Random Thief Attack

So I was playing one of my high level characters and was walking around riverwood when I was just randomly attacked by someone called Thief. He was a very good fighter and probably would have killed me but a guard started fighting him as well and we were able to kill him. I looted him and all he had was a few hundred gold on him.

Has anyone else just been randomly attacked like this?

I wasn't attacked personally but I saw Thief get mobbed by the population of Riften for some unknown reason, probably stealing.

Those guy's pay me 600 gold every time I see them like a BOSS

NPCs named Thief, Redguard, and Khajiit, have all randomly come up and attacked me. Not counting the Thalmor Justicars, Hired Thugs or Assassins.

The thief (holding you up or being caught by guards) is one of some hundred different random world encounters the game offers.

That said, i have encountered them many times. Every time they have been too arrogant to back off and met a swift death.

About these random world encounters, I'm still wary about accepting a drink from the revelers you find out in the middle of nowhere. I keep thinking they'll slip me a Mickey Finn and I'll wake up two days later on a slow boat to Thras.

It's not like I enjoy walking away from a good party but, if this is indeed a brigands' ambush, I'm not going to let the schmucks get a fair fight.

Aww, to heck with it: next bunch of them I see are going to find themselves with mead flowing out of several new holes in their bellies.

It's a weird world encounter though. if you accept the drink the guy says something then they all walk off down the road to destinations unknown.

It's like they were waiting for us. o_o

I see them in Riften... There was as dead one in the street near the Inn RANDOMLY never saw him die... Then I saw another one leave The Scorched Hammer and THWACK an arrow to the spine...was perfect dead center..I hope that guard got his mead!

I think it might be dealing with the Thieves Guild?

Become leader of the Thieves Guild then when they are on the road and you see them you just walk up to them and talk to them and they pay you 600 gold.

Has anyone else met a challenger?A little after i reached conjuration 100, i get out of breezlehome and a challenger is there, telling me "You call yourself a mage?" and attacking me.Well this time the dremora lords were right. "A challenger is near!"

Been seeing thieves in Riverwood alot lately. One time, he was mobbed by people. While he was killed, during the melee, Alvor the Blacksmith died. Now his shop is no longer available. At another time, a dragon attacked Whiterun and Belethor died - his shop is no longer open. If this keeps up, I will not have anyone to trade with.

I've had this happen a couple of times in Riften. I usually just sit back and watch him get mauled by the city guard and then pick up all his loot.

The high level thief outside riverwood is a glitch.. Infuriating if you ask me. Every new character I make has to die by him at least once.

Theives have a tendecy to get in the way of Unrelenting Force then procceed to impale themselves, on the end of my blade or sleeping with the mudcrabs. The only time i've had a theif in the city was when i did a bit of the Theives guild questline. I think the future you are in the questline, the more active the TG gets.

That doesn't work for me. I'm Guildmaster, and it doesn't matter whether I wear the Guildmaster's armor or the Nightingale's armor or anything else - he still insists I hand over my money and there's no option to say "Dude, you're trying to rob your boss."

Every time I visit Riften a thief is being attacked by the guards. Also I am the leader of the thieves guild and have never received 600 gold from one.

I think I've seen four thieves in Riften so far, in 400 hours of play. One of them ran into the blacksmith's house, so I took a series of amusing pictures and posted them in the photographer's thread.
