Who do your Characters Worship?

Post by N'wah Nern »

When roleplaying in any of the TES, do your characters worship any of the divines or daedra or Tribunal? How do you show their devotion?

My Morrowind Character worshipped the Tribunal until
Spoiler:
he found out they were mortal
My Oblivion character kinda served Sithis but religion wasn't really the important part of the Dark Brotherhood for her. Of course later she only worshipped herself.

My Skyrim character is divided between worshiping Talos and Hircine. He's a werewolf and he wants to spend eternity with
Spoiler:
Adela the Huntress
but he doesn't exactly care for the actual killing, feeding, and hunting part of being a werewolf.

My Daggerfall character worships Akatosh (and Talos, except Talos isn't in Daggerfall) because he's very patriotic and loyal to the Empire.
Do you mind? I'm doing the fishstick. It's a very delicate state of mind.

My Skyrim character Rain worshipped no one in particular but always paid her respects to the Daedric princes. She doesn't really care about the Tribunal or the nine divines but the princes, they're tangible enough for her to respect.

This is a fantastic and unique subject, so well done! And a good question for the lore minded among us, too.

My Morrowind character, being my first to the series, was not particularly religious. I did not roleplay him with any respect or thought, first or second, toward any deities, and I think it suited him. After all, he was a brash Nord dragged from prison and abandoned in what looked like the god forsaken and unfriendly island of Vvardenfell. I imagine he felt like neither the Nine nor the Princes nor the Three gave a damn about him, and rightfully so.
Spoiler:
And I imagine he took the whole being the Nerevarine business with a grain of salt, until he chanced upon the Tribunal - but, then again, getting wrapped up in the old "Whodunit?" of Nerevar's death and the peculiar circumstances surrounding the twice-mortals and once-gods that were the Tribunal, he probably didn't give a hoot. Which suited me and him just fine.
My Oblivion character was a Dunmer of House Redoran lineage, which would have made him a pious Tribunal worshiper. Of course,
Spoiler:
given the fact that he witnesses the Nerevarine and the destruction of the Tribunal in the few short years before Oblivion, and given the disappearance of Vivec, who was probably the last shred of any evidence of his once-was religion,
he surrendered to a cautious respect for the Princes and the Nine. Of course, considering what he just witnessed in his home, on top of what he would witness at the end of the Third Era -
Spoiler:
that being the Daedric Prince of Destruction and other nasty things come to picnic on the souls of Nirn and the Avatar of Akatosh come to stop that from happening
- you got to figure the poor mer is awfully confused as to what the hell anyone would want with him anyway. And that's before the whole Shivering Isles episode.

And my beloved Skyrim character is an Imperial, so that would make him a worshiper of the Nine, short and sweet. I've got a soft spot for Stendarr so I'd put my money on that as his divine of choice, which would be fitting for a warrior.

(Conclusion: man, do the TES games really mess with religion.)
Huzzah!

I've never done that with characters which is strange because I roleplay everything else. I guess most them don't really worship anyone (like myself in real life) but will somehow involve themselves in otherworldly powers to either help or hinder.
A hero can be anyone, even a man doing some as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know the world hadn't ended.

Mekorosi (my oblivion character), being born under the Shadow and raised as a Shadowscale, naturally worshipped Sithis.

As a rather submissive slave for most of his life in Morrowind, Jorim-Ba believed in whatever his dunmer masters told him to: Namely the Triburnal.

Being raised by an unreliable drunkard of a father in Skyrim and later on, an aged Nord blacksmith, Neerus knew little of the Hist and prayed to the Eight Divines (and Talos in secret) - accepting Zenithar as his patron, as he dedicated himself to hard work in order to support himself and his sister.

He often created a rather crude depiction of Zenithar on the sheaths or leather grips of weapons he made.

I don't know near enough about the lore to make an informed decision/ opinion, but based on experience and what I can recall, if I were to RP a religious type (or find myself in Nirn, as is discussed around here sometimes) I think I'd lean toward Kynareth, or Azura.

My current character is the first one I'm roleplaying to any extent and she doesn't follow any religion. I'm not sure you can be an atheist in a world where you can go and have a chat with a living god, but she comes close. She is and always has been her own woman and she despises people who lazily wait for the higher power to come and solve their problems. She's a Nord, so she deslikes the Temple even more than the Imperial Cult and won't even step inside one, unless she absolutely has to (and then she'll make snide remarks to passing priests and try to steal something, just to spite them).

My characters always worship Azura and have great respect for Hircine.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

I have a Nord ranger in Skyrim who worships Hircine, and to a lesser extent Sithis. She believes the beast blood is a blessing, and uses it to slay and devour the Thalmor, who she views as a plague on her homeland.

My Skyrim characters:
Bhaal the Orc serves Malacath... (who else of course!)
Eldin the Breton worships Mehrunes Dagon (because of the extensive use of Dremoras as servants :P)
Mithridates the Redguard is a kind of atheist
Feanor the Altmer worships Magnus
Skyrim almost makes me wish for a nuclear winter!

Through the games, i've always used the same bloodline (damn lucky Dunmer bloodline, Nerevarine, Champion, now Dovahkiin!). Anyway:

Nerevarine (Morrowind): Andarys Rethan - Even though he is a member of the imperial influenced House Hlaalu, he worships the Tribunal.
Spoiler:
When he discovers they are mortal, he no longer worships them, but respects them, he felt lost without their guidance, but eventually learnt to deal with it, and for the rest of his life he worshipped no other deity
Champion of Cyrodiil (Oblivion): Foryn Rethan - Placed in Cyrodiil as the Hlaalu ambassador to the Emperor, put in prison by corrupt guards who were bribed by a rival Hlaalu councilor. Even though in his lifetime the Tribunal lived, he used his ambassadory to Cyrodiil to get away from Tribunal worship, he found the religion too "preachy". He now worships St Veloth/Ancestor Worship so therefore has a good respect for The Anticipations, he also respects the Nine Divines but not as much as The Anticipations.

Dovahkiin (Skyrim): Belvyn Rethan - He is in Skyrim as a Hlaalu Ambassador to the Imperial forces in Solitude, following on from his father. He worships St Veloth/Ancestor Worship and respects The Anticipations, the only divines he respects are Akatosh, Stendarr and Talos (but he hides the respect of Talos just in case Thalmor see this as full worship of him).

In Oblivion I never truly thought about specifically worshiping any specifically, but I usually went to Talos's shrine the most.

In Skyrim, I would worship Talos, as I was a Nord; And Arkay, I kill in his name to aid him in keeping balance between life and death.
