Tear Jerkers...

Post by Lunarsweets »

I want to know what the saddest thing you have ever seen/heard/watched/etc. If they are songs, please include the lyrics (you dont have to) A really sad song is Concrete angel. it is really really sad...it is about a abused girl, i assume she is about 7. Here are the lyrics;

She walks to school with a lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back;
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday,
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace;
oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask,
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask;
Bearing the burdon of a secret storm,
Sometimes she wishes she was never born;

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night,
The neighbors hear but they turn out the lights;
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate,
When morning comes it will be too late.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

A statue stands in a shaded place,
An angel girl with an upturned face;
Her name is written on a polished rock,
A broken heart that the world forgot.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel
...and diplomacy continues to fail. Their ears fall deaf, and their eyes fall blind, yet they are still not mute. They will not know their errors. Only what they believe themselves. But we... we shall not be silenced.

To Live is to Die - Metallica

No lyrics, but it reminds me of my grandpa who passed away a few years back.

Kikujiro, a film by Takeshi Kitano - the scene where Masao discovers that his mother is not there anymore, that their trip has been wasted - and as Kitano's character realises the bond he has with the boy - always brings a tear to the eye. Bittersweet if ever there was.

And; Buffy das Slayer of Vampyre, Season 7, final episode of the entire series; Andrew telling Xander how his crazy brilliant ex-demon girlfriend died - he lies to Xander, but with the best of intentions. That is beautifully sad... :cry:
Oh; and how Firely will never get another series... nooooooooooo!!! :roll:

As for books; I've been re-reading it for over ten years, but Legend makes me teary everytime. He originally wrote the book when he thought he had a terminal cancer, so mortality and ones acceptance of death is one of the main themes.

That was sad. I don't remember the full details, but have recently started re-watching them through.

(Spoiler zone for Buffy and Angel final series ends)

It seemed to me, that with Buffy, where she was mortal, all the immortals got killed off at the end, and only the mortal chars left. And with Angel, who is (potentially at least) immortal, baring any nasty accidents, that all the mortals got killed off and only the "immortals" were left.

Waah?! And here was me thinking you didn't have any redeeming features.. :D If you own any Buffy DVD's, then you could've backed me up with my head-to-head with Doros. Bad Weka!

Anya died ignominiously, with a sword through the back. I think Andrew's line was (when Xander asks how she died); "She died saving me", to which broken-hearted but smiling Xander replies, "That's my girl, always doing something stupid". [paraphrased]
Not only was it a death of a greatly loved principle character, but it was the look on Andrew's face after he told him.

(as for your observation on the end of Buffy/Angel, I don't quite get it - if it's a life or death quandarry that will plague you 'til your dying day, PM me, as that really wouldn't be on-topic.. and I'd be in severe danger of rambling on when it comes to all things Whedon)

Hehehehehehe!

I did almost wade in, but wasn't really feeling up to it at the time, not to mention of course there is always the love for The Doros!! Couldn't poss take sides between you two!! :D

And actually wasn't Anya (I much loved her too, though I suspect in a slightly diff manner to you! :wink:) sliced in two by sword? Diagonally as far as I remember? :(

My actual replies to this would be something more personal. There are a lot more things I worry about than a TV or Movie character. Sometimes life is more real than we can comprehend.

Here's to those that were lost along the way!

Things in comparison would be Columbine, Virginia Tech, Norther Illinois University! I've lost friends along the way for some reason or another, never that harsh; but it doesn't mean that it doesn't affect me similarly.

I remember I was strumming on my guitar a few years back. I don't remember the name of the song, "The Cat's in the Cradle" I think it was called.

You see, the story behind the song is how a boy wants to spend time with his father, however the father always puts it off. When the boy was an adult, though, his father wished to make up for lost time, however the boy (Or man, I should say) had his own family and occupation to worry about, and denies his father.

My grandfather died when my father was sixteen, and whenever he hears that song, he thinks about he will never be able to spend time with his father.

It absolutely crushed me to see him with a tear in his eye when he walked in on me playing, telling me to stop.

That is the saddest thing I have ever experienced.
I missed it here.

When I'm at the pearly gates
This'll be on my videotape, my videotape
When Mephistopheles is just beneath
And he's reaching up to grab me

This is one for the good days
Living it all here in red, blue, green
On videotape, on videotape

You are my centre when I spin apart
Out of control on videotape, on videotape

This is my way of saying goodbye
Because I can't do it face to face
I'm talking to you, it's too late now
No matter what happens now, I won't be afraid
Because I know today has been the most perfect day I'll ever see.

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal
You look so tired unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide
And no alarms and no surprises please

Silent, silent
This is my final fit, my final bellyache
With no alarms and no surprises please

Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden
(Let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises please.
The Last Horse In The Sand of The Brotherhood.

I started dating my now-husband a month before my mother died. At this point, she didn't recognize me half the time when I went to visit her, and I often ended up translating what she said to the nurses, because she'd forget to speak English. At last count she had 11 tumors in her head, and they were really taking their toll. When I took my then-boyfriend-now-husband to visit her, she didn't seem to be aware of what was going on.

