What out-of-game music do you listen to while Skyrimming?
The Skyrim Recycling Tracks from Other Games? thread got me thinking about what non-game music people listen to while playing. I mean, RPG games like this are a highly personal activity, and I'm sure many people set an ambience to their game-playing environment to suit their mood, or to suit what's happening on the screen. As good as ES canned soundtracks are, some people can listen to the in-game music only so often before they long for something different.
My son uses his laptop as a background jukebox when playing video games, just loud enough to be heard but not overpowering the in-game sound effects and dialogue. I'm kinda amused by some of his musical choices when playing Skyrim.
For battles and mayhem, he likes Spaghetti Western music. Oddly, it really seems to work. When exploring mountainous terrain, he does a Voodoo Chile thing..."Well, I stand up next to a mountain, I chop it down with the edge of my hand." And walled cities always bring out All Along the Watchtower, and it works equally well in Dungeons: " "There must be some way out of here" said the joker to the thief..."
So, does anyone else tailor their music to their game, and what are your preferences? Perhaps we can create a Skyrim Jukebox.

Re: What out-of-game music do you listen to while Skyrimming
i dont do it often but sometimes ill let an album finish while firing up the game, and recently, i had side 2 of the new david lynch record on, one track in particular where theres this really long rant about life and clean teeth and god knows what else, as i went a roaming through the reach, the pace of it was just right, and my mood i suppose, anyway it was serendipitous, it was a moment, the two things became entwined, that track will always make me think of the reach, and the reach will always remind me of that track.
actually i might go and try some burzum while im at it

I loved the idea of listening to "I Gotta Feeling" (Black Eyed Peas) while playing Oblivion, seemed perfect, but the in-game music had it's own feel, except I would like WAY more variety in tracks.

No one's talked about Nordic death metal yet? For shame.
I like listening to melodic stuff. Insomnium fits in well, and gets pretty intense at good intervals, sometimes just in time for a big melee.

If they weren't nords, but instead dunmer or redguards, nobody would call them "racist".

Korpiklaani. Not death metal, but it's a Swedish metal band. Most if their songs are about drinking. Happy little happy little happy little boozer...
Re: What out-of-game music do you listen to while Skyrimming
Lyrical music in the background distracts me from dialogue so I don't listen to it.

Nah, I listen to the ingame music. Unless I played music off my Xbox while playing. Then I'd listen to it quietly behind Skyrim's sound effects, and voices.

I also listen to the ingame. It has been designed to fit the game, it works well, and it isn't boring. I enjoy it.

Re: What out-of-game music do you listen to while Skyrimming
the ingame music is great but i play the game so much it can really refresh things if its turned off for a while, first time i wandered through eastmarch i had no music on, it created a standout atmospheric experience, all that hissing from the geysers, there's plenty of abstract music in all those sound effects.

If anything, I'd plug bits and pieces of Apocalyptica into my Skyrim experience. Notably, "Cohkka", "Ruska", "Hope", and "Farewell".

Good input folks.
I just found my son listening to The Immigrant Song while battling a dragon. A metric crap-load of awesomeness. I suggested he should try this cover version instead, and he gave me the "That just ain't gonna happen anytime soon, dad, now please go away before you embarrass yourself again" look.

I listen to animals while I do just about everything, because a good head bang can add fun and danger to anything, whether it be a finishing move in skyrim or coming to a stoplight in the truck.
For clarification I meant the album animals, not the animals.

I usually listen to the in-game music, although occasionally, if it's a particularly nerve-wracking dungeon, the eerie ambiance can get to me after a time, and I usually have to blare something fairly cheery.

Man who posted this topic/Lee van Kleef/kleve(?), your son has a great musical taste.

Honestly, I just came back in here to post another one of my son's musical Skyrim choices, and this is what I find. Thanks, Utrechter. I'll let him know he's got a fan.
He was in some underground dungeon, listening to Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues. If you listen to the lyrics, so many of them apply to Skyrim in odd ways.

-nod- Actually, I weirdly end up listening to a lot of Bob Dylan whilst playing this game. Folk is pretty much a constant to me.Evil-i wrote:Honestly, I just came back in here to post another one of my son's musical Skyrim choices, and this is what I find. Thanks, Utrechter. Usually re-streaming Pete Tong or similar while playing. Though just as often I'll have a commentated Starcraft match playing in the background.
