It's like they took a whole bunch of the complaints, and a lot of common mods, of both Morrowind and Oblivion and stuck them into Skyrim.

Also, it's like Solstheim and multiplied it by 20. I love Solstheim.

I was crossing my fingers that they'd make the Skyrim province the next TES game, though I was 99% sure it was gonna be Summurset (sp?) Isle due to all the talk about uppity altmer in Oblivion.
If they weren't nords, but instead dunmer or redguards, nobody would call them "racist".

Very very very good. I;ve been waiting for this game for 5-ish years now. I am not at all disappointment.

The Good

-Overall graphics: The landscapes are both beautful and immense, draw distance is much improved.
-Sound: The score is spot on. Some of the songs actually give me goosebumps.
-Finishers: Adds another element of depth and flair to combat. Just learned how to lop people's heads off, and I love it.
-Smithing: Easily my favorite Crafting skill.
-Factions: Questlines are just as good as last time.
-Civil War: Very interesting, since neither side is completely evil or good.

The Bad

- Character Creation: I like having a set way to play my character, so the lack of a class system was a bit of a disappointment. This is a minor gripe, however.
- Lack of custom spells: None as far as I can tell.
- Questines: Seem a bit shorter than they should be.
- Radiant Quests: Some of them are bland and generic, but I can't complain too much about extra content.
- Textures: Some badly jagged lines at 720p

Overall I'd have to rate the game a 9.5/10. It's an excellent, albeit more focused adventure that is more than worth the price.

Spoiler:
Oh, but there's plenty of uppity Altmer-ness afoot in our lovely Skyrim. D:< Nothing but trouble, those elves!
It really seems that the dev team is listening and taking a hint from the modding community. It's so exciting to have things like this recognized and integrated. It links us in a way more personally with the development experience of the game. Now, if they could only model prettier hair! I'll just wear a helm...

I loved Solstheim, too. I'm really happy with the finished product.

As far as my review goes, I have a two part overview on my TES blog. I can't post outside links, so if anyone is interested, the url is on my profile. They're kind of lengthy and multimedia oriented otherwise I'd just repost it.

Oblivion was the first time I played an Elder Scrolls game so I am not a professional player. However, I got an Xbox in 2005 and I read a review in a magazine about this game so I decided to buy it. It was amazing. I became so involved in this game that my real life seemed less important. SInce then I have played and completed the entire game many times on the Xbox 360 and PC and I still love it. A few days ago I got a copy of Skyrim and everything seems so different. I know it will take me time to get into it and I am sure it will be a great game too but it hasn't captured me like those first few hours of playing Oblivion. I will try to like it and I really hope I can escape from reality once more. I am not a great computer game player. I only have 5 favourite all time computer games:

1. Oblivion
2. Call of Duty 2
3. Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge
4. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
5. Sam and Max Hit the Road

These games are truly the cream of a rather sour crop of computer games over the past 30 years.

Very good:
1. Bethesda looked at the wishes from the players of Oblivion and Morrowind (mods) and implemented them in skyrim:
  • Hunting, smithing, crafting, cooking, etc.. + animations
World feels more alive: also towns while being in there own cells. You still feel connected to the outer world.
World more alive: talk between npc's is not only about mudcrabs.
2. The Dragons are awesome
3. The battles between factions are a great addition
4. Environmental scenery is breathtaking

Good:
1. character creation, class system by choosing perks, etc.
2. Variety in fur and steel armors
3. dual wielding, powerstrikes, etc..
4. the way enchanting and alchemy works
5. you can still walk, be it only slow, when over burdened.
6. grimmer appearance of faces in general
7. music and sound is good
*. more things I at the moment can't come up with

Need work:
1. After doing a quest for someone and getting my reward, if I later speak with the same persons they don't seem to know me anymore.
2. No ranks visible in stats, nor memberships. Neither are they recognised by the NPC's.
3. The death of some important characters during the game seems to go unnoticed:
Spoiler:
*. After Ulric died, the war continues apparantely. And when asking f.i. the jarl of Whiterun how it can be stopped, he says that can only be when Ulfric is death and his head on a pike?????