But then my grandparents came to visit at the very end, and my grandmother told me that my mom said something about me having a new boyfriend. I don't know why it matters so much to me, maybe because my mom never got to meet her grandchild, but I keep wondering whether she actually met and understood who my husband is before she died. I'm usually not a very emotional person, but the thought that my mother never really met the person I chose to spend my life with makes me feel some horrible loneliness that I can't explain, more than just being sad that she's dead.

The song itself isn't really that sad, but the video...Damn, I cried the first few times I saw it, now it just makes me really depressed. It takes a while to get, but if you watch it carefully, you'll understand that the video is actually of a mother whose son is comatose/ dying, and she comes out of the hospital with him in her arms and just carries him through everyday life, hoping that if they do ordinary things he'll wake up and everything will be all right, even though deep down she knows he's not coming back. By the end of the video, you see a flashback of how things used to be, with him all happy and playful and enjoying life. At the end, you see what really happened, you see the hospital and the IVs and the mother just sitting there, hoping for the best I guess...As pointed out in a comment from a while ago, this could be seen as a metaphor to a dying relationship. Either way, that's a definite tear jerker....

The lyrics aren't all that sad, like I said, but here they are anyway.

I hope that you like it in your little motel
And I hope that the suite sleeps and suits you well
Well I can see it as time and a sight through smell
That's why it's nice to be by yourself

Because that's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for, aren't I?
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for, darling

We treat mishaps like sinking ships and
I know that I don't want to be out to drift
Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and
They both tell me that we're better than this

Because that's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for, aren't I?
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for, darling

We trade tit for tat, yeah, that for this
And I don't think that there was an insult that was missed
I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and
I'm very sorry

Because that's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for, aren't I?
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for
That's what I'm waiting for, darling

The remainders of a shooting star
Landed directly on our broke-down little car
Before then we had made a wish
That we would be missed
If one or another just did not exist

Because that's what we're waiting for
That's what we're waiting for
That's what we're waiting on, aren't we?
That's what we're waiting for
That's what we're waiting for
That's what we're waiting for, darling

That's what we're waiting for
That's what we're waiting for
That's what we're waiting for, aren't we?

Ohne Dich by Rammstein. I get all teary-eyed when I hear that song.
English lyrics for the benefit of those who don't know German:

I'm going to go into the fir trees
There where I last saw her
But the evening is throwing a cloth upon the land
and upon the ways behind the edge of the forest
And the forest it is so black and empty
Woe is me, oh woe
And the birds sing no more

Without you I cannot be
Without you
With you I am alone too
Without you
Without you I count the hours without you
With you the seconds stand still
They aren't worth it

On the branches in the ditches
it's now silent and without life
And breathing becomes oh so hard for me
Woe is me, oh woe
And the birds sing no more

Without you I cannot be
Without you
With you I am alone too
Without you
Without you I count the hours without you
With you the seconds stand still
They aren't worth it without you

Why the infatuation with sad music? Just curious.

For me it's songs that remind me of when I was younger. My dad used to be in a band, and I used to really look up to him when I was younger. Some songs that he used to play are Tom Petty 'Running down a dream', and Hootie & the blowfish songs. In particular Time, and Hold my Hand. Sadly I can't listen to Hold my Hand anymore because it was the song that played at the dance where I met my girlfriend of 15 months, and she just dumped me very recently.

Y'know, the whole cherry-blossom schtick... of course, that doesn't account for [in my most humblest opinion] terrible dirge-metal tracks, but hey! Each to their crazy-own.

I'd put a link to a rather sad/beautiful song by das Radiohead, entitled Motion Picture Soundtrack - but right now I'm abstaining from the uncouth monster that is YouTube. Although come to think of it, music only ever gets me 'teary' when its magically brilliant (a live version of a certain Tori Amos track is so insanely great it has provoked a state of Watery Eyed Euphoric Happiness).

Back to tear-jerkers; the films Magnolia and American Beauty actually really can hit me bad. And The Thin Red Line is another of the few that's intelligent and powerful enough to genuinely affect me.

The true mother-of-all tear-jerkers, however, is a well-placed strike below the belt.

Nothing except for that will cause a grown man to bawl like a baby.

Well, when I was in sixth grade, my best friend was a girl named Casey. She was great. She was the nicest person I will ever meet. One day she started to get sick, so her mother took her to the doctor. She was diagnosed with luekemia... :cry:

I have some real stories. Maybe I'll share them later when I can work them out in my head.

As for movies, there were two moments that made me really sad. The first was from when I was kid. I used to always bawl when the T-800 was lowered into the molten metal. Another has never made me actually cry, but I was definately saddened at the end of Star Trek: Nemesis when Data sacrificed himself for the ship.

Man, I'm a nerd. :wink:

Begging to get this thread locked. Im not gonna take the bait, but i will say read the Hiram Key.

Theres sooo much i want to say.

But in the end, as (i think it was) Plato said, "If i know anything it is that i know nothing." So thats another reason for me to keep my mouth shut.

And to get this thread back on topic, you know what was sad in a way was forrest gump. Its also hilarious, but sad too.

Boy, oh, boy, oh, boy.. Do I so badly want to bite on this one...
All I'll say is (concerning the relative natures of two apparent Tear-Jerkers); I preffered Jim Caviezel in The Thin Red Line - which is infinitely more appropriate/responsible to the subject of humane suffering than S&M/religio-p*rn. Without a whole raft of unnecessary scenes, Mel Gibson's film could've really been something.
