Firearms????
I know it hasn't been mentioned in lore or in any games. But does anyone think somewhere in Tamriel or Nirn someone has invented an affective firearm machination, or something along the lines of late medieval (irl) firearms. Something based of the Dwemer machinations in particular perhaps??? Anyone have any ideas about this, and whether it would sound right in the world of Elder Scrolls?

Re: Firearms????
I Don't think there'd be as much of a demand for such weapons due to the existence of magic.

Re: Firearms????
There is a reference somewhere that the ships of the wayrest (I am not sure if it is the right city/country) sunk in a war due to their heavy cannons but this reference is if I recall correctly from daggerfall.

Re: Firearms????
Mucksponges look awfully like cannons.. maybe they'll be used for making cannons in the future!
The only thing I can think of are the cannons and Dwemer Crossbow thingies.

Re: Firearms????
I think if firearms were to be included it would have to be in a 15th century swashbuckly style, it would ruin the series' image if done so in a different manner.

It doesn't seem too active a discussion, seem so it's in the archive. And i'm not one for sifting through pages and pages of people ranting at each other about guns. Although if the same happens in this discussion...well i'll be damned.

Re: Firearms????
The basic things are, there is no real need for cannons/firearms as enough people have atleast a basic knowledge of magic. And further they even have taken away our loved crossbows from the last two games, so if the people on Nirn aren't smart enough to use and make crossbows how should the make gun powder and weapons to use it^^.

Re: Firearms????
But the crossbows have been taken out due to Bethesda wanting to remove variety from the game and so forth ranty ranty rant ect. there has been no lore reason why they have been taken out of the game/lore. So, really who knows somewhere in Hammerfell, someone may be trying to devise a way they could use Dwemer technology to advance crossbows to something to the ilk of a firearm.

We archived all pre-release talk, but you can still skim through it to get ideas. Sort of like the one I'm just throwing out now:Crepe the Ashlander wrote:It doesn't seem too active a discussion, seem so it's in the archive. Guns aren't really the TES way. They're typically left out of fantasy, if you want to think about the genre traditionally. Sure, the dwarves - in this case, the Dwemer - are always technological and making pretty and magical trinkets underground, but mass artillery warfare? Not really necessary, or wanted, or imagined.
Besides, you can't assume that the world of Tamriel develops the same way ours does, has the same desires, or dreams the same dreams. Don't get sucked into examining an imaginary world with the knowledge of your own. (Although I have read a book that says this is unlikely, and progressions are always the same - Nonzero by Robert Wright - although it uses game theory to get about to that, but I digress.)
Also, I don't really think this is a lore discussion, so I'm putting it in TES General.

Re: Firearms????
If Tamriel were to have the same progression as our world, they have been using swords and spears for a mighty long while now, but who is there to say somehow someone may eventually create a primitive firearm (I really hope if they (highly unlikely mind I do agree) do include firearms it would have to be in a musket/swashbuckling manner).

Re: Firearms????
Well, catapults have been seen though out the storm cloak, and perhaps the imperial campaign. Also, dwarven centurions seem to have a mega man style arm cannon device that launches destruction spells, most notably fire.

Re: Firearms????
Yes, I remember the super-mega-centurion launcher devices, I got into a spot of bother a lot with them....but, yeah, I had held that out of context, really who knows someone may defeat a centurion might take it's arm off and use it to help with the creation of a firearm of sorts that fires destruction spells. Basically it could be a steam powered magic launcher (firearm in a way) for people that can't be bothered to learn about magic.

Re: Firearms????
I don't think guns would be a good idea in TES, I mean everyone can use magic so why would you need guns?

What if the Thalmor constructed crossbows capable of firing spells? I could see that happening.

Gideon has a point, but oh god...not the Akaviri! Actually that'd be a cool game, but not too much gunpoweder, I reckon it would have to be like a rare thing and rarely expensive and so forth.
And why is everyone saying not needing guns because you have magic? Some people don't have the capability to use magic, yet they'd be able to pull a trigger or so forth.

Yeah but what about mass armies of peasants and so on, they are not rich enough to recieve special training, and some people may find it hard to get a grasp of magic, after all, if you didn't choose magic as a specialisation or choose some magic skills in morrowind and oblivion, you usually turned out to be crap at magic.

Re: Firearms????
it's the same for guns, hard to do, and unless they made them commone they should cost more then magic.Crepe the Ashlander wrote:Yeah but what about mass armies of peasants and so on, they are not rich enough to recieve special training, and some people may find it hard to get a grasp of magic, after all, if you didn't choose magic as a specialisation or choose some magic skills in morrowind and oblivion, you usually turned out to be crap at magic.
preety much magic = cheeper, more powerful, you can learn form a lot of pepole
Guns= cost a lot, take for ever to load, if they do it right it would be very hard to use
Your forgeting evrey one would have to learn to aim, and pay for a very exspeivsie thing, that hardily works, unless they go and skip a few hunrders years of gun making, even then it still cost a lot.

Won't happen. Guns are not "fantasy" unless you're talking "Final Fantasy", and nobody wants the crowds to scream "THEY'VE TURNED TEH ELDAR SCROLZ INTO WEEABOO CRAP WHARRBAGARLBA$^%@%$%uuu$u%$^!@j%$qHATAHDF".

Re: Firearms????
While it would be interesting (Screw dragons, I've got a blunderbuss.), I don't see it happening. Guns would just be out of place in Tamriel, not to mention hard to explain storywise. And besides, unless you were nuts and wanted to make an Elder Scrolls game set in the modern era, guns would be far less practical than a bow and arrow, due to the low rate of fire of firearms before the mid-1800's.

Re: Firearms????
What if like some Deadra came to Tamriel and said, "Here." And dropped a stack of guns on the floor.
Yeah... I would like to see some sort of gun but I don't see Beth adding it to TES. But if they found a kick-ass way to bring it in...
