Making a perfect thief
Is it actually possible to make a perfect thief in the game?me and me friend have been trying to plan a build with use of dual wield, archery, light armor, pickpocket and lockpick but cant seem to make one unless we hit over level 50

Noticed the lack of "sneak" there.m0nkeydluffy wrote:Is it actually possible to make a perfect thief in the game?me and me friend have been trying to plan a build with use of dual wield, archery, light armor, pickpocket and lockpick but cant seem to make one unless we hit over level 50
Archery has the grace of providing a distraction: enemies tend to turn towards the sound of where an arrow strikes stone walls or a floor.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.
Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Plus, being able to shoot other adventurers in the knees, effectively ending their adventure-ing and forcing them to take up the dead-end career of hold guard.Dark Spark wrote:Archery has the grace of providing a distraction: enemies tend to turn towards the sound of where an arrow strikes stone walls or a floor.
Do you get to the cloud district very often? Oh, what am I saying, of course you don't.

Khajiit named S'ushi, level 32 now, sneak 91, pickpocket 27 (I think, I don't use it much), Lockpicking 48 (and 70+ lockpicks in inventory, opening everything what comes into my way), dual wielding two daggers, one handed skill 59, archery 58, light armor ~70, smithing 65, enchanting 44, alchemy is ~30.
I don't see any problem here
In fact I started to like S'ushi at level ~20, when he was good enough to sneak almost around everybody he encounters.
There's no real trouble making this kind of character in Skyrim

Re: Making a perfect thief
im trying to make one myself and im rather frustrated at the moment he cant sneak very well yet, i have found pickpocking gold or sneak shots with archery are a good way to build up your sneak rather quickly at an early stage, ill let you know more when i find out!

You'll also want to get the Throw Voice and Detect Life shouts. They are handy tools for any stealthy entrepreneur.

Re: Making a perfect thief
Cheers, yeah I didnt add sneak in as that would be a default anyways, anyways me and me mate at work wotked out a build, not bothered about enchantment as were aiming to get armor from thieves guild
Re: Making a perfect thief
My thief/assassin character uses sneak, lockpicking, a very little bit of pickpocketing, archery, destruction and illusion.
What I usually do is either to sneak up to him and x30 dagger damage him, or range them from a distance and get several x3 sneak attacks in a row.
What I found is that when shooting someone with a bow, they will go to the place you fired the arrow at. Any enemies that are close will also join the searching operation. They give up after a while. When you fire an arrow to somewhere else, it creates a distraction. When you kill someone, all other enemies will go look at the corpse.
I combine all of these to my advantage. For a thief only character, the guild master's clothes are generally best. If you're strong and don't need the extra pockets that the body provides, I suggest getting the ebony mail for sneak bonus.

Re: Making a perfect thief
Funny, that's very close to my character, although I consider myself to be more of a ninja-assassin than a mere thief.
All of those skills work very well in conjunction with one another; just remember that the lack of Chamo hurts stealth characters, and you have to be careful once you max your Sneak. At first it's all gravy, but the higher your level, the less and less meaningful that 100 Sneak rank is. When I was at Sneak Lvl 70 or so, nobody I met could spot me, even if I jumped on their head. Now that I'm at Sneak Lvl 100, I have to be much more careful to stay out of people's line of sight. Thanks, daft enemy scaling system!
Also, you might want to do some DB quests if you've got the time, since you get a pair of gloves that doubles your backstab damage right off the bat. Ever one-shotted a dragon with a knife?

Re: Making a perfect thief
Just made a Bosmer Thief/Assassin and I'm 2 hours in... He already owns at stealing and can one shot bandits with 1 sneak bow shot... Just remember that sneak/archery should be used together, and also Leather armor is great for early level thieves, as it's light, looks cool (IMO) and you can sprint ages in it... Yh!

EDIT: I play on Adept difficult (default) if that means anything...
