I think Oblivion was more dumbed down than Skyrim is though. Really. Despite the change in class system, which was pretty much the result (imho) of dumping the godawful levelling system they always had (and everyone always complained about, don't tell me it was good that when you got the "you should rest and meditate" message in Morrowind you had to do a quick calculation whether that was a good idea or you had to quickly sell something to level some random skill to get the perfect multipliers). I'm not into these games for the combat, so maybe that's why it doesn't bother me, but I love the new system. PC master race too, so no Xbox.

But whatever they will lie about the game being finished a year ago, it seems like they spent five years on detailing the world and the tiny sidequests (I bow down to them for the details too), then two months on adding the actual "bigger" questlines, which were good in concept, so they were well thought out... but it seems like the actual coding of them went way too quickly and they never bothered to test what they did, that's why they never noticed all the game-breaking things they left in.

I literally started this account so I could whine about skyrim...
That's depressing, and I hate that I think I've said far more things about the negative sides of Skyrim than its positives :/

1. If you're two-shotting things like dragons, you should either stop using Smithing, or up your difficulty, or both. I agree that the game is too easy, but, IMO it's too easy for the wrong reasons. But, I like two-shotting things, one because I don't like drawn out DPS races, and two because it's more realistic. Things tend to die when you hit them over the head with greatswords one or twice:lol:
As far as dragons go... yeah, they kind of reach their difficulty ceiling a little soon... provided they ever actually land to let you hit them.

2. If you used the Restoration Potion exploit to get such high Magic resistance (I can't picture how else you did it) then you really don't have grounds to complain in that respect. Otherwise I completely agree that the strongest armors and weapons are far too near in reach (and not artifacts, like they should be), but, again, the simplest solution is to just not use OP gear.

3. God, I hate the kill cams so much  Right with you here.

4. I'm not overly dissatisfied with the new system, but I definitely miss Classes... and although I never used polearms myself, being spoiled by Dark Souls has made me want to ask why Beth couldn't have included at least one spear and/or halberd.

5. Beth threw out the more novel artifacts for some goofy reason, and everything else pales compared to normal Smith'd gear... I don't get it either. Getting rid of katana/ dai-katana/ etc. is just more of that "streamlining" thing.

6. I can't agree that the landscape in general is boring. I'm not overly-partial to snow, but generally think Skyrim looks incredible (I'm a total fool for the largely disliked "standard fantasy land", though).
If I felt like fighting bears and large cats, I could drive no more than 3 hours from my house to do this in real life, and the combat would surely be harder.
If you ever want to throw on some chainmail and go fight wolves with swords, give me a ring
I want things unseen,
I completely agree. Modern tech could allow for such amazing scary monsters. Things that dwell in shadow, come out of the very walls, etc.
they have reduced the variety of enemies to NOTHING. Bear, Cavebear, Icebear??? Troll, Frost Troll??
It's almost like a horribly-implemented spin on what I was hoping they'd do. I wouldn't mind seeing similar enemies with different elemental resistances (a la Diablo) to keep players on their toes. Sigh- but, We all already know how much Bethy loves their pallet-swaps.

7. This is the worst magic system so far I think. I didn't think they could to worse to me than Oblivion... I was wrong.

8. On one hand, I can see why they wouldn't want us stacking the same enchantments on several pieces of equipment ("No, you'll break the game with Smithing! not Enchanting this time around!") On the other hand, it's just ridiculous that I can only put Fortify Health on my cuirass and not my shoes if I'm so inclined.

9. I never noticed Alchemy leveling particularly slow, but, I know! >turn game on >walk to Dragon's Reach >level 30

10. Iiiiiii have to disagree here. Although I don't really like some of the shouts, there are a couple that put Magic, and just about everything else, to shame.

11. More of that pallet-swapping goodness. With there being such a vast amount of NPCs though, I won't complain. I mean, c'mon, can you think of a game that's done it better?

12. Skyrim's marriage is to Fable's marriage what Skyrim's finishers are to Dragon Age's finishers.
Sad.

DorostheConqueror wrote:I'm just pointing out the facts, facts which I think we can all agree on. Skyrim has been very clearly designed for the XBox, and for very obvious reasons. Whether this is a sign of progress or the slow choking death of a once amazing series, I'll leave to you and your own better judgement.
Where I agree that console game development hinders advancements in PC games, Skyrim has been nothing short of a complete improvement over morrowind and oblivion. They got rid of the aweful things that made oblivion / marrowind terrible (like the leveling system) and revamped it, and then added things that make character development much more interesting (perk trees for example). Combined with a better story telling experience, better graphics, and much less buggy gameplay at release (compared to marrowind / oblivion) Skyrim is nothing short of a huge success. (and the sales numbers combared to marrowind / oblivion make that completely obvious).

