After hours of rowing, the group finally reached the other side of the curious stretch of ocean that separated the mainland from Vvardenfell. It was clear from simply looking at it how different it had become - lush green forests grew everywhere, and craggy black earth could be seen from lava flows. They were slightly off course to the North - and ended up at Gnisis, which was a ash covered shell of what it once was.
"By Azura..." Leiden muttered. The village had been covered in ash - and overtaken by nature. Windows had been blown out, and inside was a thick coating of ash. Bodies, incased in ash, could be seen all around. It was a wonder any of his people had made it out alive. Stepping off the boat, he pulled his pack over his shoulder. "We'll stay here for tonight. God knows what's out there at night nowadays - only the Nine could survive what happened here..."
"By the Nine... I didn't know the eruption could have such an impact here..." Llarays murmured, getting off the boat. "My lungs are already getting clogged." Llarays coughed. "I see no suitable place in Gnisis to make camp, so we should probably wander off into the wilderness, although I fear the sights we'll see there."
Qa'Mhirr looked about, he kicked the door to one of the hovels, moving on after noticing the ash was going to prevent him from looking for shinies.
The Khajiit fixed a wide eyed stare at Llarays, "What of the Ashmask we spoke of? and isn't this a mining town? perhaps we can settle in one of the mine shafts, provided the door isn't made of bug like these." he pointed back at the hovel he had kicked.
"Maybe we can clear the Eggmine, although I know nothing of the monsters in there. The Ash Mask might be useful, I don't know about it's condition, though."
"I think it's called a Kwama Egg..." Llarays said out loud. "I think I've heard of monsters in the Kwama Eggmines, too. Kwama Horker, I think?" He walked around, searching for the Eggmine.
"Let's find the Temple." Leiden said. "It'll probably be the most intact building around... and it'll be where most of the loot is hidden. Including that Ashmask." He started walking towards the centre of the town. "C'mon. I want to get a camp set up before it gets dark."
Llarays followed Leiden. "I doubt the Ashmask will be there, as someone may have tried to grab it and use it. Maybe that person is still alive, but I doubt it, too." Llarays looked for the Temple. "I guess we can pray while we're at the Temple. Pray that we'll survive."
"Look around." Leiden gestured. "Some of the people here choked to death within minutes. If anyone got out of here, they'd not be looking for the Ashmask. They'd be in a boat and praying to Azura that they made it out with their lives, let alone what they could grab. If the Ashmask isn't there, it'll be because the eruption destroyed it."
"Ah. That's right. Let's go into the Temple, if it's not suitable, we'll go into the Eggmine and clear out whatever monsters there are." Llarays sighed. He walked towards what he thought was the Temple. "On the subject of false gods, I expect a shrine to a Saint in the Temple, too. Not only ALMSIVI."
"Aye, but Dwarven coins can be heavy. The dwarves must have been stocky to carry the armor they did around." The neared the temple. The doors were wide open, and the few windows it had were blown out. Bodies littered the doorstep. "Looks like they thought the same we did - that the Temple would be saver than anywhere else." Stepping carefully over the ash incased bodies, he looked around inside. "We should be fine here for the night." He said. "I'll get a fire going - you guys get those doors barred and barricade the windows. I doubt whatever comes out at night here is friendly."
"They're probably not Ash monsters, that's for sure. The eruption likely blew them all off Nirn. But I don't know what it is." Llarays said while taking an ash-covered board and putting it on the window. He took a bit of water out of a bottle he had and splashed it on some ash, making it like mud. He then put that between the board and the window, making it stick.
"Anything that comes here for food at night must have strong jaws or sharp fangs to pick at the....leftovers," Qa'Mhirr mused as he walked into the temple.
He watched as Llarays started barricading the windows, "Why doesn't this one just block the courtyard archway? it'd take less wood and make it easier for us to stand watch, we can use whatever banners survived to block the windows and door."
Leiden grinned. "The Khajiit has the right idea men. Board that up instead." Leiden walked into the central shrine room, and put down his pack, taking out a piece of flint. He then used the charcoal thick ash to start a fire, and broke up a nearby chair for firewood
"Well, that's a good idea, but maybe the monsters who come out at night have good climbing skills or something." Llarays said, walking out of the Temple. He picked up a wooden side that looked as if it had come from a crate. "This is for the windows," he said, tossing the wood inside. A slab of packed mud, the material used in Dunmeri buildings, was also thrown inside. "That material have any use?"
"Climbing Monsters? That's why we keep watch," Qa'Mhirr paused, "This one will look for more wood inside, must be some crates or doors inside we could use."
After a moment, Qa'Mhirr came out slowly dragging a musty wooden crate, he pushed it out into the courtyard towards Llarays, "This one needs some height to be a scout, unless someone else can see through the dark, the ash should be easy to climb," he said, looking at the porous black walls.
"How long should I keep watch for? I'd expect maybe 5 hours." Llarays asked, moving the crate to a good spot. "It seems like I inherited good eyesight from my father. I'll put up a Shield along somewhere if anything happens, and I'll yell inside. That okay?" Llarays queried. He took out his bow. "Good thing I took this along."
"Just long enough to let this one get some sleep before midnight," Qa'Mhirr started climbing up the temple dome, reaching the top he looked around, "Elven eyes may be sharp, but that doesn't get one far in this sea of black ash in the dark." The dagi-raht slid back down into the courtyard, "Khajiit has done this many times and should be able to make it to twilight if he sleeps now."
Sorry Duru, but I was planning to let someone else in who came to me with a good idea.
Apologies about not posting yesterday, but I've been sick, and it slipped my mind... again. Breaking my own rules is embarrassing, certainly.
"I'll take first watch, 5 hours, and then I'll call you Llarays." He said. "You guys were rowing all day, so you must be exhausted. We're moving at 6, and we stop at 8. I don't want to move through the dark unless it's absolutely necessary."
