Re: Things you hate about skyrim
buddy I have 400 hours on Oblivion, combined with all my characters and saves, I am a fan, never doubt me this. It took three years and five discs to make that one happen and a truck load of game stopping bugs and stupid saves that forced me to start over and all of my fifth to seventh grade free time.

It's interesting then, that Skyrim is still better than every other game out there. Most people here though (rightfully so) only really compare it to other ES games.
I wonder then how did Fallout 3 help/hurt this series?

Saying that Skyrim is "better" than every other game is a purely subjective statement, and quite unsubstantiatable. (Is that even a word?)

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
I completely agree, which makes it all the more frustrating that has so many flaws, and speaks to the disparity of the modern gaming market. I don't feel like Skyrim is better than any game ever made or anything, to keep what I just said from being hypocritical. It is, though, certainly the best (or one of the best, tied with one or two others at most) game to come out in 2011.SpikeSpeigel wrote:It's interesting then, that Skyrim is still better than every other game out there. I disagree, well, sort of. If you can compare games based on individual characteristics, like graphics, voice acting, musical score, reliability etc., I think you can make a real argument to the superiority of certain games over others. It's difficult, if not impossible, to wholly separate bias and taste, but I think more than possible to come close.Evil-i wrote:Saying that Skyrim is "better" than every other game is a purely subjective statement, and quite unsubstantiatable. Answering the OP, the thing I hate most is the new lore contradicting the old. Makes it very confusing from an RP standpoint.

Ah, I have actually found something that annoys me to no end in Skyrim. I cannot jump while running. I bet there's so many jumps in game I could make if I could simply run and jump at the same time.

More on topic: I hate how uninformed everyone seems to be, even though I slayed a dragon and became thane, Balgruffs kid still thinks I'm "another wanderer here to lick his fathers boot."

