Skooma. Only boost stamina a little and no negative effects. Mods will hopefully change it back to how we know it.

D'oh!
You mark my words. Someday, when the novelty value has worn off and everyone's treating Skyrim as badly as they did Oblivion, you'll look on me as a visionary and a prophet.

I'm thinking Skyrim is doing well criticism-wise partly because it's being compared to Oblivion, whereas Oblivion partly was ravaged thanks to being compared to Morrowind.
But one thing I hate about Skyrim is it's too blasted cold!

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
This may be true. While I still think Oblivion was better, as a whole, than Morrowind, it's no secret that Morrowind had a much purer, open-world-roleplaying feel. Skyrim is just Oblivion on cocaine; it improves on Oblivion's successes (well, most of them. Some of them. Alright, a few of them) but it also compounds Oblivion's failures. If Morrowind-Oblivion was a battle between roleplayers and console gamers, then perhaps Oblivion-Skyrim is a battle between console gamers and console gamers who don't like RPGs?Iaius Amaius Heron wrote:I'm thinking Skyrim is doing well criticism-wise partly because it's being compared to Oblivion, whereas Oblivion partly was ravaged thanks to being compared to Morrowind.
Actually, it's funny you should mention that, because one thing I don't like is that it's not blasted cold enough. Apparently, the tundra bits have never heard of snow, even in the dead of winter, and how cold can the northern holds be, really, if you can swim around in the ocean for hours without getting hypothermia and frostbite? Couldn't they have at least made it so that, unless you had high frost resistance and access to heat sources, you'd slowly freeze to death? Oh, wait, that'd be an added layer of complexity, our focus groups say you can't sell XBox titles with that. But one thing I hate about Skyrim is it's too blasted cold!

Doing well Criticism-wise...??? Interesting... gaming stores are getting quite a bit of returns on Skrim... especially on the PS3 side of the house. I read it the other day, and went to a gamestop just to see for myself, and sure enough, they have quite a few Used Skyrim Games... mostly PS3.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
I don't know, Oblivion pretty much stopped existing for me once I tried out Morrowind (yes, I went backwards), but I like Skyrim, and I say it's actually a better game than (vanilla) Morrowind. BUT.
There's some serious little details hidden in random caves and settlements, that I bet took quite some time and planning to implement while they knew very well that the majority of the players will never even register them. WHY did they not apply the same detailing to the main story? It was good, it had tension, they included the different sides you could take, the people actually feel alive, I can love or hate them, because they all have their faults... but once you are through with that, and (ok, probably just the Morrowind fanatics) try to gather some information on who to trust and why and what happened... there's no information. No background books, no one to explain to you that YES, the dragon did this and this, or the other side jumping on you and saying NO, he didn't do that... nothing, save a short conversation. And the "other main story"... which is the "main story" anyway? I just can't understand why are there two main stories, when it would hit so much harder (and be more awesome, and realistic) if they were combined. And again, the same non-information: yes, you can read about Ulfric... but you can't get HIS version of the story. I want to know what I'm getting into, dammit!
And also, the same fault as Oblivion: you can finish every guild with little problems. I finished the College again, without using any spells above novice level. VERY realistic. I want something like they had in Morrowind (though I wouldn't mind if it was a little less drastic): you need to have some of your relevant skills levelled up to a set number to advance, otherwise they'd just say: OK, you are very nice and you helped us a lot, but you see, you just aren't a mage. Kay?

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
Doesn't that happen with a lot of games? I figured people are prone to buying them, running through them, and returning them; I've been acquainted with a few people who do that. I personally buy games because I'm a fan of the series and want to enjoy them, but I know that there are gamers out there who aren't in it for, say, the return of The Lusty Argonian Maid. Personally, I just like the game for what it is to me so far, which is another TES game. They each have their own pros and cons to me, and that will never change.Jeff wrote:Doing well Criticism-wise...??? Anyway.
You know what I hate about Skyrim? Is it the puny horses or those god forsaken hagravens? Is it the loss of my classes and birth signs? Sure, sure. But you know what really gets my goat? Two things, actually:
1) There are no damn pants anywhere.
2) There are not enough naked Nords, unless they all learnt fashion in the last two hundred years - and given the lack of pants mentioned above, I seriously doubt this. Morrowind really had me going there...

The Lusty Argonian Maid the new scene is the best thing in Skyrim imho. I hope we will get an amfitheater in the Elder Scrolls VI imagine that

From what I've heard, Skyrim on the PS3 did badly bug-wise, so maybe that's one reason. Were these returns tallied during the 1.2 patch fiasco?

