Ending your Characters?
How long do most people use their characters, before they discard them, so to speak? Do you have multiple characters you keep returning to, or do you lay them to rest once certain things have been accomplished?
I'm curious, because personally speaking, I tend to create and use just two or three saves, and only really ever use the most recent. For instance, I haven't gone back to my first character on Oblivion at all, I just left her alone. I tend to have difficulty getting back into character, even more so considering I end up forgetting where I put most of my equipment, and lose track of what my character may or may not have been role-playing when it comes to factions.
On Morrowind, I have just three characters - one from 2003 that I haven't, and will never, touch again. And rather than delete one of my aborted characters, I even dropped every item of value in a monks house, and walked my forelorn Altmer into the ocean... (I figured he was another False Incarnate who couldn't deal with it)
So, how do you let go of characters?

Well, generally I have my characters complete certain tasks that I want them to do... in as much of a rp style as I can stand to do it in (except my first character, they're always a trial run at being uber powerful and doing everything to get a feel for the game).
I almost always keep the characters that I give any meaning to though. I just take them back to their preferred place of residence, have them sit down with whatever their favorite food or book might be, save, and never load back in unless I feel bored enough to continue leading around a mundane life with them. When I DO want to delete/kill them... well my characters like to go out in a blaze, killing guards, slaughtering towns, etc etc, until I hit the wrong person (Sheogorath) and fall helplessly to my death. (come to think of it... it would've just rocked my socks off if Oblivion had a killable god in it that wasn't completely necessary to kill-well... more like expel from the realm... no killing involved, he just didn't want to keep on getting hit) Most of the time I delete my un-cared for characters after giving them a proper suicide/death.

My save scheme for a character is to keep ten gamesaves rolling along, with permanent gamesaves retained at every tenth save. A typical list of saved games looks like "Save 1; Save 10; Save 20; Save 30; and Saves 34 through 43"— with the anticipation that Save 40 in the cluster will be kept while I rotate the most recent ten through.
There is no 'end'. Just a somewhat frustrated Imperial who, once again, finds herself at the front door of Weynon Priory on 28th of Last Seed 3€433. The kid really lives up to her name, that's for sure.

Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.
Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

When I "end" a character it's much the same as Oathbreaker's method. The only difference is I transfer their save files from my 360 to my PC using a backup adapter. Then I delete the files from the console. Usually there are only ever two characters on the system at any given time.
Fanfics: Archmage/Assassin
My method is usually this:
"Wow.. this is getting boring.. think I'll start a new game."
After that, I may go back or I may not. If I don't go back within a few days, it gets deleted. I have two characters, my original "do every single mission" character who I use for an unending rampage and my current character.

I like to pretend my characters have a past-life.
This will be confusing, so let me set it easier:
Sleek-Tail the Argonian saved Tamriel from Dagon, becomes the Listener to the DB, Champion of the Arena, and a thief for the Grey Fox before dying in an epic battle against the Bravil guards.
Sleek-Tail's ghost regrets her deed and goes back to the beginning (Bear with me here...) where it all began and is reincarnated.
Now we have Eragon the Wood Elf. He doesn't have any memory of being an Argonian assassin named Sleek-Tail, but he has her tendencies. For instance, if Piner (The monk at Weynon Priory) was killed by Sleek-Tail, then Eragon would see Piner and mysteriously have an urge to kill him for absolutly no reason.
Eragon now worships the Nine as a noble knight while struggling with his inner darkness. He always has dreams of fighting and killing every single Blade in CRT....killing Rufio and a bunch of people he doesn't know, ect.
Sorry for the long post. In short: "Reincarnation"