Nah, you're right on that. I guess I shouldnt assume on an ES site that Skyrim is everyone's favorite current game.
Notwithstanding, how much they say on the boards that they "hate" it.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
What can you do, its AI... Enemies are really dumb. With high enough stealth skills [sneak, light armor plus archery/marksman] you can literally walk in front of their eyes and they won't see you. I understand the idea of being a master of sneak but c'mon, it's not like you become invisible... Plus enemies are really dumb, as you mentioned. You can kill them one by one with a bow and they won't even realize what's going on - even if you kill them in front of their eyes... It seems like enemies in Morrowind were way smarter than in Skyrim... Thanks to this topic, I can voice my opinion and I'm not happy with Skyrim. It looks to me like they took Oblivion and slightly modified it instead of going to the roots - Morrowind. Plus this whole console like feeling is just terrible; menu is awful (can't find anything when I have 400 llbs of things or in the chest), I don't like it that they removed hero from the menu (remember how in Morrowind you could equip items and it showed you how you look like in your menu?), whole world seems to be just so console; after while when you play NPCs just keep repeating same dialogue over and over [for example guards or thieves in the thieves guild hideout]. After whole month of playing I see no major difference from the Oblivion to Skyrim. By removing more things [such as skills] it goes to the idea that in TES VI we gonna have 10 or less of them instead of many... In Morrowind you had many skills to choose from [for example - combat was divided into separate branches] and in SKyrim you have daggers, blades etc. under one handed... I don't like it. By making it more simple they kill the TES.Abel wrote:The fact that enemies are as dumb as a brick. Im really tired of everyone saying morrowind was soooo great.
It was repetitive and difficult to get into.
Skyrim has its problems but so far I prefer this over morrowind.
They removed stuff for a smoother gaming experience!?
They must die!!
They took away stuff that most of the time goes unnoticed?
This sucks, morrowind is great!!
That's basically the majority's argument.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
While I love the heck out of Skyrim, and it even made my top 10 list of my favorite video games of all time, there are a few things that irritate me, most of them minor.
1. The kids. I don't mind the fact that you can't kill them or harm them. I understand why they did that. People would whine and complain and try to get the game banned if you could do that, and if there weren't any children... Well, it wouldn't make a ton of sense to have an entire game world and not a single child lived in it, but I can live with that. My problem is that it seems Bethesda made the most hair-pullingly, spinal cord-ripping outting and beating with-ing characters children, meaning they cannot be killed. I'm not sure if they did this on purpose, or because children are annoying, but it irks me that I can't mercilessly slaughter some punk that thinks it's a good idea to threaten or annoy someone wearing daedric armor, wielding an axe bigger than he or she is, and doesn't expect a consequence.
2. The world just felt... Well, a bit small, really. Maybe I'm the type of guy who likes titanically large game worlds to explore, but I just felt a bit cramped in Skyrim. Everything seemed a bit too close. I prefer making an epic adventure out of riding to the next town. So sue me.
3. Fus Ro Dah. I wasn't expecting it to sound as good as it did in the trailer. I know it would be pretty strange if every time you did that it sounded like a angry roar, but... come on! It doesn't even sound like your character is trying to get the words out! Albeit, I've only played through the game as a Breton and a Khajiit, so maybe the other races have a better sounding voice, but I digress.
4. The execution scenes. I'm a sucker for slo-mo annihilation of my foes, but it just felt a bit weak. Most of the movements just don't look natural or human, they just look... Well, I can't think of a way to describe it. It just looks off. And the dragon execution scenes, boy, those got on my nerves. Sure, it sounds really cool that you can jump on a dragon's head and start pummeling the thing into submission, but in reality, it looks like you're trying to force it to brush it's teeth. That, and the animation doesn't seem to sync up right, so my character usually isn't even hitting anything, and I was dissapointed that there wasn't a unique animation for maces or axes. Couldn't they at least do that? Axes and maces are not thrusting weapons, and they should not make the same sounds as a sword when you pummel a dragon with them. I also have a small complaint about the decapitations. I'm not saying I don't like them, in fact, I love them. Nothing like letting the heads roll. But for one, I don't think you can decapitate someone cleanly with a mace in one strike, and even if you could, would it make a slicing sound? Doesn't seem like it. But at this point, I'm just nit-picking.
5. No spells to unlock containers or doors. This isn't as much of a flaw as it is an annoyance. I'm terrible with precision mini-games, I'll admit it. That's why I loved the spells that could do the hard work for you, but it seems I can't even have that now.
Overall, yeah, there are a ton of things that suck about Skyrim. Same with any game. You're never going to find the perfect game. This game, however, came close. There are far more things I loved about it than I hated about it, and for me, that makes it worth the frustrations.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
There's no reason to invalidate other people's opinions that genuinely enjoyed Morrowind more than Skyrim. Everyone has their own taste. There are certain features of a game that are important to some people and not as important to others. That is where difference of opinion comes from. Some people like having a lot of variety at the cost of, maybe, some hassle. Others would like it more streamlined. You cannot please everyone.Rynkar wrote:Im really tired of everyone saying morrowind was soooo great.