Amen. I'd sell my kidney if I thought it would go to better use on my bills. That's also true; learnt this first hand in my business, where we do a lot of big sales on TV and such. But I also wouldn't be surprised if all the frustrating glitches with the patches prompted some of those returns (though how big a percent I can't say; my game hasn't bugged out once).JoeyDestructo wrote:Jeff wrote:Doing well Criticism-wise...??? The thing I hate about Skyrim? The lack of any real technological improvements. Over 200 years since Oblivion, and we're still at the same technological level. No, I'm not asking for guns, but at least some SIGN of change.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
The UI. Still. For ever. The UI. I realize why I felt(feel) like it's "futuristic", as I called it: Apple. It's just like an iPod. But graphically, apart from being a slap to the face of an immersion-breaker to me, I hate, venomously hate, how it takes anywhere between five to ten seconds (sometimes longer) to actually 'finish opening' after I press B. And I've installed the game for crying out loud.
Need to see the map, wait five or ten seconds. Oops, I needed to change equip first, wait five or ten more seconds. I wonder what my Two-Handed is? B. Oops, I could have pressed Left, Up (WTH? -_-). Gotta wait five or ten more seconds.
Streamlined? My butt is better streamlined.
The removal of Classes, even more Spell effects, and just about the entire Enchanting process, which bears the worst parts of the former point. Restrictions on what can be enchanted with what effects, and far fewer effects to even choose from? No thanks.
I hate that every single dungeon is "conveniently" circular. They could pour all the effort they want into hand-drawing and placing every single rock of every single cave and castle for all I care. All that uniqueness is lost when every single dungeon is just a walk in a darkly-lit circle.
That weapons have only two normal attack animations. Back and forth. Back and forth. Can you say, "monotonous"? C'mon, even Oblivion had more combat animations. A little fluidity makes combat look so much better, without awful-looking Dragon Age knock-off finishing moves.
I hate the Dragon Age knock-off finishing moves. Apart from being a painfully unoriginal idea, they clip, load choppily, and a lot of them, to me, just look bad. OtOH, some look okay... but I'd trade them in a heartbeat for a more fluid combat system.
I find the look sensitivity to be far too sluggish. Delicate aiming, for me, is impossible at worst, far more uncomfortable and tedious than the previous two games' at best.
I hate the over-the-shoulder camera. I hated it in Fallout, and I hate it even more in Skyrim. Apart from only being necessary, IMO, in third-person shooters (and only then with the ability to change which shoulder the camera sits over), Skyrim's in particular is too low, and puts too much of my character in the way of what I'm doing. IMO, Beth did it backwards - I want over-the-head out of combat, and, if there need be an over-the-shoulder cam, have that in combat, to facilitate third-person aiming.
Last but not least is just sort of more a problem I have now with Bethesda, which is that I no longer have any faith in the stability of their games. I've never heard of a game with a patch that was better not to download, or DLC that caused so many bugs, or even have I played such buggy games (here's looking at you, Oblivion and FO). Every time I pick up an item I think "is this going to be a quest-related item that fouls up a quest?" or "is entering this dungeon going to foul up a quest?" Geez, the dread I felt to give up my items for the Diplomatic Immunity quest after playing Oblivion and FO:NV is just, sad. I can't think of any other game that's caused me any concerns of that nature, much less as many.

I'd totally be up for a steampunk Elder Scrolls. Assuming they also brought back all the crap they took out to appease the XBox market. Skyrim steampunk would probably be unacceptable, simply because of how far off base the series has gone. But Morrowblivion, or even Morrowrim steampunk? Sure, why not? I'll take two Dwemer Riveted Pauldrons and a pair of Soul Gem Artificer's Lenses, please. Things "advance", not for any market, console, or anything. It all depends on how the developers decide what they want in the game that makes sense. Re: Things you hate about skyrim
Oh, I beg to differ. The "advancements" have everything to do with markets, and, in TES'es case, that market is specifically the XBox one. How could it not be? According to the sales figures, Skyrim's XBox sales dwarf it's sales on the PS3 and Windows combined! Whaddaya think that means?
Now, you can feel free to interpret the developers "decision" to water down the gameplay elements and go for a mass marketable, XBox friendly approach however you like- heck, maybe that's a GOOD thing. Game developing isn't an art, it's a business, and evidently business is good! Zenithar knows I'd love to a stock holder right about now. But facts are facts, and we do no justice by refusing to acknowledge them.
And steampunk would totally fit. Just bring back the Dwemer, or have some humans rediscover the lost arts of Reason and Logic.

Re: Things you hate about skyrim
I'm really satisfied with Skyrim overall especially because they add a huge amount of beards to choose but more importantly no calculating attribute points anymore. But my one problem is I can't name my poison "Drop Dead Gorgeous Poison" anymore. Thankfully the armor can be named.
