Umbriel

Post by MathiasFlynnias »

Well, I searched the forum and found nothing, but do you not find it strange that there is almost NOTHING mentioned about Umbriel in game?

For those that do not know, Umbriel is essentially a floating city that killed everyone in it's path and rose them back from the dead and destroyed most of Black marsh, parts of Morrowind and almost destroyed the Empire and the Imperial City (Written in Greg Keyes Novels).

But despite all of that, there is little or no mention of it ANYWHERE. Correct me if I am wrong, but the only mention of it anywhere seems to be Ysolda when she talks of the 'Sleeping tree sap' and that it could be from a 'sapling from a floating city'.

If there is any other mention, like books and the like, please post. Otherwise, I have no idea why such a huge event would go... virtually unnoticed.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. Considering that the oblivion crisis was 200 years ago also (and I believe that Umbriel was a considerable amount of time after that so more like 150 +/- years ago) and there are still people talking about Queen Potema over 500 years ago...

It's just it was such a HUGE event and I haven't even found a single book on the matter.

I would suspect they didn't want to make people feel left out for not reading the novels. It is kind of odd that it doesn't even merit some background mentions, like an in-game book or something. Maybe they didn't like the books as much as they thought they would and have decided they're not canon?

But Vvardenfell has been destroyed... that's from the books. They can't just take some parts of the book and leave others out.

Yet, people have still fled from the Dunmer/Argonian war and the destruction of morrowind... :? Strange.

Spoiler:
The Infernal City
There are Dunmer refugees in Windhelm who traveled from Morrowind after Red Mountain erupted. If you speak to some of the refugees and ask them why they are in Windhelm despite the discrimination they face, they will tell you that when the Red Mountain erupted, they began traveling west and the first city they came to was Windhelm. They will often say they wish they had kept walking.
Also, just before the Volcano erupted, those following Azura had a premonition from her of what was about to happen, giving them time to flee. It was the refugees who built the Shrine of Azura on one of Skyrim's mountains.

But there is still no reference to Umbriel itself, just the result of the Red Year.

Spoiler:
Multiple things introduced in the novels appear.

We have an emperor named Titus Mede II. References to Morrowind being ruined are in the game, as well as Umbra the sword being no more, replaced with a cursed axe.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

We have to keep in mind the whole epic affair lasted less than a week and the Synod and College of Whispers took credit for stopping it. The real story has been lost to history, and Attrebus let it happen for stability.

Also of note is how the Chancellor at the time was working with the Thalmor, and intended to use Umbriel to do something to White Gold Tower. This was probably one of their failed attempts to weaken Talos/Shor/Shezzar/Lorkhan/Ysmir.
