UESP email spam?

Post by Nocturnal »

Not sure to post my problem here but hopefully a mod can help.

I got an email from "[email protected]" about someone sending me a message on this site but alas when I checked here of course there is no message. Gmail has already warned me it might be a fake address but it didn't go straight into my junk folder. I don't have any of my first confirmation emails when I joined to compare it so should I assume this is spam and be blocked?

All my UESP mail comes from [email protected], that uesp@gmail seems odd. Maybe worth looking into from the Mods/Admins perspective?

My mistake, it was from from uespnet but it is strange that gmail warned me it might be spam when i have gotton emails from here fine before. I'm just wondering why it said i had a message when I don't :?

But since that is the email for this site I will just ignore that email.

For everyone's knowledge, all site generated e-mail for the forums comes from the address [email protected], and I believe has for about three months now. I noticed the change only because Gmail also warned me it could be spam, too. Coincidentally, that marker can be cleared it the domain is properly registered, so let me see if perhaps we can't do that to avoid the confusion.

As for it saying you have a message when you don't, it could be that the e-mail was delayed, which happens. If you ever suspect something odd might be going on, though, don't be afraid to let someone on the staff know so we can look into it. Better safe than sorry, always! 8)

I also get the warning "Tämä viesti ei ehkä ole tullut osoitteesta [email protected]" = "This mail may not have come from the address [email protected]" with every message from here.

My opinion is, you can't protect yourself 100%, you need to

a. Have necessary security programs working,
b. Use your own judgment in what you open.

I've hadn't had a new message in about 1 year and a bit now so it's def not delayed lol. I'm thinking maybe the person that sent it must have deleted it or something to that effect. I'm just going to more cautious with what I open now on my gmail.

Thanks for the response and thanks to Jeff as well.

If that happens, you will see a PM in your inbox that says "This message has been deleted before it was delivered," and your only option will be to delete it. The e-mail should always be accurate.

I imagine only Daveh and the admins can tell us that (gmail does have a ridiculous amount of size - perhaps to help with that?), but to solve all of our curiosity I will ask and see if perhaps we can at least get it verified so that it doesn't get marked as spam. :)

Edit: Just PMed the Big Cheese, so we shall have some reassurance ASAP.

I remember us having problems with site emails a while back (see http://www.uesp.net/wiki/User_talk:Daveh#Registration). I assume this was the solution?

I had forgotten I had set this email to [email protected] and have just switched it to be [email protected].
