Pretty much anything that I like the sound of. I'm a complete music philistine really, for me it's good enough if I just like the sound of it.
But drums. The sound of drums can reach right in and hit straight on my wild side. And I don't mean rock-band type drums, I mean far more basic drums. The sort of sound that goes straight to your primeval-human core and just makes your soul burn with the heat of a thousand suns.
OK, gettin abit carried away now!!!

I often listen to metalcore, moshcore and streetpunk (Casualties for teh win!). Though there are great artists from other genres such as Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen (this is a MUST click), Bob Dylan, and so forth, whom I admire for their lyrical genius. Whilst bands such as Unearth, Tool, .hopesfall., As I Lay Dying, Every Time I Die and Skycamefalling deserve my utmost respect and admiration for their skills as musicians. Tool, As I Lay Dying and Every Time I Die are masterfully skilled lyricists. Plus, Keith Buckley (Every Time I Die, vocalist) is a head-bangin' teacher that the english language at the Virginia Tech university, how kick-butt is that?
Plus, as a drummer myself I can let myself drown deeper in the music I hear.

Ironically, though born and raised in Texas, country music is the last thing I'd ever want to hear. Likewise, the area I grew up in has a significant amount of Spanish/Mexican influence, and while the harmonies aren't exactly repulsive to my ears, neither are they conducive to pleasing my mood. Most of my preferences have been heavily influenced by my immediate family and friends.
I like music ranging from obscure bands like The Magnetic Fields, Superchunk, LCD Soundsystem, Audiobody, and The Octopus Project to mainstream stuff from Green Day, Beck, Marylin Manson, Fatboy Slim, U2, Weezer, and Beck. Oddly enough, the Rome: Total War soundtrack has found its way into my regular playlist.

As long as it has a beat and I can dance to it, I'm in

I'm open-minded about music, but mainly listen to rock/goth/alternative type stuff.
I especially love '80s goth bands, like Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie etc (showing my age!), but if I had to pick my favourite band ever, I'd go for The Doors.
Is it just me, or do the majority of people into RPG and fantasy tend to be on the rock/metal side?

I seem to finally be being joined by other Radiohead fans. This is most definitely a Good Thing.
On a related note, for masser and The Tourist, last night they did a more-or-less-unannounced gig at 93 Feet East in London, a tiny little bar where they could barely fit on the stage. They played the whole of In Rainbows then did an encore of a few tracks from the back catalogue - it's all on Youtube. Jigsaw Falling Into Place, Faust ARP and Videotape are particularly good.

The only two metal albums I love are from my early teens, which are; Megadeth's Rust In Peace, and Sepultura's Chaos A.D. And maybe Ride The Lightning... but that's IT.
Main stuff; electronica (Squarepusher/Autechre), jazz (the usual Blue Note/Columbia greats, to west-coast's finest Chet Baker), and the usual band-stuff who've already been rightly namechecked (Radiohead, Arcade Fire). See also; classic early 90's hiphop, and the mighty Joanna Newsom - who's just the nicest thing ever, possibly not human, but some kind of creation of nature that is only ever good and nice, coming out the speakers into my ears.
I also have a shelf-and-a-bit of what is commonly termed 'pop music' (Britney may now be completely insane, bless her, but Blackout has some truly corking modern goodness on it).
r; I heard about that mini-gig, but I don't know whether I'd have bothered to go there even if I had been down in the Big Smoke. There would've been so many people... but I didn't know it'd made YouTube already - I'll check it out. I'd have requested Permanent Daylight. But I'm guessing they didn't go back that far to a track they hardly ever played..

... if you're into pint sized Californians who sound like 80 year old women with throat cancer and like dropping references to Camus so you know they're ever so clever. I've got both of her albums, and I'm still not sure why I listen to her so much. The Tourist wrote:and the mighty Joanna Newsom - who's just the nicest thing ever,
No, it's true. Most do; ever since the days of Dio and Sabbath, metal has been the home turf for role playing nerds. Whether it's a kid playing Dungeons and Dragons in his parent's basement while Manowar belts out an anthem about swords or a twenty-year old sitting in his girlfriend's rec room, munching Cheetos and playing Final Fantasy X while the latest yaoi-bait J-rock Motley Cure ripoff shakes the walls, metal goes with RPGs like vikings and pillaging. Is it just me, or do the majority of people into RPG and fantasy tend to be on the rock/metal side?
You'll also find a smaller set of fans of "electronica", "classical/jazz", and "world music" (almost invariably Celtic), often overlapping with metal. You never really find many hardcore fans, and I dare you to uncover a single RPG player with an unironic appreciation for klezmer.
I listen to a broad range of music... composed of a rather esoteric mish-mash of groups from obscure genres.
Mostly, I listen to a lot of post-grunge mid-90's lo-fi alt rock (lots of hyphenated things there, eh!?), but I also have a soft spot for the deep end of industrial known as power noise, which basically equates to a lot of metal-banging-on-metal sounds spliced with static and the occasional digitally altered voice speaking in tongues over a band-saw grinding on a piece of steel sheeting. Good stuff. I can't explain why I like it, I just do... and it was one of the topics my fiance and I agreed on when we first met, oddly enough.
Less often, I'll listen to classical, opera, some metal genres, enka (Japanese music from the post-war period that's popular with the elderly nowadays), some electronica and offbeat things like Bjork, Sigur Ros, Rasputina and The Dresden Dolls.
