DF is kicking my ass

I played the original Daggerfall GOTY edition in 1995-6.. I beat the MQ and obtained higher ranks in many factions.

Recently I installed a dosbox version with a modern controls patch, that is not my original copy.

Short story--

I'm getting my ass kicked. I'm getting it handed to me even in the starter dungeon. I've got a good build to be sure and in fact I've tried multiple starts and builds but for some reason it's really quite harder than I remember.

In this most recent start I'm trying to kill a skeleton on the main stairs in the starter dungeon. I've saved the game just before I meet him. I've attempted to kill him several times but he always wins. I'm quite confused--

well, For some reason after I restarted the game I was able to play "normally". Before that everything was like a super-ninja.