*. After ending the Alik'r quest about the missing girl from Hammerfell, there are still some though looking Alik'r fellows at the gate. But when I speak to them I can't get into conversation.
4. music and sound is of low volume. I need to put everything to maximum (also in the OS) to get only a moderate soundvolume.

So I've been enlightened by Skyrim. I have finally played the game. It has shone on me and I have smiled back at it.
This is gonna be short review because I did not have the time to explore the entire land of Skyrim (although I'd very much like to).
I did not focus on the main quest so I won't focus on that in my review. Anyway here I go.
Spoiler:
As I escaped Helgen I chose to run to the nearest main city. So I opened the map and looked to the left and the right. Ok, I ran to Falkreath! Which was a really nice city, but small of size. I actually liked the small size a lot since it was an open city. On my way I found an abandoned house, which turned out to be a dungeon inhabited by bandits. After exploring it I ran once again. Looking at the beautiful surroundings (which were absolutely astonishing). I have almost arrived in Falkreath when I ran into a Dunmer who was on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Azura - a traveler! Nice! I thought while wondering if I would meet more travelers. I arrived at Falkreath and figured I would check out the tavern. The tavern was full of life and way better than the dull inns featured in Oblivion and I had still not noticed any similar voices, so I figured I had heard any. I picked up some quests. Unfortunately these quests were not very impressive I think that I completed six quests during my three hours of first play. The reason I did not find these quests impressive is the similarity of the quests. Only two of these quests were not "loot dungeon fetch" quests. And those "loot dungeon fetch quests" just seems so similar to Oblivion/Fallout 3 quests. Those two which were not fetch quests very great though! And of course the others were good too, but not impressive (but who am I to demand a game without fetch quests of course they will be in the game as well as future Elder Scrolls). During those fetch quest I got to see a lot of the local world those which amused me a lot. The new leveling system is nice and it's easy to choose which attribute you want to better when you level up. The perks I have so far have been very dull, but I'm still low level... So I did not expect the coolest perks.
Overall I find the game very very nice and I am really excited to get the game myself one day. I already like it better than Oblivion. Skyrim's soundtrack also rocks my world.
Fun fact: I put a basket on the head of the Riverwood trader guy and stole from him. It's possible, lol.

Ok so the following will be my review of skyrim, in a very simplistic 3 tier system.

Things I Like:
- i feel like the world feels like its quite huge.
- the diverse landscapes... super mountains, snowy tundras, epic planes etc.
- the characters, ten times better looking than oblivions.
- draugrs, big step up from silly skeletons.
- blackreach, HAVE you Been THERE??? its freaking beautiful
- this list is rather long so instead ill list off the following things
Things Im Neutral Towards (Need Improving):
- Arrows! i cant ever seem to find a steady supply of one type of arrow. maybe if smithing mixed in arrows some how..... =/
- Upgrading items in smithing, should add visual improvements not just the words (Legendary)
- Quest lines, felt a little short for the factions.
Spoiler:
8 quests to be the arch-mage? thats it?
- Shop Keepers, loved having only certain shops buying certain goods, but with such a tiny amount of money you have to go to almost every city just to sell your loot.
- Jumping, it feels like a dumb half child between oblivions superman jumps and fallout 3's five inch tall bunny hop.
- Magic, feels kinda over powered to me.
Things I Do NOT Like:
- The Thalmor, high elfs, altmer, w/e you wanna call them. Stuck up, annoying, rude little elfs. grrrrrr
- Spiders, from an enemy stand point they are good, but i hate spiders. and to have such a big one in high def in front of me i dont like :?
- Bugs, obviousley they wont be arround forever but they are annoying.
- Dragon BONE armor, scale looks great. but i just really dont feel like dragon bone armor feels like its...well.. made from dragon bones.
- No Underwater combat, how am i supposed to feel manly if i must flee from a slaughter fish because i cant draw my sword under water?
- The talos guy in whiterun. i want to slice his head off. he is so annoyingggggg.

