Landscape size and scale of Skyrim and comparison to others

Post by Oqlanth »

I remembered when Oblivion released there are discussion about size and scales of Elder scroll games. As I remembered it is like these;

*Oblivion got larger landspace size than Morrowind but Morrowind's scale is larger
*Well Daggerfall got landspace larger than U.K. but most of them are random generated.

The thing i am most curious is landspace scales and comparisons. Skyrim got smaller size than Cyrondil but it seems game have similar landscape...

Does anybody know correct landscape size and scales of Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim?...

Good gaming :D

Morrowind has the largest scale of the last three games, as it takes place in Vvardenfell, which is only a fraction of the province Morrowind, and, in terms of lore, Vvardenfell seems to be about half the size of Skyrim.

Skyrim has the second largest, with the actual "landscape" being about equal to that of Oblivion's, even though Cyrodiil is significantly larger.

Oblivion has the smallest, as Cyrodiil is massive and the landscape had to be shrunk considerably in order to get the entire province to fit.

I missed it here.

You would think with Cyrodiil being shrunk down to fit a large province into a small area, it would be full of places to see and things to do, instead of being the opposite!

I agree, Oblivion felt almost lazy in terms of the world.

Cyrodiil was pretty much 9 or so "towns" (and I say town because they were not exactly huge like the Imperial City) wrapped around the IC. between these towns we just had big empty fields with dungeons possessing poor loot and the odd inn. The only thing I enjoyed in Oblivion was the shrines to find.

Skyrim is extremely well put together, climbing the mountains on an aurora night is particularly stunning and memorable. The forts and bandit mines are extremely fun to explore as well and yet very different. Taking a fort feels like it should (a great military feat) exploring a dank old mine is jumpy as hell at times. the crypts are also very creepy and edgy and add in the fact we have small towns all over, big hold cities random encounter spots, camps etc etc and most hold great loot then Skyrim just feels like a rich rewarding and responsive world with no equal to detail were as in Oblivion the world felt like they forced it to be huge with nothing to fill it with and make you enjoy exploring it.

End rant.

I quite like the fact that Cyrodiil was sparsely populated. I used to walk the Scottish countryside & Cyrodiil was very reminiscent of it. I loved walking around with little to do except for the occasional random encounter. However I completely agree Skyrim is better in pretty much every I can think of.

I heard scale of Morrowind is 1/7 and Oblivion is 1/10 but i don't know full numbers and parameters.

I re-install Morrowind and try to check size and it's scale seems very close to Skyrim. Horse, sprinting (and horse springting) and also Fast Travel functions of Skyrim makes confusion but it seems to be very larger than Morrowind.

May be we can learn parametres from console or ESCS... Do you know any way to learn?

Regardless of the size of any gameworld, there comes a time when it begins to feel cramped. I remember how jaw-droppingly huge the world felt when I first played Oblivion. A few years later, and it's like "Who needs fast travel? I can cross the map, in sneak-mode, in 4 real-life minutes. I can get there in one minute if I run."
"Keep your arrows in their archer" *quiver*