Sure, if the game was solely designed for PC, it would be a better. That's common sense. But game developers need to find a middle ground now a days between console and PC support to gain a good return on their investment, and Skyrim imo found a perfect balance.

They got rid of most of the brilliant things that made Morrowind and Oblivion so awesome, too. And even where there was room for improvement, i.e. the leveling system, what we got in it's place actually wound up being WORSE, i.e. the leveling system. You can't tell me that a system where you can't level non-combat skills without scaling monsters is "better", nor can you claim that the perk system, which locks characters into a very narrow range of usable skills and prevents any character from ever fully exploring more than a third of the skills the game has to offer, is anything but an unmitigated disaster.

You won't get any argument from me re: Skyrim's success, though. Bethesda knew the XBox market would gobble it up and they'd make a killing; that's exactly why they did what they did, and that's exactly why the franchise will keep getting worse and worse until it's nothing more than Halo with swords.

But at least we've still got Paradox and Minecraft.

I agree fully with DorostheConqueror, sadly the TES series is going into 'all the console style' which I highly dislike. It was clearly visible in Oblivion but in Skyrim it is just awful. Nothing against console players but c'mon, why TES...

All of my major complaints are primarily relegated to the quests, though I do have a few nitpicks about other aspects of the game.

My minor nitpicks are that shouts are mostly useless, particularly the higher level you get to. I was quite disappointed when I learned my final word for Fire Breath and yet my Yor-Tool-Shul did not spit a gout of fire in front of my, like a dragon, but instead belched a single large-ish ball of fire. Oh well, it was more for me to feel like I actually had some kinship with the dragons more than I was expecting it to be super awesome. A minor letdown.

As a major fan of the Thief games and the original Deus Ex, I play an archer/stealth character, and so the enormous improvements to archery and bows in Skyrim continues to keep the game fun for me. However, that is tempered by the massive failure of the entire Thieve's Guild quest line (and a less massive, though notable, failure of the Dark Brotherhood quest line).

Before I get into my TG rant, I feel I must mention why I found the original Deus Ex's gameplay so compelling. For the uninitiated, it had 4 difficulty settings: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Realistic. Realistic offered the most entertainment and challenge for my style of gaming, though it was by no stretch actually realistic. You could kill nearly anything with the starting pistol in a single shot... if you hit them in the head. But the enemies could do the same to you. It also rewarded nearly any style of play through; be it stealth, full-auto spray-and-pray, non-lethal (just a baton and tranq darts), etc. etc. And to some extent, Skyrim captures some of that. The failing in Skyrim is of course the crafting skills, which allow for godmode without the use of any cheats or exploits. I for one do not abuse the crafting skills, and I play exclusively in clothes. Armor rating of zero from the moment I got my manacles cut off. But more "difficulty" options would be an excellent thing.

My biggest complaint is the Thieve's Guild. It fails hard from the moment you wander into the sewer-bar the louts call home. Few of the characters are even remotely likable (though I do have a soft spot for Delvin Mallory), and all of them are inept in the extreme. You embarrass their prodigy in your opening assignment, which doesn't seem to raise any eyebrows. In oblivion, you could join the TG in heavy armor and no stealth skills, but you wouldn't get very far. In Skyrim you are almost rewarded for not utilizing stealth. After my first character, I made a point to butcher everyone even peripherally involved with every TG mission and it never even got mentioned. Even the horrible radiant quests to boost the TG presence in other cities don't require any form of subterfuge, skill, or sneakiness. Just take number jobs or jobs to wreck up a place and, viola, you're somehow a master thief. The entire questline is a massive disappointment even before the whole Nightingale abomination is introduced, when even a pretense of being thieves is abandoned, and you're suddenly some kind of goofy ninja avenger. There is no incentive to play like a thief, and failing that there isn't even negative incentive to not play like one.

As far as the DB quests went, I do miss having special mission directives to make the killings look like accidents, or make it extra gruesome, or whatnot.

PC or Console... Either way I still say it's a freak'n awesome game. I totally support the move/direction that TES is taking. Again, if you can dump hundreds of hours into a game these days, it gets my tick.
PC has modders... it seems the majority of posters [&@%!]'n and moan'n are Morrowind-PCers. Learn how to mod and fix the issues. If that's too hard... pick back up your fork and eat the damn cake...

"newborn players" of Skyrim who like the game for illegitimate reasons

Honestly, I've heard 20 people say they got hooked with the elder scrolls series because they thought Skyrim had better graphics than Modern Warfare 3 without even saying a decent word about the storyline or gameplay as well as claiming skyrim beats both morrowind and oblivion.