Overall the game gets a 9.5 out of 10 for me. Hardly anything that makes the game unbearable

I've purchased Skyrim from STEAM about three days ago and already played it 12 hours (or so STEAM says). It works like a charm on my average-to-good-quality computer (which cost about $900 a few months ago) with medium-to-high graphics, no bugs so far (fingers crossed), and it looks and feels AMAZING. Better than Oblivion IMHO, and as fun as Morrowind.

The only "downside" I can find in this game is its interface, which is a bit more cumbersome for me than the Oblivion one. Aside from that, I do miss the ability to cut/blow off enemies' heads as in Fallout 3/NV... But critical kills are fun nonetheless.

Oh, and like Enigma1027, I'd prefer the smithing improvements to actually improve the items' looks in addition to their stats.

The only issues I've had with playing Skyrim are when it locked up twice. That is it! I'll give it a 10/10 all day long, provided Aela the Huntress starts acting like her old self again. I miss my werewolf.

I can not believe I am actually saying these words but... well...

Sigh... my childhood golden memory will never be the same again after saying this.

Skyrim is better than Zelda: Majoras Mask and Zelda: Ocarina of Time. :?

I did not want to accept this fact but it is just TOO good! the world is so responsive and well put together! I recall my greatest gaming experiences belonging to the Zelda games and when I first left the temple of time and climbed death mountain with the big red ring around it I never forgot that feeling and visual beauty. I enjoyed a similarly memorable scene completing the ice temple in Majoras Mask. two master class games with memorable scenes and atmosphere both story and world wise.

Skyrim though seems to have finally achieved what so many RPGs have set out to do, make a huge memorable world and add some grey political and moral choices as a driving story force, work some factions in and add in a responsive feel to ones choices.

Fallout seemed desperate to do this but I did not feel the world was really adaptive or well put together and the political choices (like picking the NCR or House etc) seemed kind of lame and actually fairly black and white. You have the good guys, the bad guys and the neutral Mr. House.

Final Fantasy has been at it for a good few years now and the games just seem to get duller and duller from it.

Skyrim achieves this perfectly, the game is interesting and has a very rich atmosphere, from where I am up to I see desperate rebels trying to free their homeland and an empire with a righteous goal and view of itself faltering and doing some rather deplorable things in the backwoods. I can not pick a side yet as I do not know who I agree with and THAT is great writing and story telling! to make you actually have to think "who is the bad guys in all of this" and then for the individual to come up with his own conclusion instead of the game forcing it on you (Final Fantasy)

The combat system feels fresh and exciting despite some people ripping into it for being "attack attack attack block attack attack attack) you could say that about ANY game outside of the Tekken style fighters and even then it is a similar process lol Call of Duty in my eyes is just *run around for 5 mins, 3 second of who can press shoot first, run around so I do not accept the attack on ES's combat system. Finishers really spice it up as well and making everybody more frail keeps fighting from dragging out badly and breaking immersion.

Ahh I think this is the great game of our time like LOTR were the great films of our time! I will never forget fighting bandits on the mountains with aurora lights shinning above us...

Sorry for the length of that.

The world is gorgeous and huge...... I hate the road system.. going north to get south doesnt make sense, even if it IS to get around a mountain... The ONLY inhabitants of Solitude i dont hate, are the children. everyone else is worth less than caring about and quite annoying and arrogant.
What do you MEAN the properties for sale but i cant buy it till ive done some stupid side show, thats probably a trick to get me to do something evil (Daedric, stealing, assassination, etc)??
Humor is awesome..
Talosian Monk ( Whiterun )needs to die AND he's a coward to boot so a slow death would be most fitting...
Alduin is a shrimp compared to the bones we run across to enter Sovngarde. I wanna fight THAT sucker.. err, uhh,, well,, maybe i'm glad he's dead already and i only have to deal with Alduin.
I HATE the Empire, I hate the Nords.. Think i'll go meditate at High Hrothgar with the greybeards..
Thalmer huh?? Umm Excuse me, who are you again?? (FUS-Ro-DAH...) Have a nice trip...

