! Or I will be very sad, and that would be just awful.

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
I love the Thalmor. They deserve respect for what they believe in, and their actions are too often taken out of context. I believe they don't need to be the villain.

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
Well, "villain" is a subjective term, after all - much like the Stormcloaks vs. the Empire. It depends on which side of the line you stand that anyone is bad or good, which is why we can have so many great possibilities and discussions around here!
Still, I'd say the game sets them up as not very welcome in Skyrim...almost slanted as villains, really.

I don't think people should "respect" the bigotry of others. However the Thalmor are good villains.

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
Well, the Dunmer of the Third Era discriminated against those who did not believe in the divinity of the Tribunal and worshiped/revered Nerevar, so I suppose they're all bigots as well, yes? Likewise, so are the Stormcloaks, on the definition of a bigot:
A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs.

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
It does. I don't excuse those Dunmer of their actions. People have the right to worship whatever they like as long as they don't try to force people to convert or harm others.

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
It really comes down to who your character is and what they believe in.
@Kerr the Dunmer were the natives, and therefore get to write the laws. The Empire, however, is a guest in the Nords territory, and the Stormcloaks have taken advantage of that. The Dunmer were just holding on to their traditions that, at the time, were fading away.

Re: Lovers of the Thalmor!
That is fair, and no one can argue with you on that opinion, most certainly. There have been radical Imperials and other races as well, and they are equally as disliked as the Thalmor. Thankfully, factions like these don't represent the race of its members as a whole.Knight Captain Kerr wrote:People have the right to worship whatever they like as long as they don't try to force people to convert or harm others.
