Yeah he can veto the bill, it's in the constitution somewhere. Congress can vote to override the presidential veto.

The Tom wrote:- It seems to me that Congress and the Senate are made up mostly of people who themselves admit that they do not use the internet, and that the President is perhaps more 'in touch' with the opposition to the bill and is more likely to listen.
This is an excellent point and was brought up somewhere in an article I read, I'll see if I can find it. You're right basically, they generally don't use the internet. Regarding Obama being more in touch, I'd rather not comment. I don't necessarily mean that negatively either, it's just that I'm not sure and I can't word my answer without sounding harsh towards Dear Leader.
The Tom wrote:- Why are the proponents saying that there has been no real opposition to the bill, that there is no basis in fact for any disagreement? What the hell do they think Wikipedia are doing with their planned 'knowledge blackout'?
I dunno dude. You have a link? My guess would be that in the court of law (and in any legislation) you have to use retard language. It's not about being right; it's about speaking the language. This is part of the reason why you should never represent yourself in a court case.
The Tom wrote:Surely it can't be the case that if a user posts a link to a copyrighted picture on, say, whitehouse.gov, then that website is under threat simply because it 'hosts' a link to illegal material? The White House's own site?
Right now, under todays legislation, you may receive a "cease and desist" letter for that. This is under the umbrella of copyright protection which protects the individual.

So if Mucro does a google image search for cars, and sees his pic, he can have his attorney send that (cease and desist) letter. The website owner can choose to ignore Mucro, in which he will go to court. From there the court decides the appropriate action. Ya know, innocent until proven guilty and all that.

This bill will grant the power to shut down a site prior to the court case.

Here's the problem with that: One, it's not right. Two, there is a huge backlog in court cases. Yours may be two years from the time you realize there's a problem. If your website is your job, now you're without work and must go find a job.

Also think about the fact that if your site brings in $36K a year, and that is seized for 2 years due to a court case, you're out $72K. Most folks have more than one site, and if they all get seized you're out hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Someone like myself, this is my trade. I'd have to be a broke bag boy or something if I had to get another job.

That makes things clearer. Thank you. *shudder*

Looks like my next port of call is UK copyright law.

I think comparing SOPA to Chinese internet blocking would severely diminish its support in Congress.

Someone needs to challenge this on TV. It's sad, but the American people will pay more attention to a chat show host, or somebody, coming out on national TV and saying this is wrong.

That's the point. Somebody high profile needs to go on TV and campaign against it. This whole thing has been very underhanded - it's time to drag it out into the light.

What's funny is that Hilary Clinton does not support SOPA, and yet I've heard nothing on TV about her and her stance. She'd certainly garner a lot of attention, IMO.

A good 20 minute video about can be found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhwuXNv8fJM

It talks about how Universal has already gotten out of control, before SOPA even came into play.

I linked that on page 2. TotalBiwscuit has taken quite a stance on this as of late, which is good. More people he makes aware, means the more will take notice and make their fanbase aware; and then hopefully those fans will spread the word in their own means.

Also, Ashton Kutcher created an Anti-SOPA, guess I can't really associate him with Michael Kelso anymore...

SOPA is Nonsense.

Post by Da_BossMaN69 »

I can't believe this law is still under considertation It's literally an act of censorship.
What the hell is this country coming to?

Moderators' note: Please be mature and civil in this discussion, as you are elsewhere on the forum. Remember to use facts rather than emotions and to cite where possible. Today is a day of protest against SOPA and PIPA, about which you may learn about today from almost any news source, and this is what the discussion is about. Please note that neither has passed through any bodies of government. Thank you!

Some articles in the news today:
New York Times - Protest on Web Uses Shutdown to Take On Two Piracy Bills
BBC News - Sopa: Sites go dark as part of anti-piracy law protests

SOPA has not been passed. Plus, the law would take time to be implemented.

Never mind I don't know if this is legit or not, but the website is now on strike?

Seriously, even more of a no move than SOPA itself.

It just leads me to some petition, asking me to fight the law I mean I would, but not enough to have the govt. lock up my computer because I'm branded as a pirate or whatever nonsense they could do.

The OP is probably talking about a protest shutdown. As in, his website was shut down to protest SOPA.

Alright fine, but can we all not resort to instant name calling simply because I got jumpy.

Anyway I think this law is the definition of corruption. I don't mean to sound far left too, when I say that. Im not the kind of person who would usually say things or partake in anything like such movements like the Occupy Wallstreet, just to be clear.

But the fact remains we all know this is pushed by the big companies who are just upset that they're not making billions when they're only making millions, which for some reason is such a 'huge' problem for them.

Google put up some stuff. Wikipedia is having a blackout for 24hrs I think. Reddit for 12.
I also blacked out my Tumblr for 24 hours.
Plus I signed two petitions to my Congressman. I know it's small, but I don't see the overall good that SOPA and PIPA will do for the internet. Especially handing over a lot of power to the government regarding internet content = no bueno.

First, everyone be civil or I shall lock this faster than you can say "SOPA." Second, for discussion sake, please use citations when discussing this. Please do not overreact. We're all adults here - and if you're not, please try to act like one temporarily.

Also of interest, perhaps you would enjoy reading the White House's blog, particularly the article titled "Obama Administration Responds to We the People Petitions on SOPA and Online Piracy". The bill has been given some serious doubts...so you're pretty safe, I would think, but not quite out of the water. Piracy is a problem. Web creation and information is not. The problem is finding a bill that represents that.