Oh, and the ridiculously long waits in between for the game world(s) to load. It's just a little too much to wait 20 seconds to load up a shop map.

But along with me saying that, I don't care for the fact they simplyfied weapons again, Todd's excuse for not adding more weapon types was to make the ones they already have created more in depth.
But the problem with that is the fact that none of the happens have much depth, besides blades.
I love maces, and see all of the crappy, poorly made finishers compared to the better well made ones with great swords and regular swords alike.
The sword even has your camera move then you unsheathe it, it's beautful, but they could have done that with other weapons too.
Plus, the fact that the weapon in your left hand just appears their is ridiculous.
Same with staffs, why aren't they on your back?
I get complaining about the game, but some people need to give it a break, in my opinion at least.
Regards.

The dragons are not epic enough. The elder dragons are not that much better. The ancient ones are getting there.
More Named, tougher dragons would be great.
the main quest line can be finished in quite a hurry if you choose to do so. (even on expert) master is now keeping things interesting at lvl 50+..
crazy amounts of enchantments and mulitpliers can be game breaking..
ie; dual wielding 300+ damage one handed weapons plus procs, 1,000,000+ damage bows plus procs,
maxing out light armor @ the heavy armor max amount should NOT be possible, etc..

just to name a few. :)

I'd totally be up for a steampunk Elder Scrolls. Assuming they also brought back all the crap they took out to appease the XBox market. Skyrim steampunk would probably be unacceptable, simply because of how far off base the series has gone. But Morrowblivion, or even Morrowrim steampunk? Sure, why not? I'll take two Dwemer Riveted Pauldrons and a pair of Soul Gem Artificer's Lenses, please. Hold the two-handed rapier; I think I'll go with the clockwork elemental cannon today.

Also, is that show still on? Talk about a televised metaphor for the Elder Scrolls!

Maybe if you have played games for more than the last 10 years you remember when games were actually difficult. I don't think anyone is asking a lot of a company, when they are simply asking leave some of what you used to have in the game in. There are so few complaints about what they should take out, just what they should have kept. Everyone is reveling in past success and bummed that this game wasn't quite the game they thought it would be.
Some complaints are legitimate, others here are so lame that they are not. For example, everyone that's complaining about Spell Crafting not being in game, that's not a legitimate complaint, especially since magic has been done the best in Skyrim out of all the TES games. (Barring the ability to make spells completely free to cast, a problem which can be remedied by playing with some restraint, and soon, a little modding).

I agree that newer games are following a trend of being "easier" then games we old timers are accustomed too. But that's just the nature of single player games (in fact, few single player games in history, even very old ones, have been what I would consider "difficult"). Which is why many of us competitive gamers are hooked on multiplayer games. Other humans will always give you a far better challenge then any AI bot.

LOL it's funny that you call Marrowind / oblivion's leveling system worst then Skyrims. Most of the monsters in skyrim don't really "scale", at least not to the point where oblivion mobs did. In fact, I found that skyrim's system was too forgiving on leveling up non-combat skills. At lvl 40 you can still run into lvl 9 bandits that die in 1 hit on master difficulty. The perk system also is a great achievement for the TES series, aside from a few skills having "useless perks" (like lockpicking), it allows for much better character development. As for your absurd "locking your character into a very narrow range of usable skills", wtf are you even babbling about? Think about it in terms of replay value. You seem upset because you can't have a character who is master-skill level in every skill with all perks unlocked? That takes away the entire point of character development. If you did every single side quest in game(not radiant rng quests) and main quest, you character should naturally hit about lvl 45 to 65 depending on how many skills you choose to use, which would allow for tons of perks and character development, but leave enough left over for a second complete playthrough using a new style that would add to the replay experience. And if that doesn't make you happy you can always enable every perk via the console command, so just do that ffs lol.

Skyrim is far from "halo with swords".
Skyrim fixed pretty much everything that sucked about marrowind and oblivion. They added a rewarding character development system that wasn't boring and tedious like marrowind/oblivion, and they provided tons of content in a great looking world with tons of replay value. It amazes me that a thread like this even exists. lol

What are you talking about?? Being able to create and name completely custom spells was one of things that separated TES games from every single other RPG. Could you create your own spells in Baldur's Gate? Any D&D rule-using game for that matter? The Might&Magic series? WoW? the Souls games? Two Worlds? Diablo? Any JRPG ever made?

I think it's weird that a month ago, everyone was bawing that Skyrim was too hard. Being easy to exploit, which Skyrim certainly is, isn't the same thing as being too easy though, and that's definitely not an invalid complaint.
