Why do YOU think the Falmer went blind?

Post by dtmwerks »

M'aiq knows why Falmer are blind. It has nothing to do with the Dwemer disappearing. Really.

Refers to lore added in Skyrim which suggests that Falmer living in the lands beneath Skyrim were poisoned and enslaved by the Dwemer, leading the crippled Falmer to rebel and fight the Dwemer until the latter's disappearance.
So.....is anyone else's mind in the gutter about why the Falmer went blind? The way he says it, and adds "really", just makes me think of a certain, childhood myth, regarding, well, you know...

While our minds are in the gutter, there's a small fetch quest in Markarth that takes about 30 seconds.
Spoiler:
Go to the alchemy shop there and deliver the a certain potion that certain elderly males may need

Mushrooms are one hell of a drug.

Nah but really, the Dwemer force-fed them some kind of fungus when they sought refuge somewhere...like, ages ago, which turned them all blind. I'm not good at lore but it says so in an in-game book so it can't get more canon than that.

But why the Dwemer disappeared...If they're trying to tease us like that, perhaps they just paid for their horrific crimes or what not?
I used to make polls, but then I took an arrow in the knee.

The fungus they ate was toxic. Perhaps it poisoned their visual cortex as much as their bodies?

If you look at a dead falmer body they aren't just blind, they have no eyes. Most creatures that have lived in caves for thousands of years also have this feature. Simply because they don't need them and their other senses become enhanced because of this.

I'm sure one of the loading screens in Skyrim says: "After living for years underground, the darkness rendered the Falmer blind" (or something along those lines)

There's conflicting information, just like with anything else TES. The devs do this on purpose. Makes it more like a living universe with different points of view.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

I thought the Dwemer disappearance was obvious? Wasn't it explained in Morrowind to be something to do with the heart of Lorkan?

Word of God or the closest thing to it states they collectively became the brass skin of Numidium, and that it was not a mistake to do so but their ideological goal.

Dwemer women must have been very ugly.

The poor Snow Elves never stood a chance.

I can see two options for Dwemer women, which is that they looked exactly like Dwemer men, beards and all or that they were the most gorgeous women who ever lived. I'm having a hard time deciding which would be more awesome.

They are blind because they saw a Khajiit licking his butt. If that doesn't blind you.. Well..

If I saw a khajiit licking her butt, that'd be my future wife right there.

In the book called "The Falmer: A Study", the writer says that the Dwemer did indeed force the Falmer to eat the toxic fungi which made them go blind. I'm inclined to believe this.
However, it was what was said at the end that made me wonder. It tells of the surface raids that the Falmer do and then says 'Are the snow elves of ages past ready to reclaim their forgotten glory? Are they ready to surge to the surface, and make war upon the light dwellers?'
Could this be a reference to future DLC or expansions?
Or could this be a reference to future Lore, where the Falmer rise up and war with the Nords?

My own comment is that, the mer in general are highly magical, and seem capable of almost forced evolution based on culture and circumstances. If I had to make an unsupported guess, I would figure that after whatever destroyed Falmer culture and society and forced them underground, they basically magically evolved themselves to their new circumstances ( not necessarily consciously ).

Well it's adapting, slightly different from evolution.
Spoiler:
According to a few books I found in Skyrim supported by the wiki the Ice elves attacked the original Nords and got beat badly so they went to the Dwemer seeking refuge. There they were mistrusted and forced to eat a mushroom that not only rendered them blind but genetically altered them to remain blind. There their now useless eyes slowly became nothing but a weakness and evolved to have the skin over their eyes the way they are now

Close correct answer is its evolution baby. Anyway they have evolved over time because a lifeform that lives in total darkness doesn't need to see.

Combination of dwemer shrooms and good ol evolution, I believe the "toxic" mushrooms sped up the adaptation process of the falmer causing them to lose their eyesight. That is why their offspring possess the trait, a toxin wouldn't be genetic, atleast not for thousands of years

My personal opinion is that the Dwemer fed the original Falmer and all their offspring the mushroom, essentially trapping them underground. Gradually their hearing and smell grew more acute, and they lost their eyes at the same time. An experiment was done about a decade ago that indicated that fish who lived in complete darkness went blind after as few as three generations.

Since the Falmer were living underground in the darkness of course they would go blind.
