Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
I'm still playin, playing Skyrim has made me want to deliver deeper into the story. Its been really rewarding so far to play Arena, i'm at Elden Grove trying to beat the main quest.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
This game will always be played.
It is difficult to play without being intrigued by the abundance of lore in anyway, and starting a few months ago, I booted up the Floppy-version of Arena on DOSBOX on my netbook computer... lagged like crazy and I eventually found a copy of the CD-version on the UESP Wiki, of which I had downloaded onto my recently acquired Laptop. Runs smoothly now, and the game is a lot easier in my second playthrough since I know better, such as to look for my Endurance first above all.
I recently acquired the sixth Staff piece. I am currently musing over excess tasks, those randomly generated ones, and will eventually continue the main questline.
Daggerfall is next, whenever it comes.
I had also started doing a Let's Play on Youtube of Arena, but unfortunetly, I had lost my game and the video files. Thankfully the saved game files returned when I downloaded the game again. As for the video files... *Sad face*

No need, it's a free download
You can get it from Bethesda's Site, or try here. Go for, ArenaSetup.exe for ease of install without fiddling with DOSBox

Have fun with Arena and Daggerfall. They can be a bit of a pain getting used to when you've been fed on a diet of Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, but they're well worth giving a shot.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
I really wanted to try this game, but my laptop wasn't even capable of running it without extreme lag. I tried to push on, however, I got killed by the very first enemy in the game, because the combat was too complicated for my simple mind to handle. I uninstalled the game, gave up, and went back to playing other games I could understand. This was three months ago. You may laugh at me.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
That's because you (probably) downloaded the official version from Bethesda. Use the links Duruza posted instead. That version runs much smoother.
Afraid I can't help you much with understanding the combat, but it'll hopefully be easier when you got the game running properly.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
For Combat, I find it helped me to back away from my foes a bit. The system grows on you, but I did find that when I first started I was standing too close. The Hero of Arena has a fair reach and it actually seems to improve your chance to hit.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
Well, the thing is, I have no idea how to attack. I should feel really stupid for this, but I've tried clicking like a maniac, holding the mouse-button down and randomly moving my finger across my laptop's mousepad, and various other things.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
To attack, you have to click and hold the LMB and drag it across the screen. It'd probably be difficult with a touchpad, a mouse is advisable .The direction you drag dictates the direction your weapon swings in. You should be able to kill most of the rats and goblins in the starting dungeon in one to two hits.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
Just finished the game! Definitely very interesting experience. My character (High Elf\Sorcerer) was very weak at the beginning and enemies were just threatening. The game also was pretty scary, because imagination filled the gaps of old graphics. Last dungeons were insanely big, basically labyrinths, and that was cool, but become annoying pretty fast. Loved them anyway. Especially dungeons with a story - like one where mad priest got lost. Also, I heard in Skyrim every dungeon is a circle, leading you to where you started, so I prefer arena.
In the second half of the game my character became undefeatable, treating enemies like sources of mana, kiling everything with 1-2 spells, protecting himself with 99 points\level shield and beating Tharn like nobody's business.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
haha, glad you had fun. by the end you are dealing thousands of points of damage in custom made death-ray spells! that ebony sword just never runs out of charge. Last time I finished Arena was back in '95. wow ,time flies.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
Wow I'm surprised theres a thread about this. Wow. Well I don't play anymore but I certainly enjoyed the game for what it is. Certainly a nice addition to the Elder Scrolls series and I really liked the music in it. I think I played a Redguard because Imperial wasnt an option and Nords are too boring

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
The Redguards also have a nice bonus To Hit with melee weapons (level / 3), which beats the Nords 50% chance not to take damage from Frost attacks, and which is one reason I like them in Arena, although I tend to choose the Dunmer for their bonus To Hit with both melee and ranged wapons (level / 4).

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
I mostly played Arena to pass the time between Skyrims announcement and it's release date and although my first TES game was Daggerfall I still felt Arena's age. After a while I got back into the game and really enjoyed it and I probably would be playing it right now if my computer hadn't died.OblivionDuruza wrote:Have fun with Arena and Daggerfall. I've never played Arena before, Every time I consider it I just load Daggerfall because it's superior imo and with most of the patches it's not that glitchy. One of these days I'll play it but I'm not sure when exactly, I've grown a bit bored of Skyrim atm, then again I've probably logged like 80-100 hours on it.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
Geez, Haven't been back on this thread for a while. Good to see plenty of people still playing.
I'm still playing Skyrim on console. So Arena is waiting quietly on my PC.
As for Arena V Daggerfall. Games always get better as time goes on. Obviously as equipment gets better, graphics and game play evolve and improve. It's always hard to compare because of this.
Arena for me, holds special memories. It was the first real PC game that hooked me into RPG's. Countless weekends playing with my mate. I'd play for a few hours and then he'd play for a few hours. If I were in front, I'd draw out a 'rectangle' and mark where the up and down points were in each dungeon. Then when he'd play, he would quickly get through each dungeon and then start marking out the next few. This was only for the main quest maps thought.
When Daggerfall came out, it was more of a game I shared with my little brother. We would spend for ever trying to out do each other. Borrowing money from different banks and never returning those areas in fear of being caught by the law. Spending hours in trade shops behind the first row of shelving fighting town guards. They would line up and couldn't get to you, but you could swing your weapon through the shelving and get them. Looting their gear and gaining experience.
Both great games. Both had great things about them.
But I'm always bias towards Arena, cause she's the one that got me hooked.

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
I'm playing through it for the first time now...
A friend got me into the Elder Scrolls series by introducing me to Skyrim, and I liked it so much I decided to go back and play through all of them (all of the main ones, anyway).
As I told him, I used to be more of a Final Fantasy fan, but then I took an arrow to the knee... (Yes, I know it's an overdone joke, sorry... lol)

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
Sadly,I don't think Arena will keep you long in it's grasp because it's a seriously dated game.I'd recommend you start from Morrowind onwards because it would be a more "familiar place" and with the added mods you'll feel closer to Skyrim

Actually, I've pretty nearly blown through it, until a glitch prevented me from getting through Dagoth-Ur unless I can find the Skeleton Key, the only artifact whose rumor seems to NOT point me in the direction of someone in a specific bar... :/

Re: Arena - Who's still playing?
Yeah the combat can be a little difficult to get used to at first, but I think it is true to say that it grows on you and you do get the hang of it when you start to work out its quirks. Have you tried adjusting the mouse sensitivity, or am I thinking of Daggerfall? What I will say is, don't get too close to your foes, sometimes it's easier to step back and take them from a distance. That and the hitbox is often more generous than you think, a nic sweeping motion is generally the way to go.derp53 wrote:I downloaded it with my friend.... the transition from console to computer is difficult. tho the attacks are a stickler for me. any advice, should i just use magic instead of a sword?
