Hey...please don't kill me for this idea, but..
Why doesn't DaveH upgrade the board to phpBB3, from the present phpBB2 forum software? Its more secure, modern, and the gold version is already out.

Converting forum to phpBB3...
He may one day, then again, probably not.
Daveh is more than busy keeping up with the Wiki. He only deals with the Forums, when there is an issue the Mods can not take care of.
There is the problem with the server, and the forum, as well as the Wiki being slow. Talking with a few Wiki Admins, there was a discussion of maybe making the Wiki & Forums on two different Servers. As with the Wiki Growing, and the Forums getting more activity, it is bogging down from both ends.
If this does happen, then upgrading to PhpBB3 might be an option. I just do not think Daveh would have the time available to upgrade just for upgrading.

Hmm...I understand. It's just that, upgrading to phpbb3 is a matter of uploading several (under 7) megabytes of files into a folder, going through the update process which takes less than filling in three or four fields of simple information and clicking 'Go', and deleting the old files, and renaming the new folder phpbb.
But again, its up to Daveh..

Unfortunately, its a bit more complicated than that. There are a few custom modifications to the forum code in addition to a bunch of mods installed. If the is an obvious benefit, or a large demand to upgrade, I'll certainly consider it but I generally don't update just because I can. Similarily with the MediaWiki software. Also I have to consider the worst case of the upgrade breaking something which means the forums are down for a few hours/days. I'd probably do a test case first but that means more time duplicating the forum database etc... so the live upgrade is as fast and smooth as possible.
Basically any work on the site comes down to what is the best use of my time since my spare time lately has been scarce. If someone can convince me a certain upgrade/change/work is worth it I'll do it.

On the question of phpbb 3.X, is it more compatible with Firefox and Netscape than earlier versions? For example, the current board, when viewed with Firefox or Netscape, always moves tags to the end of the text block, rather than inserting them at the cursor as Internet Explorer does. Also, does phpbb 3.X allow for the use of all (six digit, alphanumeric) web colours rather than just those in the pull down menu? If phpbb 3.X has these features, and others that give a wider variety of formatting options, I would recommend the upgrade. If nothing new is gained, however, I would say why waste the effort.