That's basically the majority's argument.
That said, I'm enjoying Skyrim. I'm taking my time, I'm almost level 20 and I haven't touched the main quest, did a little bit of the College of Winterhold but mostly adventuring; so my opinions on the game are obviously going to be based on what I've seen so far.
I'm not at the point yet where I know enough about the game to be able to exploit it...So, playing on Adept level, I am really liking the amount of challenge it offers me. Not too much, and, importantly, not too little. I like the fact that sometimes I miscalculate and I'm killed, that I sometimes have to start over a battle several times to win. It just means you have to use your head a bit when fighting, maybe employ some unstraightforward tactics, not just barge in hacking away.
The magic system: honestly, the spells they've removed don't bother me too much. Yeah, it would have been cool if they left them in, and if I were in charge, I probably wouldn't have thought to take them out; but so far, at no point have I thought, "Gee, I really wish I could Water Walk right now". Levitation I've accepted as something that's probably never going to return in Elder Scrolls games. And I like the way the magic feels. It's very...direct. I never really played as an offensive mage in Morrowind, it just didn't feel powerful enough --- you waved your hands and an orange poof appeared. I think the way they did it in Skyrim is very satisfying, at least to me. You can actually shoot an ice spike through an enemy and it will stay there (and then you're left wondering how they're still fighting with a giant slab of ice stuck in their face, but no matter).
As for the lack of spellmaking...well. You couldn't really make your own spells, just combine different effects. It was no different than casting several different spells, but at the same time. Or, you could make a spell effect super powerful; but didn't I just hear people complaining about Skyrim being too easy already? I personally don't miss it too much.
Anyway, I think I'm spending too much time talking about how the things that some people dislike about Skyrim are actually OK...there are a few features of the game that I, while I hesitate to use the word "hate", really wish they'd have done differently. The really big one is the lack of non-quest-related artifacts, and very levelled loot. That might not sound like a very big deal at first, but for me, it takes a huge chunk of the fun out of dungeon diving. The most you can expect when clearing out a dungeon in Skyrim is maybe finding something that's slightly better than what you have already. Wouldn't it be exciting if you could wander into a ruin by chance and find an ancient artifact protected by powerful guardians? I hate to bring up Morrowind, but how awesome was it to stumble into Ibar-Dad or Mamaea and walk out with Eleidon's Ward or the Fang of Haynekhtamet? It's the element of surprise it had, I guess. Even if you can't make much use of it (for instance if you don't use the artifact's corresponding skill), it was a cool feeling. It made it memorable. In Skyrim (as far as I can tell), you don't get a nice artifact without having to do a quest and knowing beforehand that you'll get one. And clearing out dungeons, while the dungeons themselves are varied and nice looking (I commend them for that, HUGE improvement from Oblivion and hell, even Morrowind as far as appearance is concerned), is just predictable. Here's the boss, and in this chest nearby I'm going to find a _______ of ________.
Speaking of which, it's going to sound like a really petty concern, but here's something that bugs me. Just scroll down this list for a moment: http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Generic_Magic_Weapons . Do you, by ANY chance, detect a pattern? Granted, in Morrowind (yes, I'm comparing them again....just an example of a game that did it better) they had a formula for naming generic magic items (I'm not just talking about weapons) as well, but it was looser, there were deviations, and the end result definitely had more of a ring to it. I'd much rather be swinging a Steel Shardmauler than a Steel Warhammer of Frost. Yes, in Skyrim there's a huge amount of them, but somehow that doesn't make it any more exciting. Casper is complaining because item names aren't epic enough. Well, somehow it's a legitimate reason for me. One, it makes stuff you find predictable --- here. You're going to find [material] [weapon type] of [effect]. Two, for some weird reason I like being attached to the stuff I use. I want to feel like my "loadout", if you will, is special. A lot of people aren't going to have a problem with this, but it was a pretty big thing for me. And so easy to fix, too! Just have a person (my god, I could have done it) sit down for a couple hours and rename the weapons, and it would add so much.
