Magic Resistance

Post by mjordan »

Do the three Magic Resistance perks in the alteration tree provide a constant 30% magic resistance? Or do they instead only apply toward spells that are actively cast? I will be making a guy spec'd primarily for combat, but it seems to me that this much magic resistance would be worth 5 perks for any playstyle. So, if this is a constant effect, then I will budget for the perks. If not, I will spend the perks elsewhere.

The 30% Resist is equivalent to wearing a piece of gear with a 30% Resist enchantment; It shows up constantly under Active Effects.
You don't need to activate it yourself. I think that's what you were asking?

Great question. I haven't thought about this thus far. Well worth the perks for my character.

Interestingly, i've yet to come across a Resist Magic item to aid this alteration perk.

There is an item with a unique Resist Magic Enchantment that you receive while trying to become Thane at a particular city.
Spoiler:
At Solitude, when you finish the quest The Wolf Queen Awakened, you will receive the Shield of Solitude, which has a unique Resist Magic enchantment, meaning it can be dual enchanted with a regular Resist Magic enchantment. It is a leveled item, but if you disenchant it at any level, you should get the same base enchantment.

So if a Breton born under the Lord sign had these perks he would have 80% resist magic?

...and since Magic Resistance is capped at 85%, this free's your enchantments up for other effects.
