Thanks for that, collectro; I seemed to remember Sithis being an aspect of, or somehow related to, Padomay (the primordial chaos of the Beginning Place, right? I need to brush up on my mythic history).

Sithis set events in motion for the creation of the mundus, through Lorkhan

Re: "Purpose" of the Dark Brotherhood
There is a book in Skyrim (I forgot what it is) that explains why divines or daedra need followers. It says that Gods are nothing but spirits that have become much stronger than the normal spirits by their deeds in the mortal realm. It also says that it is possible that a God's "ranking" with the other Gods depends highly on the amount of followers, therefore the higher the number of followers the more powerful and influential a deity is over the world. That is probably why they need followers because they want to influence the world as much as they can, and the Night Mother does it by granting people assassinations.

Re: "Purpose" of the Dark Brotherhood
I read again recently though that Sithis is noted as being a primordial chaos as old as first et'Ada, existing in the void. I can see however how he/it could be a Padomaic aspect though.JoeyDestructo wrote:sithis is padomayCorneliusFunk wrote:Thanks for that, collectro; I seemed to remember Sithis being an aspect of, or somehow related to, Padomay (the primordial chaos of the Beginning Place, right? My mistake - I must have misread something elsewhere, because the lore article on Sithis agrees with what you said.

Actually, I think we must truly realize that the whole purpose of the Dark Brotherhood is to annoy you while you're having a nice peaceful sleep.

There's a lot of controversy as to whether Sithis is actually a synonym for another Daedra, have any of you guys caught wind of this?

Re: "Purpose" of the Dark Brotherhood
I think what he means is that "Sithis" as worshiped by the DB may actually be Mephala speaking...the Night Mother may be either her priestess or a physical manifestation she can inhabit. The reason being that Sithis itself is widely believed to be a force with no needs or wants of its own except change, rather than a sentient being that can give orders or be pleased by actions. Mephala on the other hand, does have wants and needs and enjoys murder. She is the patron of the Morag Tong from which the DB split centuries ago. It's possible the entire "Sithis" thing with the DB is a clever disguise for her that they've fallen for.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Re: "Purpose" of the Dark Brotherhood
According to "Fire and Darkness", one possible intrepration of the schism between the Morag Tong and the Dark Brotherhood is that the DB refused to accept Vivec as the assumption of Mephala. Rather than worship Vivec, they opted for a far more ambiguous avatar of Mephala in the guise of the Night Mother.