There's a somewhat related question, why isn't there anything nice just lying around? I have yet to see (and, I have a hunch, never will) anything better than iron or fur stuff sitting on shelves, and so on. The only way (as far as I can tell) of getting _______ is after level _______. This bores me. Now, the Wiki says that stuff might appear randomly some levels "early", but A) I haven't seen any evidence of this, and B) key word, randomly. There it is again. I guess I just get a warm feeling from seeing stuff placed with consideration. I may or may not find Elven armour in a dungeon chest ---- why the bajingles would it be in a chest, anyway? Wouldn't whoever was protecting the chest be wearing it? Don't people own nice armour in Skyrim, is it all tucked away in chests? Still, thank god that I haven't been seeing every single bandit decked out in Glass armour, if they were that wealthy they wouldn't have any reason to be bandits. But aren't any actual citizens able to afford that sort of thing? I'm thinking of the Daedric stuff in the Dren Villa. Or at least it could be put in a place significance. I still remember happening upon the ruins of Ramimilk at level 4 for the first time, barely surviving the fight and finding that (in those days, valuable) glass dagger stuck in the skeleton's chest on the altar, and then the Wizard's Staff. I'd much rather have some dungeons contain nothing of value and others contain really cool stuff, rather than every dungeon offering a passel of average levelled loot.
Wow, I am really rambling here. Uh...wow, everything I've said so far just relates to items and treasure hunting. I guess it's something I really enjoy, and it affects a major element of the game, the excitement from adventure. Otherwise, maybe I'm just not sure about my opinion on the other stuff yet. I'm not qualified to talk about the quests or how long or short they are, for example, since I haven't completed a single questline. I've already made posts and a thread about how boring I thought Skyrim's creatures were (though at least they made them all Northern-like), and other people have brought it up. A lot of the changes that Skyrim made, I actually like. Athletics/acrobatics...it doesn't bother me too much. I go fast enough, and acrobatics would be handy in some spots but not essential.
A quick thing that bothers me graphics/appearance wise, the really obvious texture tiling on nearer landscapes, slopes and hills and the like. Basically anywhere that you can see from far away that isn't the background, and isn't covered by grass. I'm looking at a gorgeous sunrise from a hilltop, fog-draped mountains in the distance, and then I look at the land directly in front of me and it looks like a patchwork quilt. Also, the river looks terrible from mountaintops.
I've tried playing without the quest arrow but sometimes I just can't because the npc literally will not give me any directions at all. Why would they, since my character suddenly knows where the lost forgotten ruin is? I've concluded in most cases it's a necessary evil.
Since people in Skyrim talk more, it's inevitable that they'll be more repetitive. But apparently, every single shopkeeper in Skyrim is sick of their wares being called "junk" by the other citizens, and prefers to call them "treasures". I shouldn't complain, though, in Morrowind it was worse, and that's even without mentioning what happens after you complete the Main Quest. I guess it's more noticeable now that we have to hear it. Just a minor nuisance.
I guess that's about it with complaints, then. I can't really think of anything else. I like this game and I don't regret a penny of the $40 I spent on it (Steam holiday sale). I'll probably come back more irritated later. And I apologise for this novel of a post.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
The lack of people in cities. The cities in their own right are beautiful. But they're small, and they have population the size of a village. While I do understand that it was for scale-purposes, the least Bethseda could have done was add generic people like "Nord" Or "High Elf" or just "Mage/Warrior"etc.
Oblivion had a mod for that, crowded cities I believe, and it worked just fine. Heck I'll even pay for it if they decide to revamp cities through DLC.
My other major gripe is the storage system. It is annoying that the game mixes and matches the material. Though in a way it is somewhat realistic as it forces me to use containers specifically for certain purposes. Chests for weapons, wardrobe or armor, and end tables for the misc stuff. But I prefer keeping things in one container so that I don't have to go around my house searching for that one staff/potion.

It is actually a growing, troubling trend on the UESP Forums.
It is not just one-offs.
One member has something negative to say about the game, and a group of pitchfork, torch wielding mobs go on a witchhunt.
This place is becoming one of the least friendly places on the Internets.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
I enjoy being a Necromancer character, and I firmly believe that every named NPC who raises their sword to me is simply inviting me to turn their soul into a magnificently powerful piece of weaponry or equipment once i have separated their head from their body.
In Oblivion I religiously made the trek once every 8 days after buying up all the grand soul gems I could, to ensure that these characters souls would serve me rather than going to Aetherius after their corporeal form had been destroyed. In Skyrim, despite the fact the Mages Guild is gone, I cannot do this. Major bummer.
Also I found the Oblivion DB questline much more satisfying than Skyrim. Virtually every Skyrim mission is this: go here, openly kill a really non challenging opponent, get pulled up by the town guards, tell them to go f*** themselves because you are a thane, they apologise, return to sanctuary for crappy gold reward. It was more fun in Cyrodiil where the opponents were somewhat challenging and you usually had to be stealthy + creative in killing them, plus the quest rewards were awesome.

Look at Dervenin in SI. Look at him in Skyrim. Say no to drugs.