Yet one more chance for Bethesda to write an incredible story, flubbed up..
1. What do you mean the gem shards are Berenziah and NOT the amulet of kings..
2. Wait, I'm the same as Uriel and Tiber and I dont get the chance for the throne?? Excuse me.. I'm certainly not gonna follow a hitlerian nord or some little girl from cyrodil who can barely tie her own shoes...
3. Where is there the provision for me to change my mind during the war.. Join the nords and burn down whiterun or join the empire and fall under the aegis of the thalmer.. Wheres the creativity?? I want to be Emperor, Considering I'm dragonborn, I SHOULD be emperor, or at least have the opportunity to become it, instead of being given a frikkin elf sword and a shake of the hand only to crawl back into obscurity..

Wait!, theres a gateway to cyrodil, but i cant go through it yet?? Promises for the future or just more tease??

Oh yeah.. Have you guys been to Chicago lately, Or east Oakland, or really any city in the world?? You have nice shiny areas and run down hoods all combined in one place. I'm totally sick of grim filthy worlds tht need to be bulldozed and rebuilt.

I Love this game and I hate it. Theres no in between..

Like:
- Combat, all styles except two-handed weapons (too slow for my taste, but nice finishers).
- Chopping Wood, Smithing and other proffession-like activities.
- The environment.
- Music.
- The looks of beast-races.

Dislike:
- Purchasing the box, yet still requiring Steam.
- In the intro you, a soon to be allmighty hero, allow yourself to be executed putting up no fight whatsoever, nothing can be done about it.
- In several other quests choice is stripped from you, even if a trap is blatantly obvious you have to fall for it to move on with the quest.
Spoiler:
I especially dislike having to effectively sell my soul to Nocturnal to move on with the Thieves Guild questline
.
- Many NPCs that annoy my character or me, turn out to be essential and thus unkillable.

Love:
- Mountainclimbing, I love hopping to places you're not supposed to.
Spoiler:
like the throat of the world before you've mastered your first shout
.
- Cicero.

Hate:
- NPCs spamming messages.

Lastly, I would like a little more support for unarmed fighting.

Good-
Morrowind got blown up.
The backlore is quite interesting, especially for TES veterans.
The setting is brilliant, with lots of space to explore and varied terrain to keep you interested.
Gorgeous graphics, even on crappy PC settings.
Return of the leveled Enchanting skill.
Smithing is a great replacement for Repair; it feels more heroic and it's lots more fun.
Dual wielding is a welcome advance.
Spells look really cool now and casting "feels" much better.
Voice acting and character models are great; far better than in previous TES games.
Monster scaling is better than in Oblivion.
Decapitations are nice, if infrequent.
Player owned weapon racks and bookshelves behave brilliantly.
Flying monsters are a cool addition, and not bringing back Cliff Racers is a commendable choice.
Harvesting alchemical ingredients is better, thanks to the various visual effects. The presence of catchable fish and insects is a masterful touch.
Perk system is interesting and could, in theory, help improve character specialization while not locking players into one or two build choices.
Getting rid of the Pie Game was a good idea.
Marriage is a great addition, in theory.
More followers and greater control over them is another good idea, in theory.
Nords everywhere, few if any Bosmer.
Ability to pick factions and conquer cities.

