Topic buttons not active?

Post by ragged-gothic »

:?: I don't know if any one else is experiencing this, but when I’ve opened the forums up the last two days the buttons on the left which show new messages and hot topics are not active...they just show the plain white message button. :? I was wondering if anyone else is having this happen, and it is a problem with the forum, or if it is only happening to me, and an artifact of my own computer.

It's happened to me a couple times, where I've logged in and it didn't show new ones.. iono the reason for it...

Sometimes it also takes two tries for me to log in

Yep, I had exactly the same thing.

I think it's cause you're still logging into the "old" site?

I would log in at:
http://www.uesp.net/phpbb/login.php

And it would look like I was logged in, but would show no new topics, but I would also still have the "Log in" little icon at the top. And if I clicked on that, I could then log in properly to the new site:
http://forums.uesp.net/login.php

But then it would still show as no new msgs.

Once I twigged, and just logged straight into the new site, I was OK again. Not sure if it's the same issue as you have, but maybe??

The site address only changed sometime this week I think.

That is it. The Forums are in transition from the change. Change your bookmarks to the new URL. I do not do IT stuff, so don't know the specifics.

In that case a change is needed on the UESP.net homepage. The UESP Forums link there is to the old forums, thats how I usually get to the forums, and explains why that's been happening.

This is the exact page that I most recently logged in from:

http://forums.uesp.net/login.php?sid=ca ... ca451385ad

Normally, when I come to the forums, I open my browser to:

http://www.uesp.net/phpbb/

then I just follow the login link at the top of the page. (The last link in the second line of links under the page title.) This is the method that took me to the login link I noted, above. At least I know, now, that other people here have had the same thing happen, so it must be at the UESP server end and not client side equipment.

Anyway...it seems, after acting up for about a day and a half, to have cured itself. :) At least for now.... :? >shrug<

This is weird now.

I wasn't having any problems with the old URL. The only time I had the New Reply (unread) Icon clear, was if I was opening a topic, and the page didn't load. All of the topics that I had not read, were not marked as New Reply. This was back when we were having problems the last month or two. It has actually been much better since. I have not had that happen for a few weeks now.

However, today I have a similar issue with the New Reply Icons, except reverse of what the others are having. When I switch from Mod Control, to normal viewing, and the other way around, topics that I just read, are showing up as unread, with the New Reply Icon. :?

Ah, topics showing up as unread when I have read them happens to me all the time.

Though now that you mention it, I think that it might be quite alot better recently. Not sure if since the new address, or maybe abit before then as well?

:x GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!:x

The vile, wretched thing is at it again.   All topics again are showing up as read, whether there are new messages in them or not.

:!: Also, now text set smaller than normal is displaying at 12 point (on my computer, at least), as well! :!: I note that this problem may be an artifact of Firefox, again though. I have heard that phpbb sometimes has formatting issues with the Firefox and Netscape browsers.

Oh, but there are times I want to tell this computer, “back ta the loch wi’ yew, Nessie” and pitch it out the window. :( :x

If you are getting to the forums via the main UESP page, they will often malfunction. The main page leads to http://uesp.net/phpbb which is the old page. Logging in there will cause it to mark unread as read and force you to log back in.

If, however, you use a bookmark or something to go to http://forums.uesp.net then it should work just fine. The problem lies within logging into the old system when you should be logging into the new one.

No, that’s not how I do it. I access the forums from the main page, but I follow the link at the top; I don’t try to login in directly from the main page. The link at the top leads to:

http://forums.uesp.net/login.php?sid=d3e11c5f879ab7c2755001f4f1cd5451 (emphasis mine)

At least that’s where it lead to when I logged in this most recent time, and I am still having the same problem. You’ll not that the URL I was at was the same one that you specified — no “/phpbb’’ in it. Just the address and a bunch of alphanumeric identifier info after the question mark. So I don’t believe that I’m logging in at the wrong place. :? I don’t understand what’s going on, though; I hope someone can clarify it for me.

I meant from http://UESP.net

Both the link in the forum anniversary bit and the link on the side in the community tab lead to the uesp.net/phpbb, which can easily cause this. It was meant simply as a warning to others, that if they come from the main wiki page, it is likely to not work roperly

If you just use:
http://forums.uesp.net/login.php
then you shouldn't have any probs I don't think?

You shouldn't, but sometimes it hiccups ;)

But that is a lot more reliable than the phpbb link

Well, the last few times I’ve logged in, since weka posted, I have carefully checked the URL, and if one clicks on the login link at the top of the main page (http://forums.uesp.net), it definitely takes one to the http://forums.uesp.net/login.php page, not the /phpbb page. Apparently that long suffix I was getting following a question mark is something that only appears when one backpages on one’s browser. Of course the last couple of days it has stopped “hiccuping”, as okiphia puts it. I think, at this point, I shall count myself lucky and hope the hiccups have stopped. I will let you all know if it starts happening again, though.
