You have an entire class based on one part of maths? why? don't you just have a teacher or two teaching(funnily enough) all of it?

Maths are far too complicated to be tought as one subject. Many things are compltetely unrelated to others.

Yeah, it's can't really be put into a specific group of "maths" especially as you get into more advanced Algebra.

Why would algebra need it's own class? don't your teachers learn everything to do with a subject?

This isn't one of those classes which you do for a few months of a year then no longer have to is it? that would make more sense then there being an entire full blown yearly class on it.

Back in school I had two teachers for Maths, and they taught us everything we needed to know. Everything maths related was taught in chunks throughout each year.

Because algebra is not just "maths". It's algebra. It's a more specialized branch of maths. Right now in uni I've got maths and linear algebra. They're completely different and teaching them as one would just confuse you.

I was talking about school, not University. It makes sense in further education due to specialisation in your field of choice, what I was saying I find strange is that it's split up in school.

Maths was split up in school too, though. I had Algebra, Maths and Geometry (not the kind with shapes) in the lyceum (the greek equivalent of highschool).

You're just learning this Frosty? There are several people on this site that live in Europe. (okay, a lot more than several, but still...) Such as Dean, TSO, POMC, Veck, Tom, JV, Mars, etc.

@Mars:

Interesting... I didn't think the education systems would be all that different in other European Countries. I kinda wonder how the others are set up, see if Britain is the odd one out.

Dean, yes teachers in American schools learn their subjects, so a math teacher learns Algebra, Calculus, Trig, etc. But they are usually more competent in one area. Also, the class structure is such that we have a different curriculum, and learn math in parts. Starting in high school, you generally have in this order Algebra, Algebra 2, Trig, Statistics, Calculus, Calc 2, and so on. Most high schools I know of don't really go much past Calc 2, but you can switch it up a bit. For example, I graduated having taken Calc 2, but had friends that hadn't taken any Calc, but took Statistics. I didn't take Stat in high school. It's just the way the system works, and I think its good. You take math in an order that makes sense, but if you aren't skilled in Math, you aren't required to take more advanced math, but most places do require 4 years of it.