Bad-
STEAM.
STEAM.
And also, Steam.
PC UI is inexcusable.
The main quest is disappointing; your character develops into an ungodly badass much too quickly, and the plot is cliche.
Fewer biomes than Cyrodiil, hope you like snow.
No spellmaking. This issue HAS to be fixed, either with DLC or mods.
Once you strip away the novelty of having an Enchanting skill, the Enchanting system really isn't that much better than the one found in Oblivion. In fact, in many ways it's worse- you've got fewer spell-type choices and the single-effect-only restriction gives you less freedom to play around with your stuff.
Smithing interface is needlessly cumbersome, especially when crafting raw materials in bulk.
No Athletics and no Acrobatics; Acrobatics is a particularly serious loss, given the terrain in Skyrim.
Fewer spell effects. Still missing Leap (which would be even handier now that we've lost Acrobatics training), and the two best Oblivion spell effects, Feather and Chamo.
Dual wielding is buggy, awkward, and poorly implemented. Once you get past the initial thrill, there's really not much advantage to the system, at least not for warriors or spellswords. The only people who benefit fully are pure mages.
The horses are worse; slower, dumber, and totally lacking variation. Horses can scale nearly vertical cliffs yet can die from a three foot fall. Separating horse color from performance was a good idea, as it does not penalize players for making aesthetic choices. Doing this by making all horses crap was not.
Monster scaling is way off at points.
Obnoxious immortal children < no children at all.
Combat system is dated; it should have at least improved on Fallout, but if anything it took a step back.
Lack of blood and gore; again, something they should have learned from Fallout, but didn't.
Fewer equippable item slots, again, a problem from Oblivion that should have been fixed, not made worse.
Can't name your own potions.
Too few perk points discourages experimentation, especially with non-combat skills.
Pickpocket skill is pointless and stupid; could easily be merged with Lockpicking or left as a function of Sneak.
Disposition is too opaque and difficult to modify; getting rid of the Pie Game should have helped streamline the AI, but without a good replacement, all they've done is render the disposition system useless.
AI behavior is still crap; bandits still forget about the stealth-murder of one of their friends a minute later, villagers ignore dragon corpses after a short gawking session, and so on.
Marriage is buggy and poorly implemented; the Sims this is not. Hell, Fable this is not.
Followers are dull and most have no personality. I don't expect them to be fleshed out to Dragon Age levels, but despite the sheer numbers of them, they're even less interesting than the ones found in Oblivion.
Only two major factions to choose from. Even Gothic gave you three!
No werebears.
Needs an introductory cinematic to explain critical lore, like the Stormcloak Rebellion.
Dragons are much too weak and far too numerous. It diminishes their impact and appeal.
Where the hell is our CK?

Obviously, it's one of the best games I've played in recent years, or ever, in fact. But I consider it to be in a paid beta phase right now, so I won't rate the game until the PC modding community finishes it.

I've stated my opinions in various threads but now I'll make a list of what I adore and what I loathe. Yaaaaaay...
*crickets*

I adore <333 :
-The tons of books there are in the game. More than ever!
-The new lore. It's nice. I like elves being prominent.
-Graphics, character models, art design, it all looks great.
-MUCH better and varied voice acting. Though I don't like all the choices. Will get to that later.
-Dungeons feel unique, even though some of them aren't.
-New skill system.
-Crafting. It's not overpowered if you don't abuse it by making thousands of iron daggers or enchanting every item you pick up.
-MAGIC <3!
-General improvement of combat.
-Better AI than Oblivion. Disregarding followers being retarded, the towns do feel alive.
-Random encounters.
-Dragons are nifty.
-Cooking and other pointless activities.
-Quests are much, much better.
-Cities, though still small feel much more city-like.
-Spell effectiveness is gone. Phew.

The "meh" bits:
-Dual wielding. Doesn't work too well with weapons.
-Shouts aren't too useful. I often forget that I have them.
-There aren't as many alchemy ingredients, or so I feel.
-I didn't really like most of the customization options for Khajiit (Khajiit and Dunmer are the only races I've played so far).
-The UI isn't great, but it's not as terrible as people seem to feel.
-Lack of the TDT command. I had to download fraps because they took it out. *shakes fist*

Loathe! :
-Lack of companion depth. All they do is comment on the scenery.
-Villages are a bit too small. I mean, Ivarstead consists of two cabins, Winterhold is basically only the College.
-Dialogue options. I'm a damn wizard! I know what an elder scroll is! I understand Nirn's metaphysics! I know who the Dwemer are! I AM NOT AN IDIOT! ARGH! Everyone seems to think that I'm some sort of brawn over brains guy.
-Lack of unlock spell. Why? There was no reason whatsoever.
-Lack of water walking spell. Why?! There was no reason whatsoever either!
-Dunmer voices. The trailers lied again! But even if they could not be made raspy...why the bloody hell did it have to be a cockney accent?

Really? That's usually my style of choice on most of my characters. I find it useful.

It might have been due to my attempt to run the game on ultra. I thought it ran well, but it turns out my FPS dropped as low as 15 during combat, making it sort of awkward. So, I'll post again as soon as I thorougly play with a dual wielding character.

first of all, i love the game,
love the character models, love the interface, love the terrain, the dungeons, the skills and perks, and for all the repetition of dialogue none of it really grates so really well done there...
i havent read any spoilers at all, and ive only visited 4 cities so far (im at lvl 40), so ive still a lot to experience im sure

but allow me to get my initial gripes out of the way,
1. horses STILL aren't worth it. bandits stupidly still attack them, they still stupidly run off and/or charge in to fight, and getting off them still takes far too long in combat situations. these things should have been fixed, no question. and besides all that, companions can't use them.
2. no hardcore mode, and the food element being nonsensical, as it stands you gobble food if you run out of potions, eating in the middle of a fight is... well logic is a factor in almost all other elements of the game design, so why not here? i like that being well rested makes a difference to leveling, don't see why they couldnt do the same with food, or even better, have it effect your stamina bar, being overtired takes a temporary chunk off the total amount, being starved takes another chunk.
3. purchasing houses can be too frustrating and obscured, the relevant npcs should have more information about how to proceed, there's no reason why they wouldn't really. i hate having to look things up online and i long for the day when games actually contain the info you need to play them. as it stands it's the only thing that's taken me out of my rp and turned me into a metagamer, which is a damn shame.

minor gripes - not enough body variations, the new glass stuff looks wack, still cant jump from a slope, wish they used the threat meter they have for bandits/giants on more animals, shields should go on backs when weapon is sheathed (ffs).

anyway, had to get that off my chest,
oh and its easily the coolest looking character ive ever been able to design, the argonian models are the bomb, he's a keeper for sure,
and even still, can't wait to reroll and move on to master difficulty/dead is dead/no magic/all that

Being a werewolf SUCKS.

I want to love lycanthropy. I really do. However:

No natural healing, like everybody else. Why? Why can't I hide in a corner and let my health bar slowly raise during an emergency? Why can't I rely on my health bar slowly raising in between fights like everybody else?

Can't feed on animals. Why? I'm sure some might bend over backwards saying that your bloodlust is for people or something stupid like that. Well then why not making feeding off animals heal you less or something? Turn rabbits into minor health potions?

Because of the aforementioned two, your only way to heal yourself, is to go attack somebody, who is hurting you. So you need to heal, so you can only get healed, from a source that hurts you. This makes my brain hurt how nobody playtested this to see the problems. But considering the infamous 1.2, we all know how much they value beta testing.

Oh, and why do you only heal like 25-50 hit points per kill? That's how much it feels like it heals. Not. Enough.

Seriously, just like in Bloodmoon, being a werewolf is weaker than just being human. What's the point, then? What's the point of being a big badass creature if it's such a wuss compared to normal human beings?

Guess I'll just chalk this up to yet another thing I love (werewolves) and sigh as someone else making it suck. Such an insult to take something cool and punish you for it. Get enough of that in real life, y'know?

Here's hoping for a mod that lets you heal like 150 hit points per kill, and gives you massive health regen as you'd expect from being a supernatural monster, and lets you feed on animals.

Oh two more things: I can't tell you how often I've died trying to execute a charge attack and the freaking thing WILL NOT RESPOND, I'm slamming my attack button and it won't attack! GAH! Unresponsive controls are BAD, hm'kay?

The next: the fear roar thing would be more useful, if it didn't have the problem I mentioned here -- mentally replace 'paralyze' with 'fear'.
If they weren't nords, but instead dunmer or redguards, nobody would call them "racist".
